  5. A couple years ago I installed an Avidyne IFD550 and an overall panel upgrade. I have been very happy with the IFD550, although I have only used it for VFR since I have never gotten it to work correctly with the Stec 60-2 AutoPilot. That's another subject we can discuss some time. My problem now is that the IFD has simply failed. I have attached two short videos. I last flew the plane on 5/29/2020 since my annual expired at the end of May, but I go out every couple weeks and run the engine for about 15 to 20 minutes. I have delayed starting on my annual because my long time AP had a stroke last year, and I am trying to work with another AP that will come to the Warsaw airport and work with me. I have the guy lined up and he will allow me to perform an assisted annual, but we just have not started on it yet due to scheduling (both his and mine). Having said all that, I went out to the hangar yesterday evening and pulled the plane out for it's 15 minute run on the tarmac and the IFD would not boot up. I think the video will explain. There was a difference if the engine was running or not??? Also, something that is not shown in the video is that the system voltage is running at 13.9 volts, whereas past JPI data shows it consistent at 14.2 +/- .1 volts. The IFD acts "better" if the engine is off and the ship voltage is setting at 11.9 Please watch the short videos, the 5964 is engine off, 5965 engine running Thanks, -mark IMG_5964.MOV IMG_5965.MOV

  9. Hi Mooney fans! Im from Advanced Aviation Reno Inc and we are a dealership and install facility for Dynon certified, Trutrak autopilots, Avidyne, Trig Avionics, JPI and Surefly ignition systems! We love all Mooneys and we work on them all the time. We've been waiting on TruTrak finishing certification on the Mooney variant of their autopilots but after chatting today with our contact at Dynon, it seems highly likely that the Dynon autopilot for the HDX may be ready at the same time, if not before! (I presume TT and Dynon may have been working together?who knows) We can also do Aspen E5 units and G5's on request and the Dynon display with integrate nicely with the TT- the Dynon version will be quite a bit cheaper and the overall cost is way cheaper than a Garmin G3X setup, both in equipment cost and installation time. So any Mooney work that needs doing (Avionics or mechanical) and you're in flying range of Reno give us a shout! Ask for me (Calum) and I can hook you up with a great avionics deal. We can give discounts on bundle deals like an Aspen and TT, or A dynon and Avidyne IFD email: avionics.aari@gmail.com facebook: @advancedaviationreno We also have a website but I haven't got around to overhauling it yet: www.advancedaviationreno.com

  11. Is it me or does Jeppesen have the worst web site in the world? Trying to sign up for a subscription to NavData for a new IFD440. The only option they have is for the 540, which I assume works for both. Buuuuut, it crashes when I go to my cart. Their support is around during Mountain Time. Seems really weird for a global aviation company. People in Japan have to order at 3:00 AM? As far as I could tell, there was no option to buy through Avidyne. Which also has a pretty cruddy web site. I registered my units and noticed that their support website hasn't been updated since 2014. Ugh. So does the IFD540 subscription work for the 440 and is Jeppesen the only place to get it?
  12. Scenarios: 1. We purchased the MLB100 with our Avidyne AXP 322 and IFD 540. 2. Also, we have a GDL39R being used with Garmin Pilot. 3. What we have noticed on the Garmin Pilot with a GDL-39 since around mid-2018, after the update, we now have access and can utilize the new FIS-B weather products are available such as the following: Lightning Turbulence Icing Cloud Tops Graphical AIRMET Center Weather Advisory 4. My question is since MLB unit is a NAVWORX unit and NAVWORX is out of business, will the MLB100 units receive any updates via Avidyne and/or any other 3rd party source that may take on these units. If no, then basically, we have invested into a product (that is only a couple of years old) that will not provide any current FIS-B functionality. OR 5. Will these new FIS-B WX products become available via a firmware update to the IFD 540? Now for another scenario 6. Will the Garmin GTX 345R work with the IFD540? This will allow us to remove both the AXP-322 and MLB100 and 1 unit in lieu of 2. 7. In addition to question #6 (if the 345R will work) will the newer ADS-B products be supported with the IFD unit? Overall it seems like the IFD unit will need a firmware update to support the newer ADS-B features since many of these features are consider map overlays that the end-user can toggle off and on. 8. Regardless if you fly with a Garmin GTN or Avidyne IFD series, why can't you have Winds aloft and FIS-B Radar displayed both at the same time? On the inexpensive Garmin Pilot app you can display both at the same time, but not on our $$,$$$ GPS units. 9. On the IFD100 will the newer FIS-B products be available? 10 What about the Skytrax 100? Is the the same operating system and different name? Is this a total different unit? and can any details be provided about the new ADS-B FIS-B products in regards of the Skytrax100 supporting these features? Sorry, I do not fly with Foreflight; although, I do have the Foreflight APP. Foreflight users are welcome to chime in just as long the points are related to this post. The same goes for Garmin GTN, Avidyne IFD users, and/or any other FIS-B equipment and application that is applicable. This posting is not about which unit is better or worst; however, the objective is to determine and/or gather information and functionality based on the details depicted within this posting. Thank you.
