  1. Also, people spoke around the topic of survival equipment. Years ago living in Buffalo through the Blizzard of ‘77, I learned the importance of being prepared to deal with getting stranded. I built and carry a survival pack that has the essentials for surviving an off airport landing. Depending on the time of year or what I will be flying over, it will be reconfigured. 2. When I was based at KILG, I sub-leased my hangar from an aviation crash recovery company. Quite honestly, if you can’t control crash your plane, there isn’t much need for an ELT. The violence of a crash, even if the ELT survives, doesn’t mean you will. Where the advantage of an ELT (and personal ELT) is when you survive a crash landing in inhospitable terrain and recovery time is critical. And that is one reason you find remote activation switches in the cockpit. It is on your emergency checklist, right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
  3. The 406 MHz ELT by itself will bring the accuracy to 1 to 3 miles. In heavily wooded terrain, this could still take a long time to search. When you add GPS signal to it, the search area goes down to 100 yards or less. That could mean some substantial time savings during a search. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  4. I think Aspen is in a quandary when it comes to the E5. If they added an HSI, it would eat away at their PFD 1000 business and yet it not being there, gives Garmin an edge because it has an HSI. A couple of other points, I don’t believe the G5 comes standard with the magnetometer. It doesn’t look expensive but adds another cost to the bundle. The E5 comes standard with it. The E5 isn’t mentioned specifically as an IFR capable box because I believe they don’t want people selecting it over the PFD 1000. It has the course deviation indicators on the AI for precision approaches and just like those people who have just a mechanical AI, DG and CDI today, it will fly a non-precision on the CDI/DG unit on the bottom. 5. Hank - these are the guys Lasar buys from. They can provide any of the hoses you will need. Easy to work with and got me what I needed quickly. http://www.aircrafthose.com Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  6. How’d you get it in there? The rivets all look untouched. NEVER MIND, I SEE YOU HAVE SCREWS THERE! Mine has rivets. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

  8. The V speeds that are provided in the various POHs do vary. In older Mooneys the POH will call out a VFo and VFe. Newer Mooney POHs will call out a VFe only. VFe is the limitation in IAS where either full flaps or what they will called a “prescribed” position can be used. You will find that these speeds will vary In the various and same models. Mooneys built prior to the J models had a VFo and VFe speed which I believe are the same. What should dictate what flaps speeds should be used is what is dictated in YOUR POH. What I think precipitated some of this flap over flaps was the attachment issues. I know that older Mooneys had issues with damaged caused by operating the flaps at higher speeds. They most likely beefed this area up in later Mooneys. Even with that, you will see there is still some uncertainty of what is an acceptable speed limitation for full versus partial flap deployment. Here is a POH segment for 2 J models. Older J (POH revision date 1984). This one calls out a limitation for full flap but doesn’t clearly say it is okay to deploy above VFe. Although the word “given” may mean the range of flaps you can deploy. Newer J (POH revision date 1986). Two years later a revision that comes out that says it is okay to use partial flaps above VFe and clearly tells you the speed. Fast forward to 2007. An Ovation POH, doesn’t mention anything about partial flaps. But the tone makes it sound like you can deploy partial above that. But no indication what that speed limit is. For guys with newer Mooneys, the higher gear speeds and those with speed brakes should make this a moot point. For those of us stuck with low gear speeds and no speed brakes, we need to plan. 9. It shows the horizontal and vertical guidance on the AI, just like the PFD. The DG will show the localizer or GPS course indicator only. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  10. I would decide where you are headed with your avionics. The Aspen E5 can be upgraded to a full PFD with the capability to display a moving map, a full function HSI, winds aloft, full waypoint info and SVT/AoA. If you are going with the upgrade for IFR capability, I would go with either the Aspen or a dual G5. If plan on adding ADS-B In, you can display that on the Aspen PFD but not the G5. 13. I have never seen one installed up front on a Mooney. Probably because of metallic interference with the RSM’s magnetometer. I would call Mike at Aspen’s technical support and ask. He has always given me accurate technical info. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro
  14. If it is a PFD 1000, you can have an avionics shop convert it to a MFD. the configuration module may need to be changed out. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

  17. If there is no obvious fluid loss, the culprit is most likely the seals in the master cylinder. The Stat-O-Seal in the Cleveland version is supposed to be the most important one but when I replaced mine, there was one O ring that was showing a lot of wear and lost its shape. Both of these came out of my master cylinders. The one on the right came out of the right master that I was having issues with. The left one was in much better condition. If you have Cleveland masters, the internals will look like this. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

  22. Have you called any avionics shops. I know when I had more buttons added they came up with another yoke gizmo to allow it to be mounted. Perhaps they have them or know where to get them. Or even make them.
  23. I rebuilt mine but needed to trim the smaller O ring to get it to seal. They never chamfered the edge leading to the sealing chamber and the O ring was difficult to get in. After I put it together and verified it wasn't leaking, I am not using it. Haven't used in 28 years because it never worked.
