  1. That looks like quite an undertaking. I admire you for taking it on!
  2. Happy Labor Day! Michelle and I flew over to Winter Haven KGIF for lunch today at the Flightline Cafe. She had the California Chicken Club sandwich and sweet potato fries. Having plainer tastes, I went for the Steak Sandwich with regular fries. My steak had just a nice twinge of flavor to it. Couldn't finish the fries because I was full. We both felt the food was excellent. They even had a guitarist come in and he started playing as we were getting ready to leave. His first number was "Misty" and he sounded really good. I would have stayed to listen but the forecast was for some weather after 1:00pm and I didn't want to push my luck. Purchased Full Serve AVGAS while having lunch. They discount your fuel price by .20 per gallon if you eat in the restaurant. Thought $3.92 for full serve was well worth it. Didn't feel like standing out in the sun anyway. As we approached Hidden Lake, we had one shower down by Lake Tarpon and the Lynx was showing some good radar returns up North, to the East of Crystal River. Neither was a factor but it was starting to build up pretty good. Saw a Luscombe landing at Winter Haven. It looked like either an 8E or 8F model. Don't seem to see them flying very often. Keeping with that theme for the day, there was a Cessna 190 / 195 at the fuel pumps when we got back to Hidden Lake. A nice ending to a decent day of flying.
  3. This one was special!
  4. As a second generation pilot, I had the benefit of tagging along with my Dad when he was shopping for his airplanes. When we lived in Southern California, this involved literally hundreds of trips to the many airfields within driving distance from where we lived in Santa Monica and later near Torrance. My Dad was very particular and under his tutelage, I learned a lot from him. Dad would like to find out where the airplane was based and, ideally, would check it out first without the owner being present. He was good that way in that he could usually tell within five minutes of looking at an airplane whether he had any interest in it or not. He didn't want to waste the owner's time if he had no interest in the airplane. I was a part of this process that went on for several YEARS before he found a beautiful 1964 C model Mooney that he would buy and we would fly from Torrance to Philadelphia and back again. What made it even more special was that I was the one who spotted the Mooney with the For Sale sign in the window. It was a Sunday afternoon and we had just finished an early family dinner at Skytrails Restaurant. We took the drive North from the restaurant along the West side of Van Nuys Airport and I spotted N7106U parked next to the ivy covered chain linked fence. It was 1970 and I was 13 years old but I remember it like it was yesterday. I think it is very difficult to effectively shop for and purchase airplanes that are far away from where you live. My experience has shown me that there are relatively very few airplanes that are for sale at any given time that you would really want to own. There are always plenty of projects out there just waiting for someone to come along and pay the "big bills", as Dad used to call them, but very few airplanes that are sharp looking inside and out, with low time on a good engine and up to date avionics. That is pretty tough to find and when you do, it usually comes at what appears to be a premium price and they usually don't stay on the market very long. I said "appears to be a premium price" because after you take on a project and do the paint, interior, glass, soundproofing, avionics, etc...and deal with the aggravation, inconvenience and expense, that premium priced airplane will start to look a lot more reasonable. We are all different and have different priorities but buying a used airplane is a challenging and expensive proposition. It was so even back in the 1960s and 1970s when there were more airplanes around, more airplanes being produced and more airports to shop at than we have today. I have been fortunate to have owned two different airplanes and to have been an owner for 20 years and counting. I can tell you that it is irrationally expensive and sometimes very frustrating but still a very personally rewarding experience. I sincerely wish you great success with finding your airplane!
  5. Just goes to show that you can find people of character even in the most unexpected places.
  6. Similar experience except I started with Goodyears and they just didn't hold up. Went to the Air Hawks and realized much longer life. Never looked back
  7. The airplane won't wreck the car or talk back to you...

  9. I wish we could get away from labeling people and their ideas with terms like "Socialism". I think it does us all more harm then good and tends to create division instead of unity. In the last election cycle I couldn't get over how many people would not even consider supporting Senator Sanders because "He's a Socialist!" These were comments that I heard directly from people who, by and large, enjoyed their monthly Social Security checks and benefitted greatly from their Medicare benefits. Both of these programs are textbook examples of Socialist programs. We sure don't want anything like that now, do we?
