  1. Do you think the southern slave holders in the late 18th C century were any different and wanting to protect their “property”?
  2. For the last 34 years, I have been a participant in one of the most freewheeling groups on the internet (yes, since 1989, on USENET). There are only 2 rules: 1. There are no rules 2. Go ride (it’s a motorcycle group.) That group works because the community at large, in the absence of any moderator, won’t take any shit. here OTOH people say stupid shit every single day, and the community just let’s it slide, and sometimes even encourages it by piling on, participating, and debating. if you want to have an unmoderated, freewheeling environment then the community has to have some balls and shut the stupid shit down
  3. We (Americans) as a people used to talk about "commonweal" -- the promotion of "happiness, health, and safety of all of the people of a community or nation -- and "public policy," -- laws and regulations for the commonweal. Federalism gave us the notion that each State could have its own public policy, which means we have things state health insurance, state taxes, state drivers licensees, state gun regulations, state education. Energy is a very local topic -- gas, oil, coal, sunlight, wind, pipelines all have deep local implications. But national security, foreign policy, defense, pollution, transportation, commerce and economic issues make energy a national issue. It also turns out that extraction, production and distribution of oil, gas, and coal find themselves in Red states and consumption (and therefore pollution) in (populous northeast and California)Blue states. Texas notably is both. So there is an innate geographic tension to this, and politicians at the Federal level are contending with this, specially in the Senate which is not truly representative. So what one person might call "national public energy policy" another person will call it "authoritarian."
  4. I’m not sure it works pretty well. Two people have up and left, with laments all around. And there are topics which should be shut down (climate, really?). And posts which bash people (usually liberals, but others too). And some pretty stupid shit about people needing to learn to fly tailwheels. Honestly, this site is about 25% dumpster fire, 25% useful stuff, and 50% random banter. I wouldn’t mind some tools in order to adjust those percentages to have a better.
  5. I will try it. Can you describe the sequence of operations on the GTN/GFC ?
  6. I'm looking forward (haha) to having them installed! Thanks @OSUAV8TER
  7. when I saw "scat hose" I thought of something else
  8. any chance you can put them up on dropbox, google drive, etc?
  9. now we just need a formula to convert that to crosswind component!
  10. some of these comments are ironic given the sarcastic and arrogant reception I got when I asked about blocking people in another thread. perhaps if it was possible to block repeat offenders, people wouldn’t up and go.
  11. So many people trained in high-wing airplanes, some with smaller rudders, where the high wing with full flaps will blanket the empennage, and reduce rudder authority, that this became a widely held belief that it applies to all airplanes It is simply not *universally* true for low-wing airplanes, and especially ones with a lot of rudder authority like the mooney. I landed in these conditions will full flaps
  12. I use the ForeFlight checklist system
  13. Still on engine #1. 1998
  14. Make sure you get wiring diagrams to go with your install. They could come in handy in the future if someone needs to get in there
  15. the small difference in price was well worth it given the much lower frustration level, and how much closer it is to me.
  16. I had my annual done at Air-Mods, and the they did a great job, but I often had difficult getting ahold of them. leaving messages, un-retunred calls, follow-ups that never happen. C&W has much better service and does as good if not better job
  17. yes, I mentioned that. its called "USB Power Delivery"
  18. All you have to do is go to FlightRadar24.com and filter by AA5 and M20P to see the difference
  19. this is a specious argument. the key is compatibility among disparate devices with various capabilities, not for every device to have every feature. You really want a USB-C to- USB-A cable for your android phone in the plane because your plane's USB port doesn't have fast-charge capability, and a USB-C to USB-C on your desk for fast charging the same device? one cable, both ends identical, plug goes in right-side-up or right-side-down, provides enough power for any device, and data transmission speed sufficient for anything between a mouse and a 4K display but who cares. stick with USB-A to micro B
  20. I blame Georg Simon Ohm, Alessandro Volta, and André-Marie Ampère seriously, though, improvements in power and data transmission speeds are to blame. can't watch TikTok over RS-232
  21. and you can always have one of these in your flight bag for That One Odd device, while still enjoying all the benefits of USB-C
  22. I didn't -- that's why I pointed out USB-A to Lightening for iPad. but your point is irrelevant because the USB-A power port in your plane will never be 'matched branded equipment' to whatever cockamamie device you're talking about and its also irrelevant because this post is about answering the question "what type of USB ports should I put in my new panel?" nobody is making USB 3.0 ports and nobody is putting out high power USB-A equipment anymore.
