  1. The first airshow I ever went to, when I was 8, was at Shelby County. I still have the program that I got the pilots of the coca-cola aerobatic flying team to autograph 26 years later. Think that may have been when I fell down the rabbit hole.
  2. Pot calling the kettle black aren't you? I've spent more on my mooney than I ever spent on my RC planes and I have a RC Mooney. But yes, it's a rabbit hole just like the full scale. The only difference is the economies of scale. RC is measured in hundreds of dollars. Full scale is measured in thousands of dollars. And it's a gateway drug to full scale. Start them young and they'll be broke for life. LOL
  3. I had this little RC plane many years ago that would be perfect. I'm searching for a similar or same plane to link you to. Hopefully I can come up with something. Anyway it was a 2 channel plane, Throttle and rudder. It was super light, only a few grams, so it was super slow and flew inside perfectly well(meant to be flown inside). Fixed trim so it always flew the same speed, throttle up->altitude up, not speed up. Super light too, so a crash didn't have enough energy to damage the plane. You're not going to do any stunts with this plane, but it's perfect for kids as you describe. There was also a company that made indoor fliers, parkzone I think. It's been many years since I was really active in RC so I don't know all what's available now. Check nitroplanes.com and towerhobbies.com. They are the big hitters in the hobby sector. Being the holiday, they may even have an ad that will point you straight to what you're looking for.
  4. Used these on motocycles to lube control cables. I wonder it this would work for the cables on the plane? https://www.amazon.com/Motion-Pro-08-0182-Cable-Luber/dp/B0012TYX9W/ref=asc_df_B0012TYX9W/
  5. My SkyBeacon came in on Friday and is sitting on my table waiting on time to get it installed. Would have done it this weekend except the rain didn't stop until late Sunday and unfortuanately I don't have a hangar. May try to take an afternoon this week to go intall it so I can work with my A&P. Pirep to follow.
  6. Your explanation reminds me of the rockwell retro encabulator. I've been working on replacing internal combustion on my plane with the modial interaction of magneto reluctance and capactive redactance. Seem much like a much more efficent method of flying since we aleady have magnetos and there are capactiros in the the good ole SOS box and magnetos. Link for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXJKdh1KZ0w On a more serious note, did I miss the note that the brakes finally released? I was thinking the last post I saw said you went by with it on jacks and the wheels were still locked up. What did the mechanic do to get them to release? Did he manipulate brake valve to get it to happen?
  7. One thing everyone seems to be missing, or maybe I missed it if it was, is Flight Following is a two way street. Sure in many cases it may not help you but it tells ATC what you are doing so they can offer options to help traffic flow through their area even if those options are not for you. ATC works best when they know what everyone is doing. So if nothing else, it's a courtesy to ATC to take flight following.
  8. If I'm number 3, I probably won't make it. Just static on the comm side no matter what I do. Won't transmit either. (Tested with my handheld right next to the radio wondering if it was an antenna problem or something. Nav seem to recieve fine. I can hear the ident but I haven't been flying to see if it will swing the needle.
  9. What's the story on the KX170B's? Mine just crapped out and I'm trying to narrow down if it's something in the plane or something in the radio.
  10. That last comment makes me think, what about a brake line that got out of place and kinked/pinched in the landing gear during extension? Shot in the dark, but I'm trying to come up with something that could happen between gear up and gear down.
  11. I was always concerned about a spinning wheel catching a brake line or gear wiring that decided to flex the wrong way and getting caught by a spinning wheel. If memory serves correctly, the F-18 landing gear applies the brakes to stop the wheel as part of gear retract sequence.
  12. I don't disagree, but wouldn't brakes locking up in flight have similar odds? I feel like that is just as unlikely. If I'm seeing above and remembering right, the parking brake is just a valve. It will not apply brakes, only hold what has been applied. For the parking brake theory to hold, at some point he would have had to depress the brakes AFTER he actuated the valve. Correct?
