Generation and capacity are two very different things. Since coal and nuclear account for almost all of the continuous generation, they do more with less. The intermittent sources alternate between wind and solar, and natural gas, which skews the results.

To revive an old thread... My favorite is either 'birdman' jumping off the rock, or the guy who lights his ass on fire.

Yes, and No. Great fun, and I am not so stupid as to leave evidence. Truth is, these things exist in many locations., i.e. Oman, Camp Guernsey, ...

Controller brings C208 down safety
AH-1 Cobra Pilot replied to kerry's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Is nobody else skeptical of that? I watched that on the news last night while thinking the same thing as when I saw the news report of Jesse Smollett first talking about his supposed attack, or the clown bailing out of his airplane. -

So, do these people only drive 10 mph to keep from squishing bugs on their windshields? -

No. The link was included with a synopsis in a daily email I receive. https://mailview.bulletinmedia.com/mailview.aspx -
Another Example of EV BS

I am not against new technology. I object to: 1. Over-hyped ejaculations and outright lies that the EV crowd continuously put forth. 2. Government subsides of favored companies and technologies. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/02/climate/biden-electric-car-batteries.html https://www.sfchronicle.com/business/article/Stellantis-pours-billions-more-into-Canada-17142190.php 3. Government interference in manufacturing according to political agendas. 4. The above items lead to more investment in companies that will never payoff and less investment in better technology that is not in the favored class. 5. Special treatment in regulations for favored companies/industries. These all lead to less innovation in the long run and poorer economic results for us all. -
Another Example of EV BS
AH-1 Cobra Pilot replied to AH-1 Cobra Pilot's topic in General Mooney Talk
Listening might also be a challenge. "17 minutes, 65% remaining." None of the numbers add up, and there are BIG differences between the article and the video. Plus, "10 minutes reserve required if you stay in the pattern."? Is that rule coming to America? I suppose other rules may be changed as well. Can you log time if the propeller is not turning? It will make sense to change some rules; what is infuriating is how easily some are/will be changed when it it so difficult to change others for the not-so-politically-popular innovations, i.e. electronic mags. It is not the 'I have something against EVs', it is this type of hype that is so ridiculous, and will be harmful to some suckers. As I have said before in other threads, electric airplanes are probably 40 years out, and anyone investing will not see a recoup for decades, or until the Zero Point Module is invented... -
https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/general-aviation/2022-04-28/pipistrel-seeking-faa-nod-electric-velis-trainer Presuming the author meant kW-hr for the battery... Let's see...at full power, the battery will only last 20 minutes, or if, as the article says, you can fly for one hour with reserves, you would have to take off and fly at 22% power with your 80hp engine. Seriously? Anyone want to try a takeoff using 18hp in this plane? Does anyone here fly at 22% power in his/her Mooney? Apparently, too many people cannot do the Math, blindly believe the BS they are fed, and/or are simply zealots for this electrification nonsense.

Here is a possible electric aircraft: https://www.fox21online.com/2022/04/18/poplar-pilot-developing-skypak-to-take-off-as-personal-propeller-driven-jetpack/ It reminds me of this:

No, I bought a Mooney to, mostly, save time.
-
Allow me to try again to get through: You do not buy a Tesla or a BMW to save money.
-
If you use 6% as the average stock market return, the difference between your fuel costs would mean that the Tesla should cost no more than $15,425 more than the Miata. I am guessing a new Tesla is more likely $25,000 more than the new Miata. Bottom line: You do not buy a Tesla to save money.
-
What was the purchase price of each? That will have a large influence on the ownership costs.

Normal Procedure for Upgrading?
AH-1 Cobra Pilot replied to Parttime_Pilot_Blake's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
The last major upgrade I had was installing a GNX-375 and G-5. It took waaay longer than originally quoted, (but it was the shop's first GNX-375), or about 14 weeks. I paid for everything after completion with a credit card. -
ROTFLMAO!! "High speed lane" What were they doing? 30? One of my favorite 'future predictions' from 1900 was that by 2000, "The deliveryman will be a thing of the past. Everything will be delivered to your home via pneumatic tube."

My favorite example of the stupidity of changing terms was in a VT squadron. Apparently, the Navy hired a consultant to "improve" our training. The big, memorable improvement she made was to get rid of the awful, mean, degrading term we used when a 'student' failed a flight, "Down". She insisted we change that to the more nuanced, nicer, less derogatory, and more correct term, "Signal of Difficulty". As with everything in the military, terms get shortened to acronyms. So would you rather be "Downed", or be "Sodded"?

I would guess they are including hybrids in the EV category. I doubt (m)any hybrids are charged anywhere but home, and very few at home. The proper question to ask is, Who gains what by putting out BS numbers?
-
While doing some other research, I came across these quotes, both funny for different reasons: "John Heywood, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, predicts that in 2050, 60 percent of light-duty vehicles will still have combustion engines, often working with electric motors in hybrid systems and largely equipped with a turbocharger. Vehicles powered purely by batteries, he estimates, will make up 15 percent of sales." 100 - 60 - 15 = 25. How will the other 25% of light-duty vehicles be powered? "Dr. Heywood, who has pondered whether he would best serve his students by teaching combustion or electrochemistry, addresses the challenge of gasoline’s future from a somewhat different direction: the practical limitations of battery electric cars. “Holding a gas nozzle, you can transfer 10 megawatts of energy in five minutes,” he said, explaining today’s refueling reality. To recharge a Tesla electric at that rate today, he said, would require “a cable you couldn’t hold.” " MW is a measure of power, not energy. Landing Light Switch on 1979 M20J
AH-1 Cobra Pilot replied to robert38606's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I have had similar problems with a switch or two. The switch would not stay ON, unless held in place. If that is what yours are doing, all they need is to fix the pin that serves as a pivot point. As they wear, the pins slide out to the side, and the switch has too much play, so that it will not remain latched in the ON position. The pins are metal, 1mm or so in diameter and 2-3mm long. (Those measurements are only from memory and VERY approximate.) If you can find the pin, it can be put back into position, although it may still work its way out. I bought replacements on Amazon, (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N64BN8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). (Funny, they were about half as much when I ordered them. Inflation.) Unfortunately, I do not remember if they fit perfectly as is, or needed some scraping with an razor blade. Mine have not been a problem since. -
Overhead vent upgrade project
AH-1 Cobra Pilot replied to Utah20Gflyer's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I would be comfortable selling you nylon ones. I can do white, black, red, blue, and maybe even a few other colors. The one I pictured earlier in a clear nylon would be more expensive, but it is also the best material. Any of these could also have carbon-fiber reinforcement in the base, and again, that adds to the cost. I am experimenting with glass and CF-filled ABS, which can be easily painted, but is not ready for 'prime-time' just yet. They will also be much less expensive than the nylon ones.
