  1. Seriously, LORAN is looking better and better. My old GPS+LORAN combo radio isn’t going to do me much good, but I might well buy an e-LORAN receiver when that technology matures.
  2. Definitely. VOR-based RNAV units were reliable for enroute navigation 30 years ago, and since a modern nav unit would know where it was at the time the GNS disappeared, it could easily keep track of nearby VORs and navigate to your destination with none of the INS drift. I wonder why they don’t do this.
  3. Doesn’t this already happen automatically? I thought I remembered that the GTN will go into a “GPS unavailable” mode and use ground-based station data to maintain navigation. ETA: Yep, here it is: Not really clear whether that’s using VOR or some kind of software “best guess” about location.
  4. Yeah, this was pretty meh. They said that the confident announcement yesterday was based on “stale data.”
  5. I’ve been following the e-LORAN developments with some interest. Seems like it has a future for area navigation. https://www.militaryaerospace.com/rf-analog/article/14181490/eloran-loran-c-gps-gnss
  6. My understanding from watching it earlier was that they did establish contact from the UK station 15 mins after touchdown
  7. Oh? Interesting - I thought it was already available for upgrade.
  8. Presumably the Avidnye Entegra system was on the type certificate for Cirrus aircraft, and today those can be replaced with an upgraded Avidyne unit -- might be a business opportunity for Garmin to replace a whole bunch of legacy G1000 systems. https://www.avidyne.com/avidyne-announces-vantage-flight-display-systems-unveils-cirrus-upgrade-program/ ETA: There's already a similar upgrade path from Garmin: https://mooneyspace.com/topic/38195-g1000-to-nxi-upgrade/ Fortunately Garmin is a (relatively) thriving company and isn't likely to go anywhere soon..
  9. Well, I think I’ve solved this. I have only ever tried to connect an iPad to the G3X before, never an iPhone. But I tried connecting my iPhone just to see what happens, and I got the message below (“PFD config module not Apple compatible”). Apparently the G3X has a little module in the connector that can be either Apple compatible or not Apple compatible, and mine has the wrong one. It’s a brand-new G3X, just picked it up last month. I contacted Garmin support to make sure that it’s a hardware thing and not a software thing, and they confirmed that the hardware module needs to be replaced. Hopefully this will help someone else avoid lots of hair-pulling ETA: According to the install manual, Garmin seems to be prepared to swap the module on request.
  10. I’ll be interested to see some photos when your plane is done. I kept my factory annunciator panel, and it looks fine - but definitely crappier than everything else on the panel
  11. Does anyone from Aveo hang out here? If not, we should invite them
  12. Not a State Trooper, but any time I’m driving on a Friday or Saturday night I see cars that shouldn’t be on the road. Especially if there’s a big event or whatever and people are heading home. But I’ve never seen a pilot that I thought was intoxicated.
  13. Your post made me wonder what portion of a premium cost is going to the open pilot clause. Zero other pilots have flown my Mooney since the day I bought it, and I don’t have any intention of changing that track record anytime soon
  14. This product seems to have landing and recog lights? I thought the existing conforma product just had nav/strobes - https://www.aveoengineering.com/crystal-conforma-for-mooney/
  15. Interesting - do they have any photos of these installed on a Mooney?
  16. There were a couple of threads on this a few months back - https://mooneyspace.com/topic/46729-alright-which-one-of-you-was-this/
  17. Wow, that's ... something. Given the number of (apparently) inebriated drivers I see on the road, it's actually refreshing how unusual it is to encounter pilots in the same condition. I hope that this is a serious outlier.
  18. This seems to be what happens. I don’t touch the Bluetooth settings at all, and the iPad automatically connects to both the G3X and the GTX. The only issue (which might be an issue with GP, I don’t know) is that GP never shows the G3X connected on the devices page.
  19. I was able to take some photos the other day - as far as I can tell, both the iPad and the G3X are reporting that they are correctly connected. It’s Garmin Pilot that doesn’t seem to recognize the G3X exists. (Every time I try to access the G3X on the devices page, it shows me the info on how to connect.) If you see any clues here about what I’m doing wrong, please advise
  20. Yes, just look for the donate button and send Craig a donation. It’s good for one year ad-free.
  21. Yeah - Ultimately the DZ has seemed like a solution want of a problem (for me), but there are at least a couple of use cases where I keep thinking it would be valuable. I’m happy with my portable, and really haven’t had any problems with it. But e.g. when I’m flying in someone else’s a/c, I normally just grab my headset and a certificates lanyard, and it’s not unusual then to be flying around with no CO detection. Having it integrated in the headset means you always have it with you.
  22. I would install one of these tomorrow if they had a Mooney STC. I wonder if the data @Ethan collected would help B&C move the needle on certification.
  23. I keep thinking about the DZ because of the integrated CO detector, which seems like a good idea - but I’m happy with Bose and I don’t have any particular reason to switch aside from the CO thing. My portable CO detector works fine, but it’s not integrated with my headset.
  24. I assume these are not combinable? It’s not (1100 x 1) + (1100 x 0.75) + (1100 x 0.50) + (1100 x 0) ?