  13. Just got this in my email. If anyone is on the fence between Avidyne and Garmin it might be worth a look. I only got $6300 for my 430w BTW when upgrading.
  14. What chord is used to charge this keyboard? It says it’s a mini USB but it’s not one I’m familiar with. There is no online literature or reference anywhere including the Avidyne warehouse. Thanks for your help.
  15. Every month I update the data on my apps on my iPads. Since I fly with two iPads it takes a while. I thought I would time it today to see how long each app took to update. To the best of my knowledge I have about the same areas and the same information chosen to download on each app (western US, VFR, IFR & Jet). My Internet connection isn't the fastest. They took: Wing X Pro 87 minutes FltPlan Go 26 minutes AeroVie 15 minutes Fly Q 3 minutes Avidyne 2 minutes
  16. A common clearance here (ZHU) is the Industry Nine departure to the Industry VOR then... Problem is that this can't be entered into my Avidyne 440 without loading all the individual waypoints. It forces you to choose a transition. The clearance is commonly issued without a transition to lower level flights. Is there any way to do this without loading all the individual points?
  17. For those who have asked for more in depth training on the IFD series of navigators, we have teamed up with Master CFI Gary Reeves of PilotSafety.org to provide webinars, in person seminars and a video series. The first of many webinars are scheduled (see below). Wednesday, May 11th 6:30pm (Pacific) (Thursday May 12th 0100 UTC) https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1623049960924876036 For WINGS credit: http://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=68863&caller=/SPANS/events/EventList.aspx Monday, May 16th 2330 UTC 7:30pm (Central) https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4829957042899565057 Monday, May 16th 2230 UTC 6:30pm (Eastern) https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5528846215932681217 The first topic he will be covering is: Getting to know the Avidyne IFD 540/440 The IFD540 & IFD440 represent the next generation in FMS/GPS/ NAV/COM systems. They are plug-and play replacements for Garmin 530/430 systems. We will cover the new features including Hybrid Touch: Knobs & Buttons or Touch-Screen Wireless Keyboard Flight Plan Entry Graphical Flight Plan Editing GeoFill™ Reduces Data Entry Time Easy Loading of Approaches Entering a Hold is Easy “Next Leg” Depiction Easy Radio Tuning Multiple Frequency Formats and Station Readout Low-Fuel Protection Electronic Approach Charts and Airport Diagrams Terrain Awareness & FLTA Integrated WiFi & Bluetooth® Connectivity to iPad programs like FlyQ & ForeFlight Your speaker is Gary Reeves, ATP, Master CFI and the 2016 FAA Instructor of the Year for the WP region.
  18. Avidyne is offering their IFD550 with 'free' ADS-B I/O. It looks to be less than 20 AMU with all the necessary stuff to install. Since my IFR glass panel upgrade budget just happens to be 30 AMU, this looks like it may be the solution for me. Any comments from current owners? Avidyne seems to be the Avis to the Kool-Aid vendors Hertz; i.e., they try harder.
  19. Any of you guys have a pirep on Avidyne's IFD 100 app? Thanks
  20. Since there is so much debate and misinformation between the Garmin GTN & Avidyne IFD here is another video I made showing how you can fly an unpublished hold with the Avidyne. I searched for a video showing how to fly unpublished holds in the GTN and after my head stopped spinning I fell asleep. I was shocked how difficult is was with the Garmin unit and how easy it is with the Avidyne. Enjoy!
  21. It looks like I'm pulling and trading in most of my Garmin products for Avidyne. Out: Garmin 530W, 430W, 330ES, GDL-88 & GDL-69A In: Avidyne IFD-540, 440 (with WiFi & BT), AXP340 & SkyTrax 100 Keeping: GMA-340, KFC-150, KAS297B, KCS-55A, WX10A, Shading Miniflo & EI GEM (that will be the next upgrade)
