  1. This is the problem with piston engines going high. While a jet can make TAS to overcome any headwind a piston is a lot of times going to see negative GS at higher altitudes because the gain in TAS just doesn't offset the wind. I really only use mine a couple of times a year planned and it is nice when weather pops to where a less then stellar GS is better than landing and waiting.
  2. I carry a variety of things depending upon the terrain but as others have suggest a PLB is first and foremost. Clip it to you and use as needed, best piece of survival gear you can have. These days they can get to you fast if they can find you. Most of the bad incidents though are related to inability to find the plane or more importantly the passengers timely.
  3. Tom Brady is the Anti-Christ and probably flies a Bonanza. Go Blackhawks!!!
  4. I find hanger fairies do better work, but I am following you here :-)

  6. My experience has been that if the one on the prop rots off or breaks the spare isn't in any better. You can also have an issue if for whatever reason the spare gets loose. Belts are cheap so it should be easy enough to inspect and replace as needed to prevent the issue of it breaking in the first place.
  7. You see a lot of Cirrus's with tops as well. In my book it is engine management. If you use the right power settings, lean (ROP/LOP/PEAK) correctly, and ensure the cylinders don't get too hot or cold you don't have issues. Do it wrong and it is real easy to burn them up.
  8. A more recent article where Mike Busch describes his oil choice, frequency, and reasoning. http://www.avweb.com/news/savvyaviator/savvy_aviator_52_thinking_about_oil_changes_196730-1.html
  9. I have a Reiff Turbo XP with a pad on the oil cooler and a cowl cover. Whole set up including install was less than $1000 and in about 3hrs it has the entirety of the cowl at 70 degrees with cylinders and oil in triple digits. I park outside in North Dakota a couple of times each winter and even at -10 it warms right up. Nothing to carry but an extension cord. If you fly in the cold a lot it is going to be the best 1 AMU you spend.
  10. Multigrade oil is not all synthetic. Phillips 20W50 is multigrade and not synthetic. The main issue with synthetics is they do not handle dirt as well as real oil does. Car engines run very clean. Airplane engines run very dirty and no matter how LOP you run you are shooting a lot of gas and other stuff into the oil. I encourage everyone to watch the Mike Busch presentation I linked it is quite informative and fact based.
  11. http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx?v=1149666747001 Very good video on the topic including synthetic oils which 15-50W is.
  12. Yet the guy who invented Camguard says don't use 15W50. At the end of the day I think reasonable flying hours and frequent oil changes make a bigger difference than Camguard. That said I use it and change my oil every 3 months. For Continentals I really though question even more the need for Camguard.
  13. You Canadians with your KM/H!
  14. In the day an ADF approach was better than nothing and ADF airways were definitely interesting, but they really were great at showing how wind impacts a plane. I I love my Garmin but once or twice a year I buy paper charts and fly a Victor airway. It is sad in a way to see something's go :-(
  15. If you can find one :-)

  17. Same thought. From a safety standpoint rain really isn't a huge issue but it can very quickly trash your paint.
  18. Throttles are for cowards. I just safety wired mine WOT.
  19. I just overhauled mine and the #3 rocker gasket leaks just enough to make a little streak onto the side panel. I just got tired of messing with it and accepted it myself :-) Samething though if you pull the panel its dry it just weeps through the crack a bit. Some things I just accept as a mystery in aviation. A compressor, siphon spray attachment, and mineral spirits work good. Just be careful not to spray mags and vacuum pump. I find mineral spirits cleans just about anything. Similiar to Clarence's comment don't smoke and spray :-)

  21. If it was on correctly then the filter wouldn't have backed off the fitting.
  22. TN Bonanza would be a better option given your mission but a 252 is going to be a much cheaper capital investment. There are some nice TN Commanches out there as well which if you can find the right one would be the best of both worlds. How much are you looking to spend?
  23. I am a big fan on PLB's as well. Whenever I am out in the sticks I always clip mine to the belt loop. Much nicer if they find me, who cares about the plane.
  24. When a front passes it is often associated with a change of direction and wind speed. If you fly through one you can usually notice the change with a bit of a thump crossing it. With a tower when this happens they will update ATIS or call the wind change on frequency. Into an uncontrolled airport just one more reason to check the wind sock while on downwind (or what you may find is upwind).
