  1. More like touch up paint, 30k in avionics that was planned, and an overhaul of the prop that turned into a new prop, plus an additional 20k. When i hear leak on airplane that hasnt flown since the 90s after an accident, i think big leak.

  4. I would think pump or fuel tank vent would be the other causes here. Temp might have some play in this as well.
  5. I would say if the tanks are leaking, its time to seal them, otherwise how would you know how much fuel you have. I wouldn't wait on that at all. However, the fact the firewall has wrinkles sounds like a deal breaker to me. How good of a "deal" is this airplane. If its like $10,000 then sure, its probably a great deal. But if its $40k+ then you're probably going to spend somewhere around 60-80k minimum. Granted, it depends on how/if it was repaired. For a reference. I got my E after it had been sitting for 15 years. I got a VERY good deal on it and still had many things to fix. $20G + some over what i paid for it, its now flyable. The major things with mine where paint and avionics, as well as a new prop.

  9. No you're absolutely correct they do. That contradicts what my AP was telling me today about how my panel is wired up. Ill have to have a look at it tomorrow.
  10. So i went over this with my AP today. The G5 is the primary alt for my plane and has since been approved for use airplanes. He didnt get into the specifics, but just that all my alt information comes from my G5 now.
  11. I do this before and after almost every flight in any plane. Sometimes on the data plate or cowling since some planes i fly dont have props.
  12. OH man you're diving into it just like i did, ha. I really like some of the pictures you've got posted up. My favorite kinda of flying shots are the one at or right above a sea of clouds. Theres one really cool one you've got with the light from the beacon reflecting off your wing at night and a orange spot in the clouds. Reminds me i need to be sure to have my camera accessible when i do my trip here next month. If you havnt looked into photo processing tools on the computer yet, Rawtherapee is the free software i use. Its like adobe lightroom somewhat.
  13. Sounds like one of the servos sticking / going bad. There's been a few reports of that, and one of our club planes had that happen.
  14. What shooting mode do you use? Shutter, aperture, or full manual? I find it easier to start with full aperture control. Of course setting a good ISO speed is good too. Most of my pictures are of parts or wild life, but i do have a few good airplane shots. Compression is probably going to kill these...
  15. Ask me about the impulse buy during the lockdown i made on a Sony mirrorless camera... That lumix doesnt look like anything to sneeze at and looks like you're getting quite a few good shots already! What it more sounds like is we need to set up a "photography" section of the forums so you and i and anyone else who likes to take pictures can all share our aviation adventures!
  16. First of, and archer is a GREAT airplane. Second of, the Mooney is a better airplane. There's no biased in those statements at all, i promise.
  17. Anything that interrupts smooth flow of air around the body of an aircraft is going to cause some drag. While its not totally (or easily) relatable, you can break it down to its basic physics form D = Cd * ( p * V^2 ) / 2 *A . Any change in area or the coefficient of drag, in this case the gear, is going to change the total drag on the aircraft.
  18. I generally see more error on the steam gauge in my airplane, but it does vary from plane to plane. We have 3 G5 planes here so ill take a look at those as well. Defiantly something im going to be keeping my eyes on for a good while now, double so in my own plane.
  19. Does this still hold true? I thought the STCs changed that if you had 2 of them installed but im probably mistaken. Well they can be +/- 75 feet of field elevation, so 200 might be a bit much, but i would always expect a little error.
  20. If the cowling has been replaced, then its likely not there. Coving a hole also helps reduce air resistance. Less air resistance, more efficient going through the air.
  21. Most of the time its because the seal around the flap degraded and had to be replaced, so they disconnected and sealed it up at some point. Ive thought about doing it. On the E model, as ive been told, its actually helpful. On the J and up it seem the cowling has changed enough it doesnt really matter anymore.

  24. Oh yeah, it does say that under our names... Well going off that and the 1978 J POH I find, It says retract in climb after clearing obstacle. I dont think it means literally going to 105-115 to bring the gear up, just getting over that 50ft mark, which is going to happen rather fast anyways.
  25. Which POH? The one for my M20E says for Vx climbs, full power gears and flaps up, 94MPH. For all take off retract the gear as soon as the airplane is airborne and under good control.
