  1. I do not put anything in front of the oil cooler myself. On my return flight two days ago the outside air temperature was minus 20 Celcius. The oil temp was always in the green, so was the cyl head temp. i did fly one day many years ago at minus 30 Celcius which is my personal limit. When I took off, some dials were erratic but settled a few minutes later. The oil I use in winter is 15W50. This seems to be the way to go to prevent oil circulation issues at cold temps. Boreal one, what oil do you use? Yves
  2. Nope! However this item was the best to make people laugh. We have not encountered any significant snow accumulation during our trip. The line where snow on the ground start to appear is somewhere around Kansas at this point. Not sure if it is the same every year. Yves
  3. Me and the wife arrived yesterday from our trip to California. We departed Dec 27th with inclement weather. Here are some facts from this trip: Going to leg: Departure point : CYRO (Ottawa canada), Dep: Dec 27th Destination: KLGB (Long beach, CA), Arrived: Dec 31st, just in time for New Year! returning leg: departure point: KLGB dep: Jan 7th destination: CYND (Gatineau, Qc) Arrived: jan 9th Most hours flown in a day were 7 Most FBOs we stopped at at the end of day were organized to provide ground transportation (crew car or other) Best quality / price FBO we ran into: Borger TX Least quality / price FBO we ran into: St Clair county (Port Hope) MI Highest altitude flown: 10500 feet fastest groundspeed: 179 knots Total flight time, approx 36 hours Economical fuel consumption: measured at 8.5 gallons per hour for one hop. Oil comsumption: 2.0 quarts for the entire trip Our best thanks to Lacee and wife we visited in El Paso Our best thanks to Henry (N4474H) for arrangements in LB and formation (whale watching) flight This long journey greatly increased my confidence in my Mooney airplane. There was no mechanical issue whatsoever during that trip. We really enjoyed the south weather while we were there and our families up north would be frozen to minus 30 degrees. Thanks Yves C-FQKM
  4. Congratulation Lacee! Yves
  5. We saw whales for sure but at 500 feet and with not much contrast it was hard to define the whales shape from above. Yves
  6. This thing is upside down again! Sorry!
  7. Henry and I went today from Long beach for a formation flight and whales watching this morning. Photos attached. Yves
  8. OK Pierre. Thanks for the details. We are staying until either Sunday or Monday. It will be quite painful to go back where the shovel is required! -30C : I cannot imagine going back to this, Yesterday we took our grand-daughter to the park dressed in T-shirts. It was around 23 C J'essais de convaincre ma femme de venir vivre ici mais c'est pas facile. Bonne année! Yves
  9. We did not start 2014 flying but we did end 2013 flying, does it count? Hi Larry, how are things? We are in L.A. for the week. Yvs
  10. The previous flights were IFR and on the phone and I guess the briefers were able to properly designate the model type. Thanks folks! Happy New Year all! Yves
  11. Hi all. If you look at my flight track from yesterday: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/CFQKM/history/20131231/2033Z/E68/KLGB you will see that it shows the aircraft as a Turbo Mooney. I own a C! Obviously ATC misunderstood my aircraft model. When reporting, what should I tell them? M20P? Why do they use this suffix? Thanks. Yves
  12. Sorry the picture is upside down! Don 't know how to fix that. Yves
  13. Thanks again Lacee for your warm welcome. We will spend a few days in L.A. with our son and return where we need the shovel. Here is what we left behind. This explains why we need a shovel with us. The last month traumatized us and we don't go anywhere without our shovel now. Yves
  14. It was hard getting out of canada. When we took off from ottawa, planning to land in michigan, we had to divert to... peterborough! Snow precipitations made a wall of IFR visibility before us. When we tried again it was low ceilings. We barely made it later in that day to michigan to clear customs. We did 7 hours today with a nasty 40 knots headwind half of the way. I am now in Kansas and shall be in New Mexico tomorrow night. Yves
  15. Not likely Aaron. It would be nice to see again for sure. On my way there, I will overfly the following states: Michigan Illinois Missouri Kansas Oklahoma Texas New Mexico Arizona California
  16. Weather has been pretty bad here for the last few weeks. Keep shoveling every second day. As soon as the weather clears-up, I will take off, fly in a somehow southwest bound heading. Plan is to go visit my son near L.A. Will stop say Hi to Lacee along the way. This will not be as exciting as Mike's but will be challenging for a French Canadian :-) It will take about 18 hours flight time to get there. Yves
  17. Daver, the avionics shop that did the install happened to have a serviceable second hand GI106A that was taken out of a Cessna recently. I got it a bit cheaper than what bennett avionics sell these for so I am quite happy with it. This unit provides full features support. Yves
  18. If you move stuff around, you might not be able to move things in the exact hole you want to (such as standard "T" configuration). On my panel, I just added a new CDI to go with my new 430W. We planned to move the DG one spot left to allow both CDIs to be above one another however the avionics guy realized that the length of the DG would prevent full motion of the yoke. The end bracket would bang on the DG which is not good. The solution was to leave the DG where it is put the new CDI near the yoke. (One solution to this problem, for me, will be to find a shorter DG to replace the current one and then move st uff around the way I prefer. Hope this helps. Yves
  19. So who is who on there? Yves
  20. 11 years really?
  21. Very funny Mike! Did the parrot get paid more than the actor? Yves
  22. I have recently used the rehab service from PlaneCovers.com at $25. The cover came back with new straps and completely re-stiched. This extended the cover's life by 5 to 10 years. I prefer having two straps up front. Bruce's only has one. Yves
  23. Geez I wish one of my sons would take me on such a trip... actually, just wishing take me up for a round around the area... this is what i did to my dad several years ago but my sons have no interest in flying... About my dad: He was a private pilot when I was a teenager and took me up in a brand new mooney demonstrator for several flights. I guess this is what made me aware of the Mooney passion. When i finally got my license (without him knowing i was taking lessons), I surprised him one day telling we had an airplane ride with a friend and his eyes were kind of looking suspicious when i shown him the Cessna 150 him, me and that fake friend had to sit into. Yves
  24. Good luck Lacee! And if I manage to go see you at the end of the month, you'll he able to tell me more about it and celebrate in front of a good drink. Regards, Yves
  25. If I would follow your advise, I would not go outside for several months here! :-) Yves
