  1. Does anyone know off the top of their head how you can retrieve the serial number from the unit itself?
  2. As far as I know, there are zero companies currently manufacturing the D3000 mags. Kelly has a PMA to make every component including the housing, but technically they can’t produce a brand new mag.
  3. I hope this isn’t the “after” picture
  4. Yep. This is a pretty recent addition to GP, and a nice way to highlight issues that may affect your destination. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/newsroom/press-release/aviation/garmin-pilot-app-adds-new-terminal-environment-notam-alerts-and-graphical-runway-closures/
  5. I know that I'm in the minority on MS in this regard, but I think that finding/buying a good airplane is hard, and the idea of selling a great plane to get an unknown one with an additional feature is really unattractive to me. I'd argue that adding FIKI provides as much utility as many similarly-priced avionics upgrades.
  6. It’s the merch section of mooney.com
  7. Yeah, that was what I guessed from their brochures, since the K was in the FIKI brochure but the J was only in the non-FIKI list. I presume there’s no technical reason it couldn’t be done, but more likely a limited market?
  8. The K has only one battery too iirc - the second battery was added for the long bodies.
  9. I believe you can buy a FIKI install, which is about $10k more than the non-FIKI setup. ETA: They list the K model but not the J model in the FIKI brochure, so I dunno. https://www.cav-systems.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/TKS-Mooney-M20-FIKI-Specification-2019-2.pdf

  11. I’m not sure what GAMI’s long term plan is, but there’s nothing stopping them from licensing G100UL to any number of different manufacturers who can compete on price and service.
  12. A question about regulatory requirements for logging flight time can be a teachable moment - reinforcing the need to check the regs, and getting the student in the habit of staying up to date on changes. Imo it's perfectly acceptable for the instructor and the student to review the regs together, and potentially review interpretation letters as needed to cover specific use cases. I have a pretty decent understanding of the regs, but far from perfect, and my standard answer to any non-trivial reg question is "let's get the book."
  13. I’ve been off on a spelunking expedition in Google since I saw your post. I haven’t followed European approvals for G100UL (which is the only UL avgas I’ve been really excited about ever), but it’s an interesting question. Apparently the secret sauce for GAMI (aromatics) is a bit controversial in Europe, though maybe less so than TEL.. Anyway, here’s a couple of random interesting links fwiw .. https://www.iaopa.eu/contentServlet/iaopa-europe-enews-august-2021---special-edition (IAOPA update on UL fuels) https://www.hjelmco.com/upl/files/41143.pdf (business school paper with a 2010 date - apparently it’s been updated)
  14. I think it’s @tmo
  15. It's very common to see a 750, an audio panel, and an AP control head in the radio stack - this is the setup I have in my J. But I think even if you remove the audio panel and the AP (and even if you relocate the annunciator panel), there won't be enough room to do two 750s stacked vertically. Every dual-GTN install I've seen in the center stack is a 750 and a 650.
  16. I had heard that there was a noticeable difference in screen resolution, but I honestly can't tell the difference. It doesn't seem like they're taking advantage of the extra pixels. The one big functional difference is that the Xi has Smart Glide. Which I understand is only possible with the faster processor.
  17. Definitely the right group, although I think Palmer is like an honorary member. He's pretty new to aviation and they were doing their thing before he had his Kitfox.
  18. Not sure of you were replying to me or to the OP... I have a 750 in the Mooney and a 750xi in the Piper, and despite my concerns about bouncing between the two, it was pretty much a non-event. The only thing I ever do wrong is try to hit the wrong spot for the home button
  19. Aside from the new location of the home button, they seem identical to me. I know that there are some improvements in the guts of the thing, but not much obvious in the user interface.
  20. Yeah Palmer does that too..
  21. Which, as 201er mentioned, is basically “the Icon effect.”
  22. I follow Trent Palmer too, and I like his channel for the most part. My biggest fear tbh is that he’s talking to a non-pilot audience. This type of video runs some risk of creating a generation of experimental taildragger pilots that want to do what Trent does, but don’t have the skills to avoid dying.
  23. Note sure whether this has already been mentioned, but Aviation Consumer had a nice article on budget IFR panels in a relatively recent issue. I think all of the products here are still relevant. https://www.aviationconsumer.com/avionics/ifr-on-a-budget-the-15k-upgrade/
  24. I’m happy that the used avionics market is still so strong, but I seriously can’t imagine myself spending anywhere near 5 grand on a 20-year-old radio. If I wanted a WAAS capable navigator and had a 5 AMU budget, I’d probably get one of the new slimline nav-only GPS 175 units from Garmin (as mentioned several times above). These are under 5k new from online retailers. With a little more money, you could get the same unit with com (GNC 355). Starting a new panel today with a 20-year-old navigator just seems like it’s not going to end well. The GNS units are fantastic, and buying a brand-new one today for 4k might be a bargain. But buying a used one that has been flown for 20 years and saves only a few hundred bucks over a 2022 navigator seems like it will end up costing money in the long run.
  25. Do you mean it's optimistic when operating lean of peak?
