I'm sure this has long been taken care of, but if you're reading this in the future... see if you can find someone local and fly them with you to your new plane and then fly back home with them. This is sort of how I did mine. I am PP only and the weather didn't cooperate for me to get the transition training done in Texas. So we picked a day that I could fly VFR back to Memphis with him and then I paid my transition CFI's room and board and flight back home.

WaynePierce replied to 201er's topic in General Mooney Talk
Do you have any idea if there will be landing fee's? I can't imagine how grueling that flight must have been... Good job with the Parrots and kid!- 33 replies

Camera systems and mounting points for flight recording
WaynePierce replied to r0ckst4r's topic in General Mooney Talk
I'm not intending to steal this thread but I've thought about this numerous times. My main goal was to mount on the rear tie down to help me better understand my flare and landing. But, I have a rear tie-down unlike any I've seen it's like a 3/8 rebar almost. Do any of you have this type and what do you you use on it if anything? -
Interested in purchasing a J model, have some questions
WaynePierce replied to Ryan ORL's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Ryan, I haven't read through the entire thread but what I did read was great information. I was in your price range two years ago when I bought my J. If no one else has mentioned it, Jimmy Garrison is your friend contact him and he will put you on an email list with what he's got coming in. This is how I found my J. https://www.gmaxamericanaircraft.com/ -
Ha! My Dad flew 141As and I have gray hair... I have kids and grandkids in Greensboro, I've been known to fly over there from time to time. I have a "J".

Aircraft Heaters has a device specifically for the cabin (costs less than the Hornet). I just purchased a small ceramic heater (Vornado) for under 20 bucks. It has a high/low/fan option, physical on/off switch and a safety switch on the bottom that turns the unit off if it gets knocked over. I got it today and I've been running it on low all morning. It is not hot to the touch and I think it will do fine. I'm going to plug it in to an extension chord that will be plugged in to a low temperature sensing outlet (Thermo Cube) I've also got a Twin Hornet II coming, hopefully tomorrow for the engine. Amazon just brought my moving blanket for the top of the cowl as I was typing this. Granted it doesn't get nearly as cold in Memphis as it does in the District but this should be fine for the few days that do get cold.

Some of you will have seen this on FaceBook, but I picked up the plane from the Avionics shop and took it immediately to annual 16 miles down the crows path. Got everything paid for so it's real now. I have a BFR scheduled with one of our MS CFI's in Muscle Shoals on Saturday. I hope I have enough bank left to fill the tanks and pay Rick to teach me how to fly again...

Georgia to California flight update.
WaynePierce replied to rbridges's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
You're Cirrus definitely has better seats than my Mooney! I couldn't possibly do a 12 hour flight with my seats. (well in my defense my seats are probably much older than yours are in the Cirrus) -
Just Plane Silly released a Mooney video this morning

I bet they got sued by the homebuilder and the Lawyers for Gates said, "no more".

If he already has a Class 3 Medical Certificate, be sure he researches as much as possible before going in to see his AME. If he has his medical now and it gets denied upon renewal he will not be eligible for BasicMed. If he doesn't have his Cert. now it would still be good to know what his AME is likely to do. Maybe a discussion with Dr. Bruce Chien before he goes forward?

How can you even inspect this part on my J? Is there a plate there? Not at the plane or I'd look, but I will be later today and I will.

Me too! I was thinking I was going to have to start a "Banned MooneySpace" members page.

Missed you. I'm glad everything came back right (at least it appears to be)

I had read originally that the truck driver didn't slow down and just kept driving leading to questions about his legality to be in Country, one video I saw this morning did show the truck pulling over and stopping on the shoulder. I hope he stayed for the accident report. I would also think it would be fairly easy to track the individual down there has to be a heck of a gash on the right front of the truck.

Dual mag single mag failure
WaynePierce replied to Tim Jodice's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
I've had this issue before, but luckily I was on the ground. But, if flying and I lose a mag (I have the -D engine) I would do the mag check, just like on the ground but while flying? If I find I have a dead mag, before I turn back to both, or the good mag, I should pull the power to idle before I turn the key back? This whole scenario, while flying is frightening. I've never run a tank completely dry, either. I like the sound in the cabin rather than the silence. -
I don't know who Ted was either but I think his last name started with an X.
-
I would become familiar with https://www.gmaxamericanaircraft.com/ Jimmy Garrison normally has some on-hand but he also provides the opportunity to be put on his email list to receive updates on new planes he has coming in. That's the route I took and have been happy with the decisions.

So here's a random question... Why do some airplanes, in general, Mooney's in particular, and my Mooney specifically not have Static Wicks and some do? Mine does not and it doesn't appear it ever has. 1985 M20 J SE if it matters. curious minds and all that.

Retirement / Pilot life in Florida?
WaynePierce replied to MooneyMike's topic in Florida Mooney Flyers
Ross Statham, Is it alright if I call you or IM you. My wife and I are both from Bonifay (HS classes of 76 and 77) and looking to retire in just under two years. We were thinking North Carolina mountains but the wife is now wanting to be close to her Mom in the future. I checked on the minutes from this months meeting and it appears there are now 4 on the waiting list for hangars. We’ve got an 85 J we’re bringing with us. I would like to find out what the airport is really like. We fly in there quite a lot on the weekends now. -
Good to know that plant based links can't hold their shape, either. According to a friend.
