2023 MAPA Safety Foundation PPP locations & dates
PeteMc replied to Stetson20's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
@Jerry 5TJ Any word on the 2024 schedule yet?!?! I vote for KSFF in May or Oct. Should be easy to coordinate PAR (and ASR) approaches at KSKA!! -
At what Airport or more importantly, what Altitude & DA? And on the Full Rich on landing, I had heard that was really in the POH for the potential Go Around.
-
I meant excessive drop. That's why I thought you were doing the Mag check while still leaned.
-
Gad, DO NOT do anything yet! Excessive leaning is a great thing to do on the ground to stop plugs from fouling. But checking the Mags while you're running lean will give you EXACTLY what you saw. Next time run up the engine close to your normal RPMs and go Full Rich, set your RPM and do the Mag Check. If it is still off, check with your mechanic. But odds are when you're rich you'll get a normal Mag check. If you do get a normal Mag check, then start to get a feel for what your engine does when you have leaned for ground ops. Then you'll know what's normal for your engine.

Am I using the correct equipment suffix code?
PeteMc replied to Jim Peace's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
And FF shouldn't be offering much assistance. How to do it and where to do it are about it. What goes info goes in needs to come from your Avionics guy (and they don't much like to do it either ). FF has no clue what you have in your plane, so if you say you think you have A B C, they should only tell you were to find the place to put A B C and nothing more. -
For the electronics.... If you haven't, download the Garmin Aviation Trainers to practice with the GTN750 (avai. for iPad or PC). Also watch a lot of the videos available from Garmin as well as a number of other sources for all of your new avionics. Next, when it comes time to fly, have a CFI **That Knows Your Equipment** with you. They're going to be more comfortable about talking to you as well as looking out the window. There is NO question that your head will be buried inside the plane with a lot of "...now how do you do that again..." even if you did do a lot of studying before hand. After a flight or two with the CFI and you're a little more comfortable, then consider flying with another pilot. You're still going to have your head buried inside for a while.

Am I using the correct equipment suffix code?
PeteMc replied to Jim Peace's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
So in the Other I have: Code: A20DA1 NAV: SBAS PER: A SUR: 282B 260B Now I have to go do some research to figure out why we put those in. -
Am I using the correct equipment suffix code?
PeteMc replied to Jim Peace's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Okay... So are you saying my codes are correct or not? I looked at my "ForeFlight" info and I don't see a Field 18... So I guess I need to do more research on this, but I'm still unclear if I entered it correctly (per the installer & Gamin) or if I just added it by mistake. -

Curious if you sure about those codes? (Source?) Granted, I do not have the same gear as Jim and I got into this when I first got my panel upgrade, but have pretty much forgotten everything my Avionics guy and Garmin told me when I was figuring out what to plug in. But for my Aspen, GTN, GTX345D (also GNC355) they had me put in: FAA: G ICAO: B G R S Z (Y = 8.33KHz Channel Spacing which is possible, but not standard on the GTN) Surveillance: B2 E U2 (C = Basic A & C only) PBN: B2 C2 D2 O2 S2 (S1 = No Baro, possible if the Baro input was not connected) -
Not sure metal type zip tie...what is it?
PeteMc replied to Mark89114's topic in General Mooney Talk
Okay, I just have to follow up on this. By no means am I an Aircraft Mechanic, but there are various types of Zip-Ties made out of all sorts of materials to withstand all sorts of chemical or natural exposure. And Zip-Ties can be cranked down to squeeze the bejesus out of anything or just sinched down slightly to hold something in place. So my curiosity has gotten the better of me to find out why you think these great attachment/binding devices shouldn't be used on aircraft? Some of the authentically rebuilt aircraft I've seen have all sorts of attaching devices that are just... well... OLD tech that's only saving grace is that they are historic and not necessarily safe. -
Granted they're rare, but I think they happen more to the West of you in some of the bigger testing areas. I see the NOTAMs for possible outages when I'm looking at possible flight in the SW. My beef is not with the MON system, I see the need for a second type of tech when we're poking holes in the clouds. Just wish some of the Regs would catch up with the current technology. And I also get how SOME Regs shouldn't be changed on a whim and need through review. But saying it's okay to compare your VOR to a GPS isn't one of them. If it's off it's going to be way off. If it's off a little, so what, they allowed a pretty big error factor when you could compare to a second VOR where both could be off at the max error in the same direction and you think you're spot on.
-
Yea, let's see how much you like that when the miliary or some industry is testing something and you have no GPS coverage in the area you're flying.

