I'm working with a fresh O360-A1D overhaul. I had the 12 year old Hartzell Scimitar resealed and painted at the same time. It makes it to about 2640 static rpm, which is normal I think. However RPM at takeoff / climb isn't any faster than that. JPI digital tach. The PCU5000 governor was carefully installed with the cable pushing to the full stop of the arm on the governor. Is this a governor adjustment or a prop fine pitch stop adjustment to get to 2700? If the former, how is it done? I've been searching for PCU5000 manuals online but have come up blank. Can someone supply one? BTW, behavior was pretty similar before overall and prop reseal....engine overall was a good albeit costly experience in general - will post a full pirep later.

In the middle of a major overhaul, my current governor contaminated and does not pass test on a stand, looking for a reasonably priced replacement (H-1 or PCU5000) in a verified condition (not contaminated, not after prop strike)

Interesting discussion for me as I just reclocked my PCU5000 per the installation guide. I was maxing at 2640rpm in climb as measured by an optical tach. After reclocking (that's a whole "nother" thread) We are now at a constant 2700 but it does push to 2730 for a split second if you advance too aggressively. So it seems that the governor is what is holding it at 2700 rather than the pitch stop. I am sure that the pitch stop is close. I am glad I got it right the first time. The Lycoming governor location combined with the proximity of the accessory to the firewall is terrible in terms of accessibility.

Looking for a governor (H-1, PCU5000)
lithium366 replied to lithium366's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I had a Hartzell H-1. I thought ATH-1 will use the same bracket while McCauley will require another bracket from Lazar. This is why I am looking for either same H-1 as I had or ATH-1 PCU5000. Am I missing something? -
Looking for a governor (H-1, PCU5000)

Correct. That is the PCU5000 part number I am looking to buy. Decided to see if someone is selling before I buy new or overhauled from a governor shop -
I would probably spend the extra 1k on the PCU5000.
-
For the PCU5000 that might be the preferred method. The manual should say. It is something that is expected to be done sometimes.
-
I have a PCU5000. I’ll checkout the manual. Sure seems like it would be easier to just re-index the arm over one tooth.

Keep in mind, the PCU5000 (ATH-1) is only approved if you are replacing a Hartzell governor on your Mooney. The difference is the control arm clocking is of the opposite rotation from the Woodward/McCauley governors. If the prop cable penetrates the firewall on the right side, then you are good to go with the ATH-1. If your prop cable is on the left side, then the ATH-1 is not what you want. I think the Hartzell governors were only used in the ‘65-‘68 production years(?)… check the IBP to verify. This prop cable routing/support bracket works with the ATH-1 (Index 14). This prop cable routing support/bracket does not work with the ATH-1 (Index 26).

What kind of Governor? I have a similar issue sans the continuing degradation. It started after a PCU5000 installation. In my case the cable and linkage have moved as far as they can I need to.reclock the arm that connects governor.

Just get the PCU5000 and don't worry about it again. I replaced my Edo Aire when I bought the plane. It was 50 years old. When I took my prop to the prop shop, they said the overhaul cost is almost always more expensive than the new governor.

Most people are updating to the PCU5000 if it lists their plane for eligibility… If you have many thousands of hours on the govenor… it may be ready for an OH… By the time you pull, inspect, and OH… you may be best to just a get a new PCU… The PCUs are really low cost compared to an OH of the older system… All Stuff I read around here… Best regards, -a-

Looks like the PCU5000 is a no go for the M20J… Sorry for the distraction… Best regards, -a-

Check if the PCU5000 is approved for the J model. Not sure it is.

Thanks … We will order the PCU5000 Good info[emoji41] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Are we on a CB budget for gov portion of the project? What gov do you have? How many years/hours on it? Many have bought a recently designed governor…. PCU5000 A simple search should find the name… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-

Edo-Aire governor replaced with Woodward
GingerDan replied to GingerDan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I am aware of the PCU5000 as an option. With the modifications needed it would double my repair cost. If the plane were at my home base and I had long term plans with it I’d make the switch. Right now, I haven’t even gotten the plane home from purchasing it over a month ago. -
This PCU5000 prop governor MODEL ATH-1 came off of a Mooney after less then 100 hrs of use. Works well no problems at all. Selling because it was inadvertantly put on in error. If your Mooney has a Hartzell prop governor this is a direct replacement. $650 plus $20 for UPS ground conus. It was interesting flying home Saturday I experienced a governor failure in flight. Run up went well when I cycled the prop before takeoff I was climbing with lower than usual power since I was waiting for a second plane to catch up and the governor was controlling the prop After we were in cruise for a while I noticed that I could not apply full power and the RPMs were going up i.e. losing prop control. I was at a lower power setting than normal since the other plane is slower. As the flight progressed I had to reduce power to control the RPMs, and the governor was doing very little All other engine parameters were good, oil pressure, temp, EGT, CHTs etc. I was able to only maintain 14" of MP and keep the engine below 2700RPM I was ale to complete the flight at 100kts GS After I landed and before shutting down the engine I tried cycling the prop at 1800RM and nothing The engine only has 30SMOH, prop was OH and the governor (PCU5000) was OH, I installed it last year and it only has 130 hours total on it. I checked the prop cable and it was functioning fine I drained the oil and the finger screen was clean, oil filter was clean I removed the governor and the filter gasket was clean as well The governor is being sent back for check and OH

So it’s hard to tell exactly where the oil is coming from (shocker). This picture makes me think part of the leak is the oil line to the front of the engine. Should I have the shop replace both? I’m likely going to source an OHd Woodward for 1AMU less than the PCU5000.

The photo is a bit close up but mine looks pretty close to that. Both my clamps are straight tho. I had a reputable shop install a new pcu5000 a few months back so I and some confidence they did it right....
-
Well, the intrigue keeps going - Byam's checked the prop governor and she is bypassing very little but, not enough to cause the prop reaction so - we're removing the prop as Byam's suspects the prop may be 'gunked up' inside from limited use over the last 10 years. She was last resealed in 2010. Crossing fingers here. PCU5000 is being sent back as I already have the good McCauley according to Byam's. Nice that Byam's and Air-O Specialists are working to get things working. -Don

Hi! Unfortunately a worn cam lobe has triggered an overhaul of my 47 year old engine (IO360A1A 1800hrs, 21 years since oh) on my 1967 M20F. I have a Hartzell D1-6 governor driving a 3 blade Hartzell, last o/h at the same time as the engine. Shall I buy the PCU5000 or overhaul my D1-6 ?

I went new PCU5000 since my governor started bypassing. Installing it next week... -Don
