  1. Amen, brother! Maybe multi-Mooney Summit attendees can do the same, too. Time sure does fly, doesn't it? Not just our airplanes . . . Next week will make 10 years 4 months, and you are closing in on your decade mark yourself. With more posts than Parker and I combined!
  2. I've been based at two fields with active jumpers. There was minimal interference, other than occasionally waiting a minute to takeoff or enter the pattern. There was also minimal interaction between the two groups. Decent behavior in the air and radio broadcasts both ways will make it simple. Don't try to beat jumpers to the ground, make a single 360 while waiting for them to land, and keep a close eye on them (and count chutes in the air).
  3. Never seen a plane with no EGT at all . . . Does it still eventually smooth out as you richen it?
  4. Carb heat will make the mixture richer at any throttle & RPM setting, by reducing the amount of air coming in (engine intake is a fixed volume, but warm air is lower density). If too rich for conditions it may stumble; if too lean for the power setting, it WILL run rough with less power than desired.
  5. Since it's a new Acclaim, it's probably known ice, so that would be alcohol spray for the windshield [or something else to keep it clear].
  6. You've got to slap that businessman into subjection! Talk to your wife about safety, traveling convenience and comfort, and take her places that she wants to go. Then you can go some places that you want to go. See @Marauder's experience for getting your wife to suggest upgrades! Please ignore the actual numbers, just make sure you can foot the bills when they come due. My wife knows what I paid for the plane, and what one [pricey] annual cost [sort of cost, there were some unexpected failures that year]. All I really track are operating expenses--insurance, GPS databases, fuel and oil [which I change myself, what I call "the costs to fly]". Everything else is the cost to be able to fly. Only ever discuss the former set of numbers with your wife . . . . and try hard to forget the second set yourself. Have fun, and make your plane whatever you want it to be. How much payback did you get on your motorcycle for those extra-large saddlebags, or chromed crash bars / master cylinder cover anyway?
  7. My C only begins running rough when I lean it past peak EGT. Since resurrecting my doghouse and carb heat apparatus, I can generally get about 25° LOP at altitude before it starts. Note that I have only the factory single-point EGT. When it's extra cold out, my Owners Manual says to add 1% to the power shown in the Performance Tables for every 10°F that temps are above ISA. The engine will make more power at a given MP / RPM combo, so you won't be able to lean as far before getting rough. Check where the vibration starts as you lean compared to where your EGT peaks. It doesn't matter if your gage has no numbers, each mark is 25°F. Lean to.peak, then enrichen. Real old school is lean to rough, enrichen til smooth . . . .

  12. Sorry to hear that, Neil. Lots of people like the big doors on Cardinals, with no wing strut and the same engine as in Mooneys. Won't go quite as fast, though. They are available with fixed gear or retracts, to suit your needs. Are ya'll gonna join us for the Summit this fall anyway?

  14. I feel your pain! My C's tanks were resealed 700nm from home. Fortunately at that time a friend with an F needed someone to fly his plane on a couple of round-robin flights and I was the only person he knew with enough Mooney hours to satisfy his insurance co. It all worked well, despite his surprise that my first question after buckling in with him on an orientation flight was "where's the checklist?"

  17. Hot starts for the injected engines are troublesome for many. Search here for "hot start" for many methods. My C is carbureted, so I can't offer any other assistance. Although some here insist that the IO engines are not difficult to hot start . . . .
  18. GeeBee will make a set, but he requires length between fittings for each. I called www.aircrafthoses.com and LASAR; turns out they are Dan's supplier. Oops! Have a set coming; fuel lines firesleeved from firewall to pump to carb. $980-something for a full set of oil & fuel. Mine are quite stiff, dating from the PO's Signature overhaul in 2002. They needed make, model, year and serial number of the plane, and any modifcations to the engine (I have none). This annual is with my 4th IA since buying the plane in 2007 (I moved once and had one independent IA retire), and he removed the rear oil plug for the first time since it was installed; he expected to find "a lot of junk" since it still had the manufacturer's seal on it, but we were both happy that he found nothing. He also sounded surprised that my compressions are all still strong (c. 850 on the tach). She flies well and climbs nice in all but the hottest Alabama summer weather.
  19. I used to get "altitude headaches" after buying the Mooney. Then I bought the Halos and no linger have post-flight headaches. I gave away the several pairs of included foam tips in several sizes.
  20. I run higher RPM at higher altitudes--2300 down low, 2400 at mid altitudes, 2500 up high. To go slow (on approach, in the pattern, flightseeing or flying witb Cessnas), I generally set 2300 and reduce the throttle as needed / desired.
  21. In the rare event that you don't like them, you can return them or post them for sale here--they usually sell immediately at full price. I've been happily using mine for 8 years. P.S.--the silicone tips are the way to go. I wore foamies at work only until I found that the nurse stocks two styles of silicone plugs.
  22. How so? It's slower, so people automatically assume that means lower stress on the motor and longer life. But I've never seen any data either way, only opinions and pronouncements.
  23. That'd be mine and his'n, respectively. My hand crank is 52 turns, so halving the gear ratio should double it to 104 turns of that rotating handle. Doesn't sound like fun. The one time I needed it for real, the wheels were mostly down when I lost electricity, only got about 6 turns before it stopped. But the floor indicator showed good, I landed smoothly and taxied to the hangar., no problem. Until the door handle broke instead of opening . . . . .
  24. I thought blue fluorescent lights were hard to make . . . . You mean there are special lubricants for oil filter seals? I've used fresh oil from Quart #1 (inside the cap of the "new" plastic bottles) ever since I was a teenager and had to poke a hole in the metal lid and shake the can to get some on my finger. It's also good to hear that I'm not the only one here who doesn't do oil analysis.
