Andy95W Posted March 8, 2015 Report Posted March 8, 2015 I doubt it. US free speech allow us to offend. I don't think you can burn a Qur'an in Sweden. There is a book about Sweden which mentions a guy imprisoned for his college lecture content which offended minoritites. Yes, but similar things do happen here in the United States- A Jehovah’s Witness went to prison for calling a police officer a “God damned racketeer”, a teenager was jailed for burning a cross, and Hustler paid damages to a preacher over a parody labelled as such in the magazine. (Cut and paste from another website) "Socialism is commonly regarded as an economic system that seeks to achieve equality among members of society. Communism, on the other hand, is both an economic system that seeks equality among members of society and a political ideology that advocates a classless and stateless society and rejects religion. It is regarded as a more extreme form of socialism." (cut and paste from another website) So the economic system is not to blame, but rather the extreme political correctness of the societies. "The key difference in the freedom of speech or expression between the United States and Sweden (as well as many other European countries) is that in the US, regulation of the freedom of speech is very lax when compared to continental European legal systems. While the freedom of speech is not absolute in the United States’ legal system, it is much closer to being almost completely unrestricted than in Europe. European legal systems generally have much tighter laws regarding “incitement to hatred” and “hate speech,” to the extent that in recent years they have been used to silence dissenting opinions all across Europe." (Cut and paste from another website) Again, not the economic system (socialism) but an extreme desire to not offend any of their citizens, whether warranted or not. Perhaps Sweden was a bad example. How about Great Britain, which is much more socialist than the US but people regularly criticize the government and royal family just because they can and they enjoy it. Quote
ryoder Posted March 8, 2015 Author Report Posted March 8, 2015 Nationalizing industries like Venezuela did is a definite sign of socialism. The first highways in the us were toll roads for many years. The problem with socialism is that at some point you run out of other people's money. Quote

Freedom of commerce and travel provided by a huge government project. Quote

ryoder Posted March 9, 2015 Author Report Posted March 9, 2015 The thing about Americans is that we rejected socialism and monarchy in favor of reduced government benefits, lower taxes, and more individual liberty. It's nice to have a nation where the individual is still king. I know socialist ideas have been implemented in the us but I'd like to roll most of them back starting with universal healthcare. It's my opinion that those are best left for socialist countries and not this country where the social safety net is much thinner but liberty is much greater. Quote
