DrBill Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 In tracing an intake leak we found a couple that were large (standby vac tap was the worst) but on final check we traced a leak to the SNIFFLE valve. In it's place is a right angle brass elbow with a 5 in piece of Aluminum tube to a rubber hose to the fitting on the bottom of the cowl.. No orifice or restriction. About a 1/8 in hole all the way. I've read in some other forums that many Mooneys are like this and the mixture is adjusted to compensate. We're going to put it all back the way it was and if we can get good idle adjustment we'll let it go but just for grins.... WHAT DO YOU HAVE ? Bill Quote
KSMooniac Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Everyone should have a working sniffle valve. Quote
MB65E Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 I have one installed but it dosent have the right angle on it. I'd like to grab one that a fitting with a line can attach too and drain properly to the cowl exit. Lycon manufactures their own with a 1/8 in pipe thread/3/8 male an fitting with the check ball I believe. There is also an early SB from mooney that lists the parts. -Matt Quote
Guest Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Bill, The sniffle valve/ drain fitting on your engine should be an aluminum elbow with a 1/8 NPT pipe thread on one end and an flaired -4 thread on the other. Mooney modified the flaired end and installed a small nylon ball which is retained by a small roll pin in the threads. When the engine is running, intake vacuum suck the ball up closing the hole, when not running gravity pulls the ball down allowing fuel to drain through the over board line. Clarence Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 What Clarence said. Maybe someone didn't know what it was and changed out the elbow. Just unscrew the AN fitting and look in to see if you can see the ball. If not then make or buy a new one. Quote
carusoam Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 For proper sniffle valve operation... http://mooneyspace.com/topic/12850-need-help-diagnosing-intermittent-drip/?hl=sniffle#entry163660 I think José explained it for me... Ball valve that closes when the engine runs (vac), opens when the engine stops. For more... Put the word 'sniffle' in the search box, click the forums button. There are a few threads that may make sense... I have heard it described the part is made by simple machining of ordinary plumbing. It is possible to confuse and replace with the incorrect part. Like M20Doc described... The part that MooneyMite is showing looks better than the description that I had heard... Best regards, -a- Quote
DrBill Posted September 11, 2014 Author Report Posted September 11, 2014 Looks like I'l make mine work.. Any ideas where I can find a nylon ball about 3/16 dia ? BILL Quote

DrBill Posted September 12, 2014 Author Report Posted September 12, 2014 Took plane for post annual flight today and I now have to learn how to land it again since the idle is now under 600 (was 900). All things are working and good. Will do some more practice next week. BILL 1 Quote

N601RX Posted September 21, 2014 Report Posted September 21, 2014 If you think their website is good, you should go inside the facility. Their order processing and handling is amazing. The Atlanta distribution center is huge. Last time I was there picking up something I think I remember something like 25 or so UPS semi's backed up to their loading docks. Quote
