  1. I usually give mine to the guy in the back seat and tell them to monitor the radio. You can't believe some of the looks I get
  2. Actually the original idea for BasicMed was no medical exam at all. Remember the driver's license medical? It was headed that way until a not to be named Senator insisted on inserting the medical exam ....... At the time everyone thought it was the AMA lobby behind it but with all the doctors refusing to perform BasicMed exams now I wonder..........
  3. You will need to file a flight plan (VFR or IFR) and they might want the location and time you plan to cross the border when you file. the first part of your flight will be in Toronto airspace but it really doesn't matter. About half way you will switch to Cleveland Center. Overflight is still an FAA domestic flight, there are no international requirements in the air. (Customs not required) It might be a good idea to carry your passport. IF you would find it necessary to land in Canada everything will change and you will need to clear customs. I
  4. Experience might not but a big dose of FLY MORE is never a bad thing. We get rusty when we don't fly often. So go more often. Fly. Fly some more. Go even when you don't have a reason to go. Fly, Fly, Fly
  5. I have a McCauley 2A34C239/90DMC-15 removed from a M20S It has TKS de-ice boots on the blades. Hub, prop, backplate and polished spinner.
  6. Is the engine still under warranty? What does the rebuilder say?
  7. 2.3.4.7. Rate of Turn Indicator A Rate of Turn Indicator (Figure 2-2, No. 48) with a range of 0 to 6 degrees per second is provided for both the 360 and ARC Compass Modes. The indicator consists of a curved white tape that extends from the Numerical Heading Indicator’s lubber line and in the direction of the turn, along the outer curve of the compass card. The Rate of Turn Indicator features an outer thick white tick mark for a Standard Rate turn, and an inner thin white tick mark for Half-Standard Rate turns. A Standard Rate, two-minute turn equals 3 degrees per second. When the rate of turn exceeds 6 degrees per second, an arrowhead is added to the end of the tape to show that the rate of turn has exceeded the limits of the indicator (Figure 2-46).
  8. the whole idea is efficiency. BSFC minimum is around -40°F LOP this varies a little bit but if you are close to that you are getted the biggest bank for the buck from your engine. Leaner than that just slows you down. Richer than that just wastes gas.
  9. Sounds like you are doing fine. The cart is used to purge the system when some panels are clogged and not working.
  10. You can still get one of these KI 525A Pictorial navigation indicator that simplifies course orientation, interception, and tracking Starting at $12,973 MSRP
  11. FYI .................... Greenville Air Avionics is advertising an Aspen PFD Pro 1000 installed for $9,100. Just sayin'
  12. A couple of comments 1. the data above from the Avidyne forum was posted on 16 August 2016. 2. the equipment pairing (as required) is called out in the Avidyne install manual rev 12 dated (3/15/17) paragraph 6.12 page 85 Garmin GTX335 GTX345 "The IFD4XX/IFD5XX AML STC approves ADS-B out capability for this ADS-B OUT transmitter and GNSS position sensor combination to comply with 91.227." 3. the install manual is part of the Approved Model List STC. Appendix B: STC Permission Avidyne Corporation hereby grants to all National Aviation Authorities (FAA, CAA, JAA, etc) approved installers the use of data from STC SA00343BO to install the Avidyne IFD5XX/4XX System. This also includes any international validations of the STC (e.g. EASA, ANAC, etc). Copies of the STC data are available on the Avidyne website Technical Publications page or upon request. The latest data revisions are listed in Avidyne 700-00182-XXX/700-00179-XXX Master Document List, AVIFD-306. Installers must abide by the conditions and limitations stated in both the STC and in the Installation Manual in order to maintain compliance. The use of this data by itself does not constitute installation approval. Therefore: fully approved "legal" installation of this combination of equipment is current FAA recognized.
  13. What is the gross wt. 3200# or 3368# You can get 168# with the Ovation 3 upgrade STC.
  14. hear is another comment from the Beechtalk forum "Here's the thing....the money isn't even close. I think the GTN is at least $5k more and you have to pay at least $5k to install it. I get that its Garmin and that is all a lot of people need to hear but the truth is that if Garmin had come out with the IFD540 and Avidyne was selling the GTN750, I think Avidyne would go under. Anyone with a GNS530 thinking about upgrading to the GTN750, do yourself a favor and go fly the IFD540 before you decide."
  15. As for the plug and play installation............. Yes, but maybe NO. The GTX 345 outputs weather on the RS 422 line to one of the RS 232 inputs of the GPS. Unless this line was installed when the GTX 345 was put in it will have to be added now in order to get the ADS-B weather. If you can currently get weather on your GNS 430W, you will get it on the IFD440
  16. The following is from the Avidyne AFMS manual. I think this is the link you are looking for. The Garmin GTX 345 requires an approved GPS/SBAS source. This statement allows connection to "other avionic systems" which would include the GTX 345 among others.
  17. There is no such thing as an STC to connect equipment. The STC approves the equipment to be installed in the airplane. Everything else is compatibility. The latest software version 10.2 for Avidyne (which is STC approved to install in your plane) includes the ability to interface with the Garmin GTX 345.
  18. I would not be doing any business with that avionics shop! They are not up to speed or mis-informed. What else they don't know is questionable.
  19. I have the panel mount GTX345 not the "r" connected via ARINC 429 for traffic and it works fine. I don't have the weather connected
  20. Is that an invitation?
  21. I thought a report stated the pilot reported to ATC that he was going down?
  22. Once again "fake news". As described above all the fancy math says is the surface area of the screen is larger on the GTN750. It has nothing to do with how sharp the display is. Although the screen size is actually larger, the viewing area of that screen is limited by what is allowed to be displayed. Both the GTN750 and IFD 540 have fixed panels on the left and right of the screen for things like COM freq, Waypoints, Speed etc. Not all the surface area of the screen is used in the same way so trying to measure the absolute screen size and make a comparison is USELESS. You need to compare the areas that are used for the same purposes.
  23. Regardless of the selection you make, when you do these phased installations it will be very helpful to have your installer put all the wires in the avionics boxes during the installation even if you don't need them at the time. I mean have the installer pre wire ALL the ARINC 429 and RS 232 connections even if they don't get connected. Have the installer route the open end of the wire to a place that is easy to access. The next addition to the panel will be so much easier to install.
  24. I wonder how some of these "non standard" panel installations will effect the resale price of the plane? With all the new choices in certified and non-certified avionics that are being installed in our planes the combinations could be endless......
  25. FYI, again from a different forum re: G500 trade-in on tXi "As for Garmin, I’ve been told they will be using hardware out of display trade-ins for warranty support." My Comment: Whaaaatt? I thought the "new" tXi was new hardware/technology??? What could they possible be using from the "old" boxes? Unless the "new" tXi is just "lipstick on a pig" masquerading as an upgrade. Besides what respectable company would try to pass off used parts as warranty repairs??????
