Hopefully not thread drift here. If I don't fly for a couple of weeks it takes a few prop rotations to kick off but not battery related. If I fly at least once a week the engine will start up very quickly(couple of compression strokes) Seems very similar to an older car. Go figure, I just thought this was normal.

Take a look here. http://www.batteryminders.com/aircraft-battery-chargers

I was in an Archer partnership prior to owning the J and we looked into a batteryminder for the sealed Concorde. I spoke with a knowledgable representative at Concorde and they recommended a specific batteryminder charger for the type of battery that we had. As I recall the reasoning was that if you overcharge a sealed battery and some of the electrolyte is leaked off it cannot be replaced hence capacity will be reduced. On the flip side a sealed battery can be run down to an almost depleted state but needs recharging quickly or capacity will also be reduced if left in this condition. My J came with a Gill but I will buy a sealed Concorde when this one gives it up. This webinar from EAA pretty much covers it. http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx?v=1496080390001

Looks like good weather for Sunday morning! Try to make it to KSPA if you can. We will be serving breakfast around 9ish. Breakfast is on me for the Mooneyspacer pilot that comes from the furthest out.

Is there something going on with my voltage regulator?
INA201 replied to bradp's topic in General Mooney Talk
I vote ammeter is off based on your experience. Battery would eventually run down if it were accurate. My voltage is usually showing 13.7 to 13.8. Amperage is higher right after startup as it is recharging the battery after starting the engine then goes down as the battery gets back up to full charge. Turn on the pitot heat and your landing light and watch the needle, it should deflect to the right as more amperage is being used while the voltage should stay close to the same as long as the engine is running. -
How much can your Mooney carry with full fuel?
INA201 replied to FloridaPilot's topic in General Mooney Talk
Useful on my 1978J is 980. I can carry 40 gallons of fuel and 740lbs of people and stuff 400+ miles with easily an hour of flight time left. -
This poll may give some insight. I've owned a 1978J for a little over a year and will be finishing IR in a month or two. https://mooneyspace.com/topic/9391-instrument-rating-and-proficiency-poll/#comment-104860

Anyone have ideas for a good borescope camera for IOS? Looks like some folks have bought the one below. Can you articulate the head around with these or should you go a little higher end? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016KUGVJC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was in a 4 owner partnership for 6 years in a Piper Archer. For all practical purposes it was very enjoyable. The hourly flying costs were lower, nice plane, almost no time conflicts, and flew to a lot of beautiful places in the plane. I've now owned a 1978 J as sole owner for over a year. I can say that the intangible benefits far far outweigh the financial benefits of the partnership. The plane in a partnership is just not treated quite as well as if it is your own. We seemed to have a lot of unnecessary mx issues and would often buy new vs overhauled this or that etc.. We spent a lot of time keeping track of billing issues, mx decisions, upgrade decisions, scheduling, and other issues that may crop up. If this were just one of my hobbies rather than my primary hobby then a partnership might be a great long term option. Another phenomenon is that the overall cost to run the Mooney has been just a little over double than the 25% ownership in the Archer while the plane is being maintained with a higher level of scrutiny. My vote is stay single owner. I'm interested to see others thoughts.

In a plane trip the vacation begins during preflight. For a work trip the work starts when you land. In a car your vacation begins when you make it to your destination. For a work trip your work begins when you get into the car. So simple algebra tells us that V=vacation overall experience/work productivity, T=value of your time, S=stress level/relaxation quotient, and O=overall value all on a 1-10 scale. So let's say we are going on a nice 2 day trip to Megaland. Megaland is a 3 hour flight or 8 hour drive and will be awesome! Let's plug the numbers for both. Driving V3+T10+S4=O17 Flying V10+T10+S9.5=O29.5 Overall experience in this particular case is 12.5 units better than driving. Does anyone have the AMU conversion table handy? Kidding aside there is an unquantifiable joy associated with a trip by air even though it can and does cost a large amount of AMUs to participate.

This is not a negative per se but nonetheless typically reduces value a certain amount. http://report.myairplane.com/index.php

Thanks for asking Clarence. The threaded piece on the back broke off. Looked like some kind of epoxy held it on. I was getting my DG replaced when it came off otherwise it was functional. Is there an acceptable repair method?

Any updates on the IFD100 app and 10.2 release? Anyone compare the 650/750 to Avidyne yet? Still on the fence but leaning towards Avidyne.

EAA's Ford Trimotor is currently at KSPA and I'm told will be here for a few days. Pretty cool to see in person. The pic with the car was on Spartanburg Downtown Airport Facebook page and the second one I snapped last night in the hangar. Check first to be sure it's still here and come on by for a look.

Engineer the chute in the new designs as an option and make a "deal" with the FAA to allow useful load to increase the proportional amount. Also, engineer the chute as a retrofit for all Moonies with appropriate UL increases. You would probably recoup 70% of the upgrade costs(retrofit)in equity and the value and marketability of the most economical, all metal, longest range, fastest, and now safest aircraft would be available. Now, make a ten year commitment to the economic viability of the company through committed parts and maintenance support through MSCs possibly as a separate corporation. Get involved with all of us Mooney pilots who would be one of your biggest marketing tools available. E-mail is easy. We should be on your announcements list. You should be on Mooneyspace. We are excited to own Moonies, we love the planes. Some of the best companies I deal with have a newsletter highlighting employees, customers, product development, etc. My 1978J beats the SR20 in every category except for cabin space/comfort and the "chute" hands down. Do a video racing a $500,000 2016 SR20 with an old J and then the new Acclaim with the SR22. No "pilot personality" wants to lose, show them losing. Doesnt the Acclaim do a real world 45 knots faster than the SR22, and the Bonanza? Isnt the Mooney airframe proven to 50 years.....proven! Range? This is the only video I found with a Cirrus ad in the middle lol. You have to visualize the plane soaring past its competitors IMOP. This looks like it's filmed from a phone.

KSPA....new concrete ramp, new terminal building, and slated for 600 foot extension to 5800 in the next year. Activity here has improved marginally in the last few years but not many young pilots. I do think GA decline is evident overall. I'm encouraged by the poll here that showed the ages of Mooney pilots spread pretty evenly.

I think I'll go with the Donaldson. Seems to be reviewed a little better or at least equal to the K&N. Anyone know if I need anything besides just ordering the filter? I'll be really impressed if it adds an 1" to MP. Thanks gang!
-
would it be the consensus to get rid of my foam Bracket filter and go with Donaldson or K&N? Have most folks deBracketted their planes?
-
Ok, I'm just going to throw this video in for you guys and see what happens.

My wife and I have had fun with this thread. I do agree with the do the house first now lol.