  10. You should feel proud of your country. There are many here in the Colonies who have nothing but great affection for our traditional allies and that will not change no matter who occupies the Oval Office.
  11. Yes he is retired and lives in the community where my plane is hangared. My response to the bill was "is that all?" He explained that I help him keep his CFI current. Does he deserve more? ABSOLUTELY! He sure does put a lot of thought and effort into it. During the year following my heart attack, when I was trying to get my Medical back, Mike would sit right seat as P-I-C so that my Dad and I could still fly our airplane and keep the Insurance Company happy. He would only accept $20 from us and you could tell that he felt guilty about charging us that. He would say "all I did is go for a ride, I didn't do anything." That is just the kind of guy he is. He's pretty special.
  12. A timely question as I just completed mine today. CFI gave me an assignment to work prior to our appointment. Had to plan a flight from home base to a major Class B airport to pick up a passenger with baggage and return. He wanted the flight plan, weight and balance / CG information, fuel consumption, weather briefing, the works. We reviewed all this on the ground prior to flying. We took off and proceeded on course to start the trip and then went into the maneuvers starting with a turn sequence, followed by a stall series and then simulated instrument flight. Did some unusual attitudes and then proceeded to a controlled field for normal, short field and soft field takeoffs and landings...no touch and goes. From there we had a simulated fire on board followed by the simulated forced landing then returned to our home base. Back in the hangar we reviewed the FARs, debriefed the flight and completed the paperwork. Flew 1.3 hours and spent a total of 3.5 hours with him. Total charge...$40.00! I had flown some 98 hours since my last Flight Review but still found it a good exercise and a confidence builder as well. A very positive and worthwhile experience all the way around.
  13. That is great. A lot of fun too, I bet!

  17. While Top Gun was good, Twelve O'clock High, Strategic Air Command, High Road to China, Bridges at Toko-ri , The Blue Max, The Right Stuff, The Time Flyer were all better. Nobody mentioned 633 Squadron starring Cliff Robertson. That film will have you on the edge of your seat for the last 40 minutes or so...lots of action. They even used three airworthy Mosquitos in the film (1964), one of which is now owned by Kermit Weeks. The Tarnished Angels starring Robert Stack and Rock Hudson had two Culver Darts used in air racing sequences. That film is worth watching if only to see the old airplanes and for the scene with Rock Hudson's eulogy to Roger. Captains of the Clouds was one of my Dad's favorites. Airplane for laughs. "We're going on instruments" followed by the crew playing music on their band instruments...
  18. I only looked at the partial engine log books and the smoh numbers just don't seem to make sense to me. As of 5/01/2009 it indicates 683.1 smoh. On 10/05/2010 it indicates 429.8 smoh. How does that happen? Especially since the total time on the engine went from 3789.2 as of 5/01/2009 to 3798.56 on 10/05/2010. My advice would be to RUN ...not walk...away from this one. Also see a note about Main Spar upper cap damage repair in the first airframe log from 11/03/2010.
  19. Stopped in for lunch at Winterhaven today. I saw that their restaurant had re-opened recently and wanted to give it a try. Food was "very good" to "great". My wife had the Club Sandwich and commented that she thought that it was better and less expensive than the Club Sandwich at The Hangar at Albert Whitted (KSPG). I had my usual plain hamburger, medium well bathed in ketchup and some fries. The burger was very pleasing and I only ate about half the fries as I was full. The fries were really good too. They were not busy but we were there early for the lunch crowd. The service was very good and one of the Managing Partners even stopped by our table to welcome us. Good lunch! You guys should give it a try sometime.
  20. You forgot the wind-up Timex watch!
  21. Regardless of what the paperwork says, it really is all about the people. They either will work well together and make it a positive experience or they won't. My Dad (I'm a second generation pilot) never had anything positive to say about airplane partnerships. He told me that they were usually a group of guys trying to fly that don't want to spend any money on the airplane. That leads to problems. I grew up with a natural aversion to these types of arrangements. Years later, Dad and I purchased a Grumman Cheetah together. We split the costs 50/50 for the four years that we owned her. We never once had a disagreement about finances or what to do with the plane. The day we sold the Cheetah I asked Dad if I was a "good partner"? He simply said "the best". Made me feel better on what was one of the saddest days of my life. Years later we bought another airplane together, the one I still have 16 years later. You might be interested in our contract. It was just a handshake.
