If it's been flying regularly and has been annual'ed on schedule for the last 9 years, I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.

Sorry for the delayed replies. I've been at the avionics shop all day trying to push the project along... with limited success. I think I'm all caught up and everyone who's asked, has been sent the link. Check your PM's as that's how I'm sending them out. I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying the map, and as long as people don't start moving around too much, I can probably keep it up to date.

For those of you who don't follow the Bugs and Suggestions forum, I've put together a map with pins indicating the approximate location of MooneySpace members. There are currently 99 members listed on the map. Most of them are in the US of course, but there are also some in Canada, Australia, and the UK. To get access to the map, you'll need to be listed on the map. To be listed on the map you need to have either a City or Airport listed under your avatar. The map will have a pin in your town or city, not specific airport. The map only lists screen name and city. No other information, personal or otherwise is listed. The purpose of the map is simple. When traveling to an area of the country, you'll be able to see which MooneySpace members are in the area and will have a screen name you can contact via private message here on MooneySpace. The map is searchable by screen name or city. This is not an official MooneySpace feature, just a personal project of mine. It was suggested by @Roger O and I've had assistance from @RLCarter on this project. If you have the link, please do not share it to protect the privacy of the members. If you'd like to be listed on the map and have a link to the map, send me a message or respond to this thread. Enjoy...

Possible partnership offered in a 66 M20C
gsxrpilot replied to flyhigh603's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
@RobertGary1 Post #7 - flyhigh603 - "and about $7,000 into the motor she's been a money eater first annual." Post #16 - gsxrpilot - "I'm gonna guess the $7K was for the annual, not engine work." Post #17 - flyhigh603 - "Yes $7,000 was for annual including fixing a lot of minor discrepancies." Post #18 - flyhigh603 - "The reason I put $7,000 into a motor that has 2600 hrs is because it starts right up" Obviously the "motor" in Post #7 and #18 is referring to the whole airplane. He's stated several times that there is nothing wrong with the engine. And that's why he was willing to put $7000 into the annual of a plane with a 2600 hour engine. His writing isn't all that clear, and he doesn't have a grasp of the correct terminology. After all, Mooneys don't have motors unless they're electric gear models and then its a fairly small component that moves the landing gear. But as I said, based on the entire conversation here, it's more believable that the OP's terminology is wrong rather than an A&P suckered him into spending $7000 on a 2600 hour, perfectly running engine, but not overhauling it. A $7000 annual isn't completely out of line and that's what he did. $7000 to repair a 2600 hour engine that is already running perfectly, is lunacy. But that's not what was done here. -
I agree, but those people are not buying the plane because it's all they can fit in the budget. If you've got an $80K budget and choose to buy a $30K plane so you can build it the way you like... its a beautiful thing. But if you're buying at the edge of your budget, it needs to be turn-key or it can ruin you. It can still ruin you, but is less likely to do so.

All sounds good to me. On sight visit next?

You gotta read the whole thread. The $7000 is the cost of the annual, not spent on the engine. And while that's a lot for an M20C, it's understandable for a plane with a lot of deferred maintenance. -
Walk me through the purchase process?
gsxrpilot replied to ragedracer1977's topic in General Mooney Talk
I wouldn't bother with escrow on a sub $50K purchase. The deposit of about $5K should hold the plane through the pre-buy. Do a title search, I paid AOPA to do it, took two days. With a clear title and pre-buy good, next steps. Call your insurance company and bind coverage for the plane (this is not required unlike with a car) Download and print a couple copies of AC form 8050-1 from the FAA.gov site. Download and print a couple copies of AC form 8050-2 from the FAA.gov site as well. Hand over the funds. I did this via wire to the sellers bank account. Fill out all forms with seller signing and printing name in the appropriate places on both forms. You'll send original signed copies to the FAA along with $5. Keep a copy of 8050-1 in the airplane as your temporary registration. The seller should keep the current registration card with their name on it. Take the keys, fuel it up, fly it home. -
Texas Spring 2017 Mooney Fly in Dallas Exec May 20
gsxrpilot replied to Yetti's topic in General Mooney Talk
I definitively won't have a plane to fly by this weekend. So I'm pretty sure I won't be attending... but if it moves to Sunday and if someone from the Austin area has an open right seat... I can't do Saturday. -
You should just trade it in through Avionic Source for a PMA450a. They are amazing audio panels, and are plug and play with your GMA340. So no installation cost at all.

+1 for a VC compass... the only way to go. *get a new mechanic ;-)

$7000 into an engine with 2600 hours on it is a unquestionable waste of money. BUT a $7000 annual on an airplane with 2600 hours on a good running engine is fine. I probably wouldn't buy into your airplane with 2600 on the engine unless you subtracted the full cost of an overhaul from the the calculated value of the airplane. But I'm fully on board with running an airplane as far past TBO as it will go with good compression and without making metal. *point of order... a motor runs on electricity, an engine runs on gas/diesel/jetA, or some other fossil fuel. -
Regarding the tool kit... as @Mooney_Mike I think said, you need a cell phone and good credit card. As long as you've got those covered... it's just one flight at a time between fuel stops. If you try to cross the country on a schedule in any light single, you'll likely be disappointed. But if you plan to take it just one fuel stop at a time, a Mooney will impress you with how far it will go. Enjoy the trip!

I would make sure that the owner knows that nothing can happen during a pre-buy inspection that would ground an airplane. That is as long as the annual is current. This is well documented and explained both by Savvy (Mike Busch) as well as Don Maxwell, JD Castile, etc. Assuming the customer knows this and still won't let you take it to the shop of your choice, and at your expense for a PPI, I wouldn't buy the plane. Full stop. Unfortunately he'll still sell the plane, there are plenty of suckers out there. There are about five or six of them on this forum now after buying shitty airplanes that will cost more to get airworthy than it would have cost to buy a model or two up the Mooney line. Don't join that club. A seller who won't let you take it to a reputable MSC for a pre-buy isn't a reputable seller and should be treated as such.
-
I agree with Scott. I think this plane might be priced properly already. If it will pass a thorough and independent PPI, at $45K it's a good deal.

If you fit in a cessna or bonanza, you'll fit better in a Mooney. The Mooney cockpit is wider and there's more leg room.

Good contact in Sping Branch, Tx re Encore for sale?
gsxrpilot replied to HXG's topic in General Mooney Talk
Brian Lloyd lives on the field in Spring Branch, and flies a K model himself. But he's probably a bit busy right now. I think he leaves on Sunday in his M20K for a quick circumnavigation of the globe. It all starts with a New York to Paris speed run to set the world record for speed between the two cities in a piston single. A record currently held by a Bonanza.
