  1. The software limitations are real. If ForeFlight supported Android, you’d see a ton of flyers out there with an Android tablet. ForeFlight was saying for years that they were working on an Android release, and that Android support was “coming soon” .. but they quietly dropped the Android plan somewhere along the way, and the rest was history. I really wanted to be able to use Garmin Pilot on an Android tablet, but I got frustrated at the lack of feature parity, and I had a candid conversation with a Garmin support engineer who basically told me that they would never be releasing the latest features on Android - so I threw in the towel. Putting the GPS and the cellular chip together is annoying, but nothing new for Apple. Don’t get me started on expandable memory via SD card. Charging $200 for about $4 worth of flash memory should be an Apple trademark.
  2. Also … I definitely use an iPad as an EFB, not as a primary reference for anything. The screen is normally turned off unless I’m actively looking at it for something. I never use it for navigation. I do love having telemetry via Garmin EIS to capture flight and engine data in Garmin Pilot. That alone is worth the price of admission for me.
  3. I used a series of Android tablets and really preferred them to the iPad, but I ended up buying an iPad because the software options were better. I was running Garmin Pilot on Android, and it never had feature parity with the iPad version (often months or years behind). WingX I could never get my head around (despite the free version for CFIs) and Avare is awesome but limited. So now I’m using an iPad and holding my nose at the crummy hardware because the software is much better. Running latest Garmin Pilot and pretty happy with it.
  4. I would really feel better with a mobile mechanic who can visit the plane. You can usually find a mechanic at a neighboring field who will drive out for a nominal fee. If you’re going to do this flight, which I would recommend against, keep a very careful eye on the CO detector, and consider one of these:
  5. I wouldn’t fly the plane with 30-50ppm at cruise. I would consider it grounded until someone has fixed something.
  6. Sensationalism Without Facts is more or less the tagline for the Daily Mail
  7. I have my G5 to the right of the G3X on the top, and the analog indicator is directly below the G5 (between the G3X and the GTN).
  8. This is the approach I took. I have Max's #1-4 for primary, and then I kept my original secondary KX-155 with an analog indicator.
  9. I always share the Mooney service letter with the FBO manager via email and I want a written reply before they touch the plane Mooney-turn-radius-service-instruction.pdf
  10. I suspect that Alaska has the highest GA participation per capita
  11. No idea about the Aithre product, but many MSers are happy with the Inogen G5. Search for “oxygen concentrator”
  12. Given how few of these aircraft are still running, you’d almost have to get typed in the one you’re planning to fly. I think it’s amazing that DG has been offering instruction in his DC-3 all this time, and it’s definitely a bucket list rating that probably won’t go on as many bucket lists now.
  13. Looks like almost everything they sell is for experimental category a/c … where are you seeing the certified units?
  14. Only 56,000 hours total time!
  15. That’s the problem these guys are trying to solve. Kind of a niche product but also pretty cool. https://remarkable.com/
  16. I have a Mini 5 and a Gen 1 Pencil, so that’s fair. I have an iPad case that stores the Pencil alongside the iPad, but the Pencil is held very securely and it’s nearly impossible for it to depart the case. (But not impossible for me to drop in the cockpit while using )
  17. This is true of a Surface Pro tablet I have too - I’ve had it for several years, and the pencil has never once needed new batteries. Functionality is similar to the Apple Pencil, which constantly needs to be recharged. I’m not sure what the difference might be, but the Surface Pro came with the pencil (which uses alkaline batteries) and it just lasts forever.
  18. I use an Apple Pencil, and it’s definitely better than using a finger or a cheapo alternative, but the charge doesn’t last super long and I always neglect to charge it. It’s great when it’s charged and working though.
  19. Would be good to hear what @Scott Dennstaedt, PhD has to say about this topic
  20. If anyone does this, I’d be super interested to know if it works.
  21. One of the really nice things about using Google Fi as a mobile provider is that they’ll give you data SIM cards for free. The data SIM just counts against your regular phone plan usage. I’ve installed Google Fi data SIMs in a few different cellular-capable devices at the hangar, and it’s basically free.
  22. Nice work! Congratulations
  23. There's about 300 million people in the US and about 700k licensed pilots - I think that's like 0.2%
  24. Woohoo! Nice