  13. Maybe this is a silly question, are you sure it was the brakes that locked up and not the wheel bearings?
  14. That would probably be it. Didn't realize it was an annual thing. Thanks!
  15. Ads have now reappeared for me also. I tried logging out and back in, but they are still displaying. And it's not a duplicate Don issue this time *edit* when I posted this, My avatar now says I'm a basic member and not a supporter?
  16. Recently there was an ATC seminar here in Greenville where we had controllers from our local airport towers, local Class C approach control, and the Charlotte class B there so we can all talk and ask questions of ATC. I was surprised to hear that they currently have no way to see any ADS-B infomraiton on their screens, even the Bravo guys. We asked about when they would get this capabiity, and they said there had been no mention of it coming or dates given on when they would get ADS-B target info for their use. I was a bit disappointed to hear that. I know all of this is big upgrades and takes a lot of time and money. And for ATC to use it, the fleet has to use it first so I get that there would be a lag behind 2020 before they get it. But I would have expected the dates to be closer behind our 2020 mandate than, "we haven't even heard about it."
  17. The back row of the ramp at my home aiport has the grave yard. A whole row of unflown planes including a beech muskateer, beech baron, a twin comanche, and an assortment or cessnas and cherokees. Most have flat tires and even a few of them have been sitting so long they have sank into the asphalt. It's sad. I walked that row last weekend to see what exactly was out there. Actually I was hoping to see one that had decent electronics that I coud track down the owner and hopefully buy cheap. I'm in bad need of a GPS. Anyway, the twin comanche is the one in the best shape, and it had a 530! So I start looking. The plane flew around the world back in 2002. A couple of pilots based in NJ bought her and upgraded her specifically for the flight. Such a cool history and now she is sitting; rotting away. I've sent a few e-mail and started pulling paperwork to try to track down the owner. Hoping, if nothing else, to hear more about their trip around the world. She has been painted since she flew around the world so I'm pretty sure it was a different owner that parked her in greenville. Here is a link to the site where they tell about going around the world with her. http://www.flightaroundtheworld.com/
  18. I'll try to make it down from SC. I used to go fishing with my dad in Eufaula, but haven't been since I was a kid. Cullman and Eufaula are about the same distance from Greenville.
  19. There is no T51 in the list. Fill it out for us? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tHcpix8WYTFXo3nimcdXYTU4s0uKHXgikNXiG1tddoc/edit#gid=0
  20. Trying to keep up. Here is the link. I made the link editable for a while so if you see info that is not correct or missing, please feel free to fill it in. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tHcpix8WYTFXo3nimcdXYTU4s0uKHXgikNXiG1tddoc/edit?usp=sharing Hey @Jim Peace, can you fill in the blanks on your long list? Missing a lot of information.

  22. The last section about the skySensor not getting certification really disappointed me. I wanted so badly to have a matched pair with ADS-B in and out. Are there any provisions or ways to install experimental equipment on a certified plane? I'm thinking maybe NORSEE (non required safety enhancing equipment)? I'm thinking the problem with the NORSEE approach is the nav light IS required equipment.