  22. Why run the risk of a "denial" when you are already good to go under BasicMed? That is why I chose not to renew my Special Issuance which expired March 31, 2017. It wasn't worth the risk for 1 month of flying privileges.
  23. I had my physical exam with my family Doctor (MD) today. He had absolutely no problem with giving me the exam or completing the Checklist form. He was very thorough and completed every item on the form adding his notes and comments to the form itself. We spent a good 45+ minutes together, discussing the program and how it compared to the old way of doing things with an AME. I told him in a very direct manner that there will come a time that I may need to stop flying due to my health or cognitive decline. I told him that he needs to be honest with me and deliver that message when the time comes. Believe me, that is a message that I am not going to want to receive. For this program to work and actually benefit us, I think we need to have that open dialogue with our Doctors. I think we also need to take a more active, knowledgeable role in our health. After dinner I sat down and completed the on-line course. The course itself, was very well done. It is interesting, not dull and boring. There are plenty of short videos and attractive graphics throughout. There are also links to many other resources for each topic in case you would like additional information. The people who put this together obviously did it in a very thoughtful and professional manner. I learned a few things. The test was straight forward and I passed with a score of 90 on my first attempt. I printed out my certificate and am now ready to fly under BasicMed effective 5/1/2017! If you are on the fence about trying BasicMed, you can take the on-line course to see what it is like with no cost or obligation. In the past, I would never tell an AME about any health concerns that I had. If he asked, my answer was always the same. "I am the picture of health." My attitude was "what he doesn't know won't hurt me." I wanted to fly. He snickered to himself, knowing full well that I was "full of it", but that is how the system worked. Of course, my family Doctor knew better too. He's the one I would be open and honest with. After all, he couldn't ground me. That is how the old system worked. Everyone knew it and everyone was happy. Thinking back on it now, that was all just plain silly. My family Doctor is the most knowledgeable person with regards to my health. He should be the one to advise me and be part of the decision making process, along with my family, for when my flying days come to an end. I think that is how it should be and that is far more preferable than having some physician in Oklahoma City making that decision for me. P.S. Yes, my Doctor did complete item #9 on the Checklist, the exam of my "anus". We discussed it and both laughed about it. I did share with him that I have sent an email to the FAA asking them to explain the rationale behind that item. Another Mooneyspace member also was questioning this. I pointed out to the FAA that over the past 34 years since I took my first AME administered exam as a Student Pilot that not one of the four (4) AMEs that have examined me ever once examined my "anus". I can now honestly report without any doubts that mine has now been examined. Apparently I do have one.
  24. I make hotel reservations and have a rental car waiting for me at the airport whenever possible. If you're going to get caught in weather and have to stop short, hope you end up at somewhere like Sporty's (Batavia, Ohio) who will bend over backwards in helping you find a hotel room and provide a loaner car as well.
  25. The form is certainly no worse than the on-line application that we had to / would still need to complete for a Third Class medical Certificate. My family Doctor already has told me that he is willing to do this for me so I am not expecting any problems there. I see a lot of positives with this. First, I no longer need to see a government designated physician every couple of years and take repetitive, meaningless tests (I was on Special Issuance) in order to enjoy my hobby. Second, my family Doctor, one who actually examines me and knows my health and gives me a far more comprehensive exam than any AME ever did, will have input on my decision as to when I stop flying. It won't be decided for me by some Doctor in Oklahoma City or some beaurocrat in D.C. Third, I can have an honest discourse with my Doctors (family and Cardiologist) about my health and then I get to make an informed decision as to when I need to "hang it up". Finally, I'll get to go out on my terms rather than have something that is precious to me taken away by some stranger in a far away place. I saw this happen to my Dad and it should never happen to any of us. If you embrace the good intentions behind the program and understand that an effort has been made to better protect our freedoms for those who fly for fun, then I believe you will find a lot to be pleased with. It isn't all that we had originally hoped for but it is certainly a step in that direction. As someone else once said "for all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."