Continental_Tips_on_Engine_Care - Anyone Have A Copy?
PeteMc replied to PeteMc's topic in Engine Monitor Discussion
MUCH Better!!! Thanks! Haven't read it in a while and my crappy scan was getting irritating to read. -
I've had an issue with the VOR check since I upgraded and now only have one VOR. Not every Airport has a check point and it can be done in flight, but with GPS a lot of flying is Direct or not exactly where you need to be to have a known ground fix - or be exactly over it. I'd love for the FAA to simply modify the Regs to allow for a comparison to a GPS with some know variable like is down with the VORs. Either that, or just make it a ground check when the other equip. is tested for IFR.

Ummm.... Did you miss that this was a pilots group?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? OF COURSE it's going to get drawn out as far as possible! And then some !!!
-
Actually... I never said I didn't get ABO , it's just easier to get it at the FBO and I never had a place to keep an O2 bottle. (That may change in the near future.) My position on this is that there is technically is no longer a difference when it leaves the plant since everything is created the same and shipped as Liquid O2. But I realize I was never clear that you have to know your Vendor/Source! It is quite possible for a welding supplier to have crappy tanks that they really don't clean or check. So you could be getting crappy O2, even though it started off all the same.
-
Excellent! Sounds like the shop that did this Annual knew what they were doing. I recently moved, so I'm a little edgy on what's going to happen next year when my Annual comes around.

Dated 2005....
-
Okay, you peaked my curiosity. Are these dewars pressurized? If so, after the initial release is there a back draw of Air where the moisture then freezes before the interior of the dewar has anywhere close to enough time for the temp to rise to near water freezing level? Or is the moisture exposed to the super cold, so therefore you get "what looks like sand" at the bottom from the newly exposed Air? Same question if they are a vacuum, but the answer would seem more obvious.
-
Yes, not disputing that.... But I have no way of knowing when the "Aviator's" O2 comment was added and and what the 2023 change was. It could have been in the original publication and just never changed. Also surprised for that type of document there is no change sheet. It may be there, but I didn't see it.
-
I see your document was modified in 2023, but it is a crowd sourced document and I do not see a list of edits with dates. So there's no way to tell what was change or when. The original Doc was from 2004 and I suppose it was true that they still created different types of O2 back then. But I do not believe that it is still the case, it's just not worth it for them to make different grades do to the improvements in technology. They just make one and send it out to the distributors. And (can someone confirm??) I think that all O2 is distributed in Liquid Oxygen form and then converted back to Gas at the distributor. ADDED: To clarify my last statement... That means it's ALL the same stuff. Distributed to ALL as Liquid O2, so there's no way to distinguish one kind from the other. (Yes, you can test for moisture, but the vast most distributers it's not an issue.)
-
Well, okay I didn't go into detail nor was I talking about that. My point was they don't "make" different O2 anymore. They may bottle it differently, hence my "different market" comment. But I didn't go into detail, so you got me there. But maybe you should check with your gas supplier.... Do they really do it differently for the different types? Most providers now have the same protocol for filling any bottle, so basically you can use any bottle.
-
Not any more. Maybe for decades. Yes, years ago there was a cost factor in creating the aviation oxygen, but now days it cost them more create, store and manage the various types with the big implications if they give you the wrong one. Now days they just make one O2 and put a different markup on it pending which market it goes to. At least that's what I've been hearing for years at various seminars and seen in articles.

Logbook Pro to Foreflight or Garmin Pilot?
PeteMc replied to Parker_Woodruff's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
HA! You and everyone else here... Go to https://plan.foreflight.com/ You'll need to log in with the same User Name and Password you use for your iPad/iPhone to log into FF. On the left side, Click on Logbook. ALL of your flights should be there. VERY SLIGHT chance they're not all there if the iPad didn't complete a sync. If you do not see any recent flights at the top, go to your iPad/iPhone and make sure you're connected to WiFi (you can use Cellular, but WiFi is much faster to react). Open FF and go into the Logbook and open a couple of different flights, maybe the last couple. (Purpose is to make FF sync the Logbook. You should see the latest flights show up in the Logbook on the Website. If not, click on anything on the left side (e.g. Map) and then go back to the Logbook eventually it should sync. Now look across the top and you'll see Entries - Drafts & Requests - Currency Summary..... and at the end will be EXPORT. Click on Export and then Export again on the next page. In your Download Folder you should find a file like: logbook_2023-07-01_02_12_57.csv Just save that file in a folder. If you have issues, FF *should* be able to recover your data. But for some reason they can't, you can take this file and IMPORT it instead of Exporting and replace what FF has with this backup. Odds are you never will, but it's nice to know you can if you have to.