  23. November 15, 2018 skyBeacon STC Update This is a jam-packed newsletter full of BIG NEWS. Grab a cup of coffee, here is what's in store: skyBeacon STC data package accepted by FAA with 272 aircraft AML Shipping by the end of November How to get skyBeacon installed Wingtip fairing adapters tailBeacon update Starboard options - skyLight and skySensor STC Data Submitted to FAA Its been just over 2 months since we announced skyBeacon received its 5 TSOs. At the time, we thought the STC was just a couple of weeks away... We keep on learning. Our initial STC flight turned up an issue we hadn't previously discovered. It's resolved now, but it resulted in a TSO minor modification, subsequent test flights, and finally another STC flight. Despite rumors or speculation to the contrary, the delay has been of our own making, and has nothing to do with our dispute with a competitor. The data package has been accepted by the FAA and we are now awaiting signatures. Check out the STC flight path on the right. During that two month period, we've received thousands of calls, emails, and social media posted questions asking for status. Also during that period, FAA relaunched its $500 rebate program - which just ratcheted up the intensity of the inquiries. Thank you for your patience. We are confident it will be worth the wait. The wait is nearly over. We will begin to ship the TSO/STC product to our customers and trusted resellers as soon as we receive the final signatures from the FAA by the end of November. Go reserve your $500 rebate slot with confidence and order your skyBeacon today! How do I Install skyBeacon? What's the AML? Will it fit on my.......? Close behind the mass of questions regarding our shipping dates, installation and fitment questions are a very close second. Which aircraft are covered by the STC? Surprise! The STC will include an extensive Approved Model List (AML), containing 272 aircraft models from Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, American Champion, Maule, Boeing, Swift, Mooney, Aviat, and others. This is the single largest AML for any UAT ADS-B solution. The full AML can be accessed here. What if my aircraft is not on the AML? Good news! Under FAA Memo titled "Installation Approval for ADS-B OUT Systems," the FAA explains that after an STC is achieved for ADS-B OUT equipment, additional installations can be accomplished with an A&P with Inspection Authorization (IA) so long as the installation does not require airframe modification. This process requires completion of a form called FAA Form 337 MAJOR REPAIR AND ALTERATION. We are providing guidance with a sample skyBeacon Form 337 here and will post on our website once we begin shipping to make the process easier. We have more info on this on our FAQ on the skyBeacon product page. Also see the sidebar from an article from AEA in Avionics Magazine. OK, but WILL IT FIT ON MY AIRPLANE? This is the generally the hardest question to answer, since we don't have the details of every aircraft wingtip shape out there, and we don't know if your aircraft has been modified with upgraded wingtips, etc. We need your help with this one. We have provided a to-scale mounting template. Print it out and check for yourself, then please let us know if it works for you, so we can answer the question for the next pilot. We do have some additional adapters to make skyBeacon more applicable to more aircraft with our wingtip fairing adapters. See more on this in the next section below. Finally, take a photo, post on social media, and tag it with #beaconinstalls and #screwadsbonyourwing to help us show off! Watch the 30 second installation video above. Wingtip Fairing Adapters In order to make skyBeacon more accessible to more aircraft - we've developed two wingtip fairing adapters. These adapters aren't quite ready to ship just yet, but will be available shortly for only $100 each. We expect to be shipping these by the end of the year. What about tailBeacon??? One thing we've learned from all of your questions, is that tailBeacon is going to be very popular. One reason for this is that there is some uncertainly of whether skyBeacon will fit your wingtip, and a second reason is because you may be looking for symmetry with a matching right-side light. We've tried to address both items in this newsletter. With the AML and fairing adapters, we have tried to address the fitment questions. See the next section for some news on our skyLight matching right side light. tailBeacon IS coming, but has been delayed due to the delays for skyBeacon. We've communicated previously that tailBeacon is a spin-off of the skyBeacon certification - so necessarily we needed to complete the STC first. tailBeacon is the next priority. We still expect to achieve the tailBeacon TSO by the end of the year, but the STC will likely push into early Q1 of 2019. The STC can present some interesting challenges due to its installation on a control surface. We will get there, but if you are anxious about reserving your $500 rebate while the FAA funding still lasts - your best bet is to go with skyBeacon. Finally, what about my starboard side options? I want a matching light! We hear you. We've felt it most important to focus on the products that help you meet your mandate deadline, and we will be following up with starboard side options. For the experimental/LSA aircraft owners - we already offer skySensor - a starboard side ADS-B IN receiver and position/strobe light. Currently these are available online and through our resellers. We will not be certifying skySensor, but we will be producing a certified starboard side matching light called skyLight in Q1. We will be offering bundle pricing, but will extend the discount to customers who have already purchased skyBeacon. Reserve your rebate, get skyBeacon installed - don't wait for skyLight - we'll get it taken care of for you.
  24. Well....I don't know about mooneymite, but I only paid $20 to register my car. But I did have to pay a $500 tax BEFORE was allowed to register my car.
  25. Not a bad start! Here is what I have so far. I'll get it pulled into Google Maps when all the blanks get filled in. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tHcpix8WYTFXo3nimcdXYTU4s0uKHXgikNXiG1tddoc/edit?usp=sharing
