  1. Im over here thinking you where talking about getting a checkout flight in a PBY Catalina. Ha! I would imagine a few of the local schools probably have a CFI they know of that has done this enough for the specialty of the airport. Best of luck finding one!
  2. I often wonder how much w&b would change if all the old avionics and wire got removed....
  3. I think thats for a LORAN unit. Comes up as a loran dimmer module with a google search.
  4. you should be able to grab the data right from the POH
  5. College station? Going off the name
  6. With all the Houston based Mooney's, we should have a get together.
  7. Run. Run now or forever be hooked! Joking aside. If you know Ray over at E&E at hooks, he's a great mechanic. I think Texas Flight also has on site mechanics as well. Both of the on field mechanics at LVJ are great as well. Sadly hanger space is hard to come by at both of those places. There is also IWS, GSR, etc... in the Houston area. even EFD has some GA hangers, though it might be a bit harder to fly in and out there. The real name of the game is where you can find hanger space these days. Some people will park out on the ramp but in the Texas sun and this close to the coast, it can be kind of hellish on the paint/metal of the planes. Definitely invest in some sun shades for the interior as well.
  8. Welcome to the Houston crew! As a first plane, it might be a bit much as a fresh PPL, but its not totally unheard of. 200 a year is quite a bit though. Most people average somewhere between 50-100. I will say, i bought my E because i was tired of renting, and it was an amazing choice. It has NOT be any cheaper though, just more convenient time wise. With you planning to fly a whole lot, that could be very different. I would sit down and look at what you really want/goals/trips to go and decide if the K fits your plan. The specific one you're looking at seems like a nicely put together platform already. Hell if I wasnt so attached to my E i might look at getting that plane. Coming from the warrior 2 /archer/ p28a line, you're going to find the low wing pretty similar with only a few differences really. If you landing are lousy, its because you havnt practice them enough! In the archer I used to fly frequently. Any extra 5knots of speed was a lousy landing. The same is very true for Mooney's, and really for any airplane. As far as specific Mooney AP, i dont really know, but i know of 3 decent shops in Houston area that have never steered me wrong. One a KDWH and two ad KLVJ. Other than that, have you every ridden in a Mooney before?
  9. Happy wife... Happy life...
  10. Isnt that the dude who speculated on all the crashes and then went and crashed his own plane?
  11. I personally dont like it but i know a few CFIs in the area that have done it.
  12. I would guess that for the pattern, it might be okay, but for departing the area you probably wouldnt have been able to get far with the cloud base. Just a guess.
  13. This goes for any single for me. Failure on the runway, bring it to a stop. Failure on the air, we're going straight ahead +/- 30 degrees. 1000 feet agl we can attempt to trun back to the airport. I figure the worst case for singles is losing around 800ft in the turn, but its not just a 180 turn, its turning over that, getting lined back up, and having room to maneuver to land as well. Now most of the time i've made a turn somewhere around 700ft AGL for the traffic pattern or departure of the area, but it a variety of factors really. I could probably make the turn back at 700 but i would need to be ontop of the plane. As some have said, go out and practice this higher up. Itll be a little different than the real thing but still good practice.
  14. I remember doing demonstration in a travel air and I want to say it was like 48 cranks to get the gear down. It worked, sure, but dam was it a pain.
  15. I had to look up what a TEC route was cause of this. TIL. It looks like foreflight put out a thing in 2019 about finding them in the A/FD, but honestly ive never heard of them and would wager they probably arnt used much anymore with the advance of ipad style EFBs and electronic filings. The only other information i can find about them is they where used in the SoCal area. https://support.foreflight.com/hc/en-us/articles/204023295-Where-can-I-find-Terminal-Enroute-Control-TEC-routes- It appears you can search and get a list of certain TEC routes here as well. https://www.fly.faa.gov/rmt/nfdc_preferred_routes_database.jsp
  16. Id be more than willing to bet the factory gauge is inaccurate, but so long as its working and not in the red, id trust what the jpi says.
  17. I dont think it matters either way so long as everything else is good with the engine. Though ive always been told if you want to fly fast, its ROP. LOP is for going far. I normally run ROP in planes that dont have proper CHT monitoring though.
  18. Whoops, wrong reply chain. Yes, come to the Mooney side of the force. With the tail on backwards!
  19. Ouch. Glad you got it down safely. Was this on the same C you where talking about before? Did you have a prebuy done?
  20. Its a terrible decision. You should buy 2. For real though, you have access to this 182. Is it a club or a friend? that makes a big difference. If its a club and say it doesnt have overnights, that still leaves scheduling and other people wanting to use the airplane. With my own plane. If i decide friday morning i want bbq in another city and can just got hop in the plane and go, no problem. And if i want to stay the night, i only pay the ramp fee more than not.
  21. iws aint that bad. Could use an update to their ASOS but the ways of inner city airports seems to be dying slowly.
  22. I miss that place. Ive done some flight in and out of the private field just north of there, as well as hooks, iah, hou, cxo, etc.
  23. Either way you look at it, im gonna need another coat.
  24. Haha okay fair. I probably will feel that way when i get up there in time. I just dont see IFR as that much extra work right now. Thats when i bug friends to take me in the aerobatic planes!
  25. Come on, dont you want your head in the clouds?
