One thing I would like to see changed because it just drives me nuts is the rules for software updates. As pilots we can load databases on a USB thumb drive and be trusted to update our GPS units. For some reason that escapes me, I can't load a software update without an A&P sign-off. Literally all you do is put the drive in the GPS, press the button to install new software, and then wait 30 minutes until it either says "update complete" or "update failed". Please if the FAA is listening, add software updates to the list of approved pilot maintenance.

I feel your pain. I had 2 AV-30'S installed at a shop and everything powered up and tested great. The airspeed and altitude on the AV-30'S are not primary so during my takeoff roll my scan was mainly engine instruments and airspeed. Once flying i realized I had no airspeed on the AV-30'S and the altitude was way low. Come to find out, they swapped the pitot and static lines. Having said that, I just don't ever see the FAA giving us the same privilege the experimental community has when it comes to maintenance.

Very cool idea.

What switches are required on panel for electric step?
MoonFlyer68 replied to rbridges's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have mine wired to the beacon switch. -
I tried.

I know it says F and J models, but if you can use these at all it will certainly help with the overall cost.

Sorry about that. They were out of order, but still, I never turned the page. The missing pages. STEC 10138-1-L.pdfSTEC 10138-1-R.pdf

Due to the size of the drawings and limitations of the scanner, each one is two PDF's, a left and a right. I also tried to make sure that the fold cutoff was not at a critical area of the diagram. If you need any more drawings, I have all of them for the 901 interfacing to basically any STEC autopilot. I cost me $160 to get all the drawings on Ebay but they have been well worth it. When the shop installed my system I was able to figure out from the drawings that they left out a wire and that was causing the system to not work.

I was able to purchase all the drawings for the ST-901 and used them to troubleshoot my autopilot. If you know the specific drawing number I can scan it for you. Or, what autopilot are you interfacing the 901 into and I will find the drawing that should apply.

Not sure if it was brought up on Mooneyspace before, but a while ago this YouTube guy intentionally bought a plane just to film himself bailing out mid flight because he said the engine quit. He then recovered the wreckage so the FAA couldn't examine it. Not sure exactly what punishment he will get yet, but he is pleading guilty to some federal charges. Here is the link. https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/11/us/trevor-jacob-youtuber-plead-guilty-federal-charge

Camera systems and mounting points for flight recording

That is one intense mount you have there. -
Prices Reduced items from 1975 M20C
MoonFlyer68 replied to R Van Dyck's topic in Avionics / Parts Classifieds
Question for you if you happen to know the answer, are those the same toe pedals that would be used if I was to ever upgrade my Mooney to right side brakes? If so, I may take them off your hands. Thanks -
I would like to be next in line for the seats if the previous guy falls through. Thanks

201 Windscreen & Cowl Mod Cost
MoonFlyer68 replied to Huckster79's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
When I purchased my F model it already had the 201 windshield mod and there is no denying that it looks great. Having said that, there are also times that I curse not having easier ability to access the back of the instrument panel. There have been some that have done the 201 mod and still left very small access panels at the very outside corners. while small and not ideal, I would assume at least some access is better than zero access. -
I’m going to go ahead and put this BS here again

Has there been any updates from the FAA or otherwise on the legality of the parts in question? -
Unfortunately I am overseas for work so I can't get a picture. I got the idea from a post somewhere about a guy 3D printing a holder for the GATS jar and attaching it to the nose gear door. I can't seem to find that post right now. If I do, I will link to it. EDIT: I found it. It was not on Mooneyspace so the search function didn't work. I didn't 3D print anything, just used a cheap portable car cup holder and clipped it on. https://www.printables.com/model/207825-mooney-m20-gats-jar-holder
-
What i did was buy a cheap plastic cup holder for a car and the use a small clamp to attach it to the nose gear door. Once it is in position with the GATS jar in it, it is only an inch or 2 below the drain.

I am currently overseas for work and will be here until the end of May. Once I am home I will be posting some for sale if you haven't found any yet.

Multiple OAT's and GPS antennas
MoonFlyer68 replied to TuomoMooneyFlying's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Checking the pilot guide, the OAT is used in the %HP calculations. I will see if I can adjust it enough in the software to make it accurate. -
Multiple OAT's and GPS antennas
MoonFlyer68 replied to TuomoMooneyFlying's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I guess you're right. I was thinking that the JPI used that temperature readings as part of some calculations like the AV-30 does. But now that you mention it, I think the JPI just displays the temperature but doesn't really need it for any other functions. -

They did the same thing with my JPI probe. One of these days I will rip it out and move it to the wing where the probe for my AV-30 is. -
DIGITAL AIs, Garmin, uAvionix, RC Allen... again
MoonFlyer68 replied to DCarlton's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I have dual AV-30'S in my plane now and absolutely love them. As so many others have noted, the DG is an issue but the company seems hopeful the magnetomiter will get signed of by the FAA soon. Until then, I have it interfaced with my WAAS GPS and it is great. Of course when installed with a temperature probe you can also get TAS as well as DA. If you haven't tried it yet, they have a small simulator that can run on windows or Mac. If you do install it, I highly recommend running the wires that connect to the computer if they update the software. Makes life much easier. -
Century IIb not following new IFD 440 in NAV mode
MoonFlyer68 replied to Bartman's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Just to do a follow-up on the issues I was having with NAV mode after the switch to IFD-440, I did find the problem. I am still not exactly sure what caused it, but the autopilot controller itself got out of calibration. I had found the calibration procedures in the manual and it took me forever to find a jewelers screwdriver that actually fit into the hole and was able to reach the adjustment screw. I was finally able to null out any movement in the controls when the needle was centered and then went up on a test flight. Now she tracks the course down the middle in both NAV and APP modes.
