  1. I just had my donuts replaced. Ground handling and landings are noticeably better. I suggested to my IA that he purchase them from Aerowhatever (primary distributor for Lords) where he has an account. He charged me $100/ea, I have no issue with that. Labor was 10 hours @$75. I know what it takes to replace donuts, I have no issue at all with this either. I have had no end of grief out of Mercedes service on my AMG and I can guarantee they do nothing for $75/hour. I only wish my IA could service AMG I'm a happy camper.
  2. Well, found the leak and it wasn't hard. Looks to me like the tube is pulled away (...a looong way) from the seat. How did it get that way and how to fix?
  3. AGREED! Thanks for the clarification.
  4. Are you saying LOP? Seriously, is 'extremely lean' leaner than LOP? My E has a GAMI spread of 0.1 and I run it LOP all the time.
  5. I think the wait list for t-hangars is in years.
  6. Too many years ago to count I had a used Porsche 914. I was doing a tune-up and needed a new distributor cap. I went to the Porsche dealer, showed the parts guy the cap and when he told me how much a new one would be I almost died. Then he said, "Kid, go over to the VW dealership and get your cap. It will be a fraction of the price and in a Bosch box, but it will work fine." He was right. I was told later that the Porsche parts went through more rigorous testing, etc., and it makes sense. The generic part was still on the car when I sold it a few years later.
  7. You just need to tighten a collar around your shaft, like this one from Climax:
  8. "all the right moves" Bravo sir, and thank you!
  9. What I found interesting was that the EGT reading was unaffected--I thought there might be a cooling effect.
  10. I don't know and that is a damn good question. I am guessing that the cert G5 is identical to the experimental, except for two things: 1) Tighter QC and tracking. Maybe the rejects from the cert line get packaged for experimentals 2) Tighter warranty and s/n tracking. Also, a bit more for the lawsuit war chest. I frankly cannot imagine that it is just a sticker or paper.
  11. My view is that is money tossed down the .... As you pointed out, a single G5 gives you an ADI with a battery backup as well as backup airspeed, heading, and altitude indicator. It also starts you towards a glass panel and removal of antiquated vacuum driven mechanical clocks (that's all they are).
  12. Good Jeez! Last week I thought about gators flying over Anahuac Bay and then this morning flying over the Neches River. Southeast Tejas is just crawling with gators. I imagine they would scatter when a Mooney plowed into the water, but it wouldn't take long for them to get curious.
  13. What about that big bare patch right in front of the tree line?
  14. If you have one you can just turn it in right now (CB card): L3 ESI-500 (x2) = $10,578 Garmin G5 (x2) = $5,950
  15. Certification is a beyotch, but the FAA is loosening a bit especially when all the experiments have already been done in the experimentals Just a waiting game for us cheap basterds. Every so often I hear the siren call of the EAA fleet. I go and browse the homebuilt sites, take a look at the quickbuild kits (getting too old for a multiyear project), and then I conclude that to get the equivalent of my E in safety and performance I'd wind up not flying for too long and have north of $100K when all the smoke cleared.
  16. I am planning to put dual G5's in and lose the vacuum driven instruments completely. I'll keep my vacuum pump for the AP and step, but if I lose it in flight I won't sweat it When you take a hard look at the G5 you'll be ready to drink the Kool-Aid. I have a love-hate relationship with Apple and Garmin is so much like them I've decided to just bite the bullet and have a ménage à trois.
  17. If we do not move to Wilmington we will retire to Austin. KEDC has T-hangars for $495/mo--ouch, but it is only 20 minutes from our place in Hyde Park. I think either KEDC or Henriksen got sued (or threatened) because the first time I landed there I told them to be careful about the nose gear and they were very adamant about 'knowing how to tow' Mooneys. I still tell them (and all other linemen) to be careful anyway. The Mistress has her original nose (gear) and it is as blemish free as the day she was made 52 years ago. Vigilance.
  18. Gonna need an A&P, now out of my wheelhouse. At this point I am just trying to minimize diagnostic time and learn things about the engine, thanks!
  19. OK, I think I found the leak. Solutions? Note drips on #2 fins.
  20. Thank you, my dear, it was a squeaker, wasn't it? The Mistress only puts down the step if the landing is good. Must be the new donuts! Flew KBPT<->KBPT for an hour today. Texas flying season is finally here again! Hazy as all get out
  21. Yes, exactly. You make this one 40' instead of 24' and just tack the hangar on the back. The problem is the building restrictions. I found out that Pilot's Ridge requires 1800 sf of living space (exclusive of hangar) minimum.
  22. Exactly! I could see a simple rectangle with a T-hangar in the back, living area/kitchenette and bedroom in the notches with a full length hall in the front. Pitched roof with attic storage, would just look like a small house from the front.
  23. This doctor recommends this (read the posts about urine-induced corrosion):
  24. <sigh> The wife...who has said no, absolutely not, forget it, painful and expensive divorce, etc., etc., etc. (see photos above of husband v wife hangars). So, we are looking at Wilmington as a retirement location and I found a nice little live-in air park called Pilot's Ridge Aero Plantation (03NC) with extremely competitive prices and a great runway. I noticed that there are a few homes for sale there and a large number of lots. So then I thought, well I can't have my cake and eat it too, but could I have cake? My thinking was I would buy a lot and build a hangar with an apartment. The absolute ultimate mancave and 'second home'. So you get in late from somewhere and just spend the night. You do your annual and put in 10 hour days without having to drive home. All my tools and other garage stuff, aviation stuff, etc. would move there so wifey would have it out of the house, win-win. So I contacted 03NC and have heard nothing. The issue, I am sure, has to do with the owners of the full-time homes. My argument is that a hangar home could be built relatively cheaply and designed to not look like a public T-hangar at the local muni. It would bring more planes into the development, which is something all of these places seem to be trying to do. Am I the only one who would invest in such a thing? I am not too worried about ROI as we are talking retirement here.
  25. I don't think so. The bird is registered to Stacey Nguyen and she doesn't appear to have a pilot's license. Prior to her it was registered to Craig Brown in Beaumont...that's what has me interested. I need to ask around down at the airport.
