I am looking for a spinner backplate for an M20E with a Hartzell propeller and 201 spinner.  Ours cracked badly and the repair shop said this is an unusual combination and has been unable to find one.  Does anyone have one they would like to sell or know where we can get one?  I attached pictures of our damaged one showing measurements.  Thanks!

I have a #835-20 spinner and back plate.  It went to my Hartzell HC-2yk-1 AD hub.  My understanding is that it can be modified to fit a non AD hub.  Let me know if it can help.

Thank you kerry, I e-mailed your reply to the repair shop.  I think they understand the matching of these parts better than I do yet.  I'll let you know if we're interested.

This is caused by the interference fit of the prop and the spinner not being "snug". The dog ears that also hold the spinner on need to be secured to the spinner first, then the one screw that holds them on to the back plate tightened. How do I know? Well I had one that looked just like that a number of years ago. I found the ears at Wilmar and the backplate at Maxwell, who ordered it from Mooney. The ears were about $350 ea then and the backplate was about $650.

If you don't have the spinner and the hub's nose properly fitted, it will happen again, so make sure your A$P understands how to properly install it.

I experienced the same issue. I eventually found a bulkhead after looking for months, purchasing repaired ones that later failed and several instances of removing and reinstalling the prop.

In hindsight, I would have been better off and it would have been significantly cheaper to have just spent $2500 for the replacement spinner assembly from Hartzell. The new assembly bolts to the hub itself and not the flywheel.

Thanks for the info so far. I'll check with my partners if we're interested in the $2500 Hartzell option, but I'm hoping to spend a lot less than that. Here are a few extra details from the repair shop:

-Aero Resources STC# SA8659SW, Installation of Mooney M20J 2-blade spinner.

-The parts list that came with the STC paperwork lists part number 680031-027 for a Hartzell prop. This is the part number I’ve been looking for. (Mooney says they can make one for around $3,500 and 165 days.)

-Hartzell propeller model HC-C2YK-1BF

-A Service bulletin from Mooney that is attached to the STC paperwork, Propeller Spinner Bulkhead Inspection and Modification, lists the part number as 680031-3 and that number agrees with my M20J parts manual. (Maybe this part number replaces the -27 number?)

-Part number 680031-017 is the part number for a McCauley installation (Just FYI if you see it come up.) [so this part is not what we need]

Did you have a front bulkhead on the spinner?

All this old metal on these spinner installs appears to be at its life limit. Even the smaller spinners are cracking now days. This is after dynamic balancing, crank balancing etc. I think the metal has had it! About time for some Carbon parts to be made!

It's ridiculous that things cost so much. My first replacement was one that had been repaired. It started to crack within 10 hours and a stop-drill held it until I found a replacement months later. Don't get one that's been repaired. On any parts such as this, while they feel rigid in our hands, they are constantly flexing. The engine flywheel sometimes moves differently from the propellor hub and cracks like to form where stress risers are present (think of a candybar wrapper where it has the jagged edge where you tear the plastic. If that jagged edge wasn't there, it would be very difficult to tear; stress risers are bad news in stressed components).

I found my replacement through another Mooneyspace member who had one left over after he did a prop upgrade. It's just that this part is not all that common since most of the M20J's came with McCauley propellors, except for a few early ones that shipped with Hartzell Q-Tip props.

The part is supposedly made by Globe and rumor has it that Globe has them sitting on the shelf; now that Mooney is back in business, it might be worth seeing if they can pursue that option. I know that I spent some time on the phone with Mooney during my search and they found an assembly for the McCauley prop with no part number. They sent me a picture for me to identify if it was the right part and still wanted $2000+ for that assembly.

That Cheek plate will run you 300-400$ as well. *if* you can find the bulkhead, you may realistically be looking at over $1000 for the used parts and they may still be prone to failure.

Another option I considered was replacing the prop with a Top Prop at around $9000 -- something that I might consider if the prop needed a full overhaul and that bulkhead since your prop probably has some value to somebody.

Bottom line is that this issue really, really sucked for me. After having been through this ordeal, if my current bulkhead cracks, I will purchase a new spinner from Hartzell.

I'm not sure what a front bulkhead is.  Our spinner has a ring inside, is that what you mean?  I attached pictures of it.

Yes, ring inside is the front bulkhead. It is a loose fit on the front of the prop and you have to wrap the prop with the correct tape to make this a snug fit. Mooney has a service bulletin that shows how to do this. You can find it on their web site.

Yes, that's it. Just make sure that ring is tight to the hub with no wobble or movement. Wrap the hub even with Teflon tape if you need too.

That front bulkhead for the older longer dome spinner is what I'm currently looking for. Dan at lasar said good luck. Said he found one about ten years ago, and it was really hard to find then.

I've also found it easier for remove the front bulkhead and then get a good fit with the tape and front bulkhead. Once you get a snug fit then reinstall the bulkhead in the spinner.

Hi Jerry, how did you get on with the hunt for your backplate? I have the same prop/spinner and need to replace the fwd and aft bulkheads/backplate along with the dog-ears....I've been around the houses as well and got then same response from Dan at Lasar! I was quoted $4400 and 150 days just for the spinner dome.....or $385 to repair at Aero Specialist Engineering Inc....but I still need the bulkheads so would be keen to know if you ran across a source!

We finally got this problem fixed this week. We got an undamaged spinner and backplate that had to be modified to fit our plane. I didn't really like the idea of modifying a backplate but the company that did the modification provided paperwork certifying the modified part. I e-mailed the shop to see if they would provide contact info for the companies involved. I'll post again when I get a reply.

Thank you to everyone that posted on this thread! I discussed the fit of the front bulkhead and hub with the shop to be sure they install it correctly, and we had the prop dynamically balanced to hopefully delay or reduce the chance of a recurrence.

We decided to keep our original spinner as a backup, which was repaired before I started this thread. If someone wants it bad enough we may be willing to sell it, I'd have to talk to the other owners. The spinner had a small crack which was repaired. The backplate was a total loss as it was not able to be repaired.

Awqward, A few people sent me private messages who had these parts, but we didn't end up purchasing them because of the difficulty of identifying the correct part. I plan to reply letting them know we got it fixed and could suggest they check with you if you like.
