AeroHoff would end up being close to $500 as well. He comes up from oceanside or something and bills by the hour. with a minimum. If you could get 3 or 4 mooneys together he can do them all for the same price. I have had him at SNA 3 times and nobody ever takes me up on my offer to get a group together. Takes him 30 minutes to do mine and I get a $400 bill due to drive time and mins.

Zeftronics vs. Plane Power Voltage Regulators
TheTurtle replied to Marauder's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
my zef vr went bad in about 3 months. Went back and forth pointing fingers at plane power alternator. Finally just got a plane power vr and havent had any issues since. And still havent gotten a refund from zeftronics though they have the bad VR. I would never do business with zeftronics again. -
i dont know about the B&C but the skytec is awesome. spins so much faster than the stock one.

Bonanza ditching in the Pacific
TheTurtle replied to tigers2007's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
only thing odd to me was lost power at 3000agl and only had 45seconds before hitting the water. did he point the nose straight down or do bo's really glide like shit? Reminds me that I should go out and check the sink rate at best glide. He said wind from west which is pretty standard out here. so if he was pointing back towards shore when the engine quit and with 10:1 glide he should have gotten about 5 miles. How far offshore at 3000 AGL was he? I get panicy just going offshore of Camp Pendelton enough to avoid the restricted area. -

Yea sucks. He was my CFI/CFII as well. we got close over the years and it all went south quickly for him. Funeral next week. Go to the doctor people!! (says the guy who never goes to the doctor) Ive had the plane for about 3 years. maybe 4. In the last year she has hinted that at some point on a perfect day when the stars align and hell has frozen over shell do a 15 minute hop over to the airport near her family. That hasnt happened yet. The other issue is she has tried to get some other people to go as well so she would have a real reason to fly but none of her friends are in to it either. So even if I get rid of the mooney and just have 2 seats and one day when those stars align we'll be ok since nobody else wants to go anyway... Ive been kicking this around for a few months now because im a keeper. I never get rid of stuff once I buy it. I just keep stacking up more toys this one just isnt bringing me the joy it should anymore. I threw it on barnstormers with a free 100 character ad to see if there are any bites at my dump it price of 40k.

Been doing some soul searching and think it's time to let the mooney go. Its a traveling bird and since my wife wont fly its pretty hard to justify to myself. I almost never have 3 people including me and even rarer to have 4. The whole certification thing is really breaking my balls too. I got an offer to go in with a buddy of mine on some experimental and I think it fits my style, budget and mission better. I like working on my own stuff and I dont need to pay some grumpy old man to babysit me and sign a book. My engine is at TBO and although its 76-78 on comps and gets flown regularly I know that is going to hit the price hard. Also no GPS panel. So I'm not sure if I should just dump it for what I can get or since the tiedown and insurance isnt what kills me just keep it forever and in another 400hours or so rebuild the engine. And plod along with 1960s avionics because theres no way I'm paying somebody to install glass on top of the overpriced certified gear. Tough call, I was thinking this would be my forever plane and you can't beat the mooney community. the wife and I with another couple going places was what I had in my head when I bought it. But it's actually me and a buddy on a 15minute flight to get gas just to say we went flying. And that buddy just died of cancer so now its me doing laps in the pattern to keep the oil moving every week. I dont really need 4 seats 98% of the time. But that few times I needed them it was sure nice having them.

I know. I dont care. This S^$%t is a ripoff. It's killing GA. I'm barely hanging on and wondering every day if it's worth it. Might put the old girl up for sale while people are selling E's for 70k and get something experimental.

its cool. we're getting there. But it its still $3000 overpriced.

and thats why unless you have a jeep youdont disable the neutral safety switch. In my jeep I more than once pulled myself out of a waterhole with the starter so I didnt get my feet wet when getting out to attach the winch.

I spin the handle until I feel it click. I think thats the light switch clicking or maybe the thumblock but I like to think Im feeling some notch attaching to the gear keeping it down. The click is the only thing that holds the gear down

Is there any documentation on rechargeables? I know if I put a couple AAs in a flash light and throw it in a drawer in a year or 2 Ill probably still get some light. If I turn off my phone and throw it in a closet for a year or 2 im pretty sure it will be dead. For a light I use a lot Im ok with rechargeable but for the family light in case of emergency I stick with regular batteries. Im not sure this is still valid though.

Remove sender with fuel in tank?
TheTurtle replied to MikeOH's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
you just have to do it really fast so you dont spill any. -
Objectively speaking maglights are garbage flashlights. They are tough as far as the steel shell goes. Make a good night stick. But as far as a flash light they suck. The beam has the "maglight" glob in the center. They arent very bright. The bulbs poof when you drop them. The lens technology is 50 years old and wasnt anything special back then. The spin to adjust just makes the beam wonky. Don't get me wrong. I have a couple. But there are really way better flashlights out there for the same price. Mag lights just have that nostalgia from my boy scout days.

I had my gxr deep into the triple digits many times. over 170 across the I90 bridge in seattle was interesting. I was young and really dumb. Its probably good I didnt have a PPL then because I would be a smoking hole or have some really awesome stories.. I blast my ducati from the stop light and split lanes if traffic is slow now but I haven't even wheelied it. I'm scared of pain now. Pain and higher insurance rates...

I did it using Bruce's PDF. It works ok. If I was to do it again I would just use fiberglass instead of the tape/epoxy method. I'm seeing it recrack.

Sealing cowl/avionics bay covers against water?
TheTurtle replied to justincarter's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
i bought the strip caulk but it looks like a mess. I take my IP cover off fairly regularly and the strip caulk looks gooey especially in the high heat and sun here. I just went to los depotos and got some double hump weather stripping. similar to this. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-5-16-in-x-1-4-in-x-17-ft-White-D-Center-EPDM-Medium-Gap-Weatherseal-Tape-V25WA/100017014 seals tight and there is no goo. It's been on for about 2 years now with no issues. -

my guy was 250. Got it to .07 (.7)?? Prop was overhauled about 10 hours ago and my IA said to get it balanced after it "sets". It was originally just under the high limit. He had a machine like a seismic thing you see in the movies with a pen that bounces around on a sheet marking the ips. After he was done he gave me the sheet to put in the prop log. He just put one weight on my prop hub. took him an hour max. that includes removing the spinner and resafety wiring the hub.
