  1. Some fbo's and flight schools that manage leasebacks have been know to keep their favorite mechanic busy with repairs. Some months you owe them more than they owe you. The market may be weak, but decent planes priced accordingly still seem to sale.
  2. In addition to what has already been mentioned during the initial look over take a flashlight and look into the main wheel wells very closely. If their is any flakey or bulging aluminum don't bother to look any further.
  3. I put in a jpi 900 a few months ago and like it. It replaced all my instruments as primary, including fuel pressure. The limits on all these primary instruments are not changeable so they will be much higher than you want them to be (cht 475). Jpi has got around this by allow you to program pop up messages at any temp you want. So although the limit is still 475 you can configure it to alert you when it passes any set point you choose. Before that I had a 830 for a couple of years and never had any problems with it either.
  4. The magnet is a good idea, I got one one from spruce that had the magnet and rubber thread protector. I think it was around $20, but a dropped or damaged plug is over 3 times that.
  5. It's shown in the parts manual if you look on the page with the instrument plumbing.
  6. That's the best stuff. I used it on all 5 of my windows. It's a little messy, but a good tape job on both the window and plane will help a lot. It smooths down nicely with a finger wetted with dish washing liquid. If it gets somewhere it shouldn't don't smear it in, let it dry for a day or so and it can be removed easily with your finger nail. One of the places that sells it sells a cut off bolt to put in a drill for mixing it in the semi kit http://sealpakcoinc.com/product-category/application-systems/ It can be dispensed with a regular caulk gun if you cut away a little of the diameter of the piston on the gun.
  7. Whichever you decide to do one of these hole finders will make it easy to correctly locate the new hole. I would also use prc sealant instead of rtv or silicon. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/strapDuplicator.php?clickkey=3936
  8. It connects to the back of one of the instruments. I don't remember if it is the DG or horizon
  9. If your willing to accept an F that doesn't have any speed mods you may be able to find what you want. Usually the ones without the 201 front window and a few of the other desirable mods don't sell as well as the ones with the mods and the price is discounted to get them to sale. You may not find everything you want, but should be able to find one that has some of the things you want. The Brittain autopilot is much more common in this vintage plane than the Stec.
  10. It's a little easier to remove the top 2 bolts that hold the engine mount to the firewall than to remove the large engine mount bolts. The bottom 2 firewall bolts act as a hing and will allow the top of the engine to hinge out and down when supported.
  11. If you replace the pilot side panel with a flat panel that is offset, but at the same angle as the base panel and right side panel the angle will be about 24 deg and the IA and turn coordinator will have to be sent out for recalibration.
  12. I like the usairnet site for a quick look see. http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&sta=K79J&state=AL
  13. There is a picture in this article that shows the same people setting in an E and F model. http://www.mooneypilots.com/mapalog/M20F%20Evaluation/M20F_Evaluation_Report.html
  14. Strive for getting down and stopped in the 800 ft range. If you accomplish that then the takeoff is no different than the other discussions on here about operating from 2000 ft strips. Just make sure the ends are open.
  15. There is much more skill to be learned by doing stop and go's on a 3000' runway than touch and go's the same runway.
  16. The EI tach doesn't use a sensor, it just picks up the signal off the p-lead of the mag through a resistor. It comes with different value resistors and you may have to try different ones to get it to read correctly. Other tachs like JPI uses a Hall effect switch and senses the North and South Pole transitions of the magnet inside the mag. Because the ei is directly connected to the mag it is more prone to pick up noise if there is any present.
  17. The news article originally said "Go Around", now it has updated to say "Touch and Go".
  18. It used to be that 4 or 5 years of rental was about the same as a purchase. I purchased my Oxygen tank as sell as a Argon and CO2 tank that I use with my welder many years ago. I got them from the local welding gas supplier.
  19. The green strip is more likely to be 4130 steel than aluminum. Measure it to see what thickness and width it is and then you can order a 3ft piece from Aircraft Spruce for a few dollars.
  20. Congress should just pass another law that states if the part 23 rewrite is not completed by Dec 15 then the faa would be immediately stripped of it regulatory authority for all non comercial aircraft and their funding would be cut in half. You would be suprised how quickly it got done.
  21. My 406 had a 5 year battery's life instead of the normal 2 year so it really isn't that much more expensive.

  23. This TBM 700 is unresponsive and just passed over Cuba. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N900KN/history/20140905/1215Z/KROC/TADPO http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/05/us/norad-air-threat/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
  24. Aron, Thanks for the info, JPI had sent me the addendum earlier this week. They also had to send me a software upgrade to fix another issue.
  25. All last summer part of our runway was closed and we only had 2000 ft. I practiced some the weekend before it was blocked off and never used more than 1000 ft while it was closed. We also went to a grass strip that was only 1800 and was open on both ends and didn't have any problems. The one thing I did do is have several predetermined land/go around points and criteria for each picked out. On the takeoff, do not rush it by pulling up early before it's ready to fly. If you do the plane will get airborne with a nose high altitude and will not climb.
