  1. I just finished my PPL 2 months ago. About a year to the day, I convinced my wife to be on board for me doing this life long dream of getting my pilots license. First thing I did was researched the Transport Canada PPL written exam. Honestly, the first time I attempted to even understand anything in it, it was all backwards, and gibberish. I enrolled in a 40 hour ground school. 2 nights a week and Saturday’s for a month. Wasn’t the greatest, but things started to make sense. Started flying after that. Took 8 months, but completed the hours, and passed the check ride. Studied like crazy for 2 weeks before attempting the written. The flight school made me take 7 practice exams, and had to get 80+ on all of them before writing. Practice tests were overkill. But, really made me review my study habits, and reread everything. I’m more prepared as a pilot than I thought I’d be because of it. Long story- Flying helps solidify what you’re learning from the book. But, you’ll need to focus on passing the check ride and the written separately when it comes time.
  2. This will be on my list of things to try next flight.... 74F here, and compared to a C172, I found it elevator heavy as well. But, would still rather fly elevator heavy than a 3-toed sloth of a Cessna
  3. My old stomping grounds! Sort of. My Dad was a Sr Facilities Engineer for ARCO in the late 1970’s I lived just off Sand Lake as a kid. That’s where I originally got the flying bug, in my Fathers 182
  4. His Sister in Law put up the GoFundMe page. I've only known Jon for maybe 6 months. But, he helped me through looking for a plane, what to look for, hangar, a small oil gauge leak, the fuel servo, discussion on eventual panel upgrades.... It's just a minor item for me to post about it. He's a knowledgeable Mooney guy (I don't remember the last time I walked into his hangar and didn't see a Mooney there for Annual), and seems to be the "go to" guy for these aircraft around my parts. I've been too close to tragedy over the past year (Humboldt Bus Crash was on highways I used to travel as an Athletic Therapist in a previous career). I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford to fly, own my own plane, live a comfortable lifestyle, and not "overly" worry about money. Donating a little to help someone in need has been something my wife and I have both agreed we need to do more of, because of how fortunate we are (she refuses to read the article, because she knows she'll cry for days about it).
  5. Hey Guys, Normally, I wouldn't post anything like this, but hit a little too close to home this time. Jon Fromm is my AME. I called him on Monday(my birthday) to see if he was able to put my log books back in my aircraft, after completing a Fuel Sender Overhaul. He didn't answer, and called back a few minutes later. Conversation was: "Hi Jon" "Hi Chris. How are you?" "I'm doing great! How are you?" "Not worth a $hit." "What's wrong? You sick" "No. My wife died yesterday from a brain aneurysm she had on Thursday." After some apologies and "sorry for your loss", he said he'd have my log book back by the next day. Told him to forget about it, and there's more important things to worry about. When I asked him if there was anything I could do, he told me "Yes. Forget about it and have a Happy Birthday." Well, I can't forget about it. He's helped me out with finding a hangar, fixing minor sqwaks on the aircraft. Getting me in the air, and full of incredible information. Most of the time for free. So, this is my pay it forward. I've already donated, and thought I"d post the Newspaper artucle and GoFundMe for him and his family: https://www.reddeeradvocate.com/news/gofundme-account-set-up-for-large-springbrook-family/?fbclid=IwAR0OmQ6aQ5tVI501DIUULYj7-ENemLEfMwMPuVPLp7ZpvLj0gmpSblWIdyg I never met his wife. But, she ended up being an organ donor, and helping save the lives of at least 3 other individuals through her selfless wishes. If you can give, Great! If not, please remember that life is too short, you never know what could happen, and cherish every day. Safe flying, and clear skies, and tailwinds. - Chris.
  6. Welcome aboard. This is an extremely informative and user friendly site. Feel free to ask anything on here, and be prepared to get a gamete of responses. I acquired an F several months ago and am loving the plane!
  7. Funny you say that. Because the plane is relatively new to me, I wasn’t aware that it had one of those installed already. Unfortunately, it is unserviceable. So, went to plan B for a quick fix:
  8. I recently completed my PPL, and I feel there's a reason why EVERY practice exam, and the actual written exam had at least 2 questions about this. One would always ask about which way you would turn/divert course if passing, overtaking, coming towards another aircraft, and who has the right of way. Other would be about how would you know if you're on a collision course with another object / aircraft. Yes, simple and for the most part (hopefully), information you will use rarely. But, important enough to have these questions drilled into you, so you know to turn right, and when.
  9. Tom, I'll take the SIdewinder, and we can talk shipping, as I'm in Canada
  10. I'm happy to have a AME that's cautious, and works on a lot of Mooney's.... He's slow as F&&K when it comes to getting things done (Fuel Servo has been back from OH for 11 days now... just finishing putting it on today), but he's careful and meticulous. My comment was that it wasn't going 145 kts like it should...
  11. Pure estimates.... But, yeah your right. Strong tailwind?
  12. Our FBO is in the same boat. Keeps saying, "Eventually, we will have wifi to all the hangars!" Considering where my plane is at, is 1 hangar away from being the furthest point away, I"m willing to expedite the process... Especially since there's snow on the ground already, below freezing temps, and it's a 25 minute drive to the airport to turn on an engine heater.
  13. My fuel servo has slowed mine down considerably over the past 3 weeks.... Top speed has been 10-15 ktas, behind a tug, back and forth from the mechanics hangar and mine.
  14. Weight difference Before new paint vs after? as @jackn said, the way the control surfaces were reinstalled would create a lot more drag than paint. I know I've drooled over this paint job in the past few months, but never saw the original paint job before. Questioning how a "smooth" paint vs. a previously "rough" job would cause more drag.
  15. I was just looking at doing something like this, and saw the post. Went to a website, and found the parts. Also had a second idea, and thinking it'll solve the cold cabin issue... Install a Tee on the outlet, and toss a tube through the pilot window. Going to install as is first, and see how much OOMPH there is. I'll PIREP once complete.
  16. Good to know. I’ll probably skip the cellular data iPad then, and just connect it via hotspot on my phone if needed
  17. Not the storage space I"m worried about. It's the online/ flying useage. I'll upload everything when I'm on wifi. But, If I need something in the air, was wondering what the data amount would be.
  18. So, possibly using my cell phone (company plan... don't tell anyone), as a hotspot, and linking an ipad might be better off ? Save some $$$ on the ipad for sure if it's not cellular.
  19. I'm about to pick up an Ipad 9.7" Pro, with cellular data capability. Because I don't live in the US, Cell plans aren't exactly the cheapest item out there. So, in order to try and scrounge a few $$$, just wondering if anyone has the average data amount, FF would use on say, an hourly basis? Or, does anyone else have any other ideas on this?
  20. Depending on how bad the interior is, that might be first. This plane had less than 10 hours in it in the past 15 years. Paint is a 6/10, interior was much lower. Seats and carpet were redone. Seat pans were cracked and had to be repaired. Wish timing was in my side, and saw a few interior seats on here for sale at the same time. Might have saved me a couple grand just to scrap and swap. Aside from that, panel is next. I am in the process of vinyl wrapping the wing tips and side stripes for a color change. It’ll keep me happy for years, while I pay off the rest of this. Haha
  21. Thats why you drink the hard stuff
  22. Being Canadian (as am I)...You understand that we save 60-70% on alcohol, just by crossing the border south.
  23. I’ve heard, that If you really torque on the prop lever, you can get the blades to reverse, and then back your plane into the hangar.
  24. As I look out the window, and see snow falling for potentially the next 2 days.. I think to myself, "I guess it's okay that the plane still doesn't have the overhauled fuel servo installed".
