First time owner of a Mooney M20E

I'm not at DVT, but here in Texas I had a lease on a hangar a couple of months before I found the plane. -

I'll be the contrarian here (it's been trending today). For me it's ADSB and done. Understand I'm generally flying west of the Mississippi and things might be different out here. But ADSB on my iPad is always good enough. Another thing is that the weather capability of ATC has improved significantly over the years. I find that ATC is vectoring me around weather even when IMC and those vectors match what I'm seeing from ADSB as well. I've had the stormscope and XM weather. I canceled the XM and the stormscope is up for sale. Finally, the resolution is so poor with both XM and the stormscope compared to ADSB on the large iPad screen, that even though the ADSB weather is delayed, it's much easier to use. When I had all three, I just never used either the stormscope or XM. So for me it just ADSB and an assist from ATC. Just my $0.02

Hi Don, I haven't given anyone edit permission :-) This was actually just a personal project used to kill time while my plane is still in the shop. I purposely didn't list airports as some members pointed out that since their plane sits out on the ramp, they didn't want that much info public. My initial thought here was that City was close enough and for example if I'm headed to the DFW area, I could look on the map and see you listed there. Then I could send you a message through MooneySpace privately to ask which airport, if you'd like to meet up, fuel recommendations, FBO, etc. Anyway, that was my thought. I'm open to suggestions from the group.

Check your messages... I sent you the link. Just a little project, giving me something to do while my plane is still in the shop. In the interest of privacy... it's only available to those who put Location in their avatar with at least City or Airport.
-
I'll respectfully disagree... It was pre-solo for me. But that's what the CFI is there for. To make up for anything I lack as a student.
-
The best way to find a CFI who will train in a Mooney... is to own your Mooney first. :-) But you don't need a CFI to go up in a Mooney and get some stick time. If you'll put your city or airport location on your avatar, I'll add you to the MooneySpace Map and send you a link.
-
And a contrarian's opinion... I would often get a call from my CFI saying, the wind is up and all the flight schools are grounded. We'll have the pattern to ourselves. Lets go fly. Consequently strong crosswind conditions have never been an issue for me. I'm thankful for those windy days and a CFI who would go up with me on those days.

M20 C uncommanded gear extension
gsxrpilot replied to Urs_Wildermuth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I don't think a checklist item is warranted. Sometimes shit happens and you just react to it. You reacted properly By the time you pull out a checklist on this one, you're several steps behind. -
You're on the map... check your messages. :-)

Please add it to your avatar or signature line. I'll send you the link.

It remains to be seen... the CB's hanging around this site aren't the easiest to sell to.

M20 C uncommanded gear extension
gsxrpilot replied to Urs_Wildermuth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
The gear speeds on the electric gear Mooney's are much higher. I do believe that if you exceed THOSE gear speeds you risk wrecking the doors. But with the manual gear Mooney, my belief is that you could drop the gear at up to electric gear speeds without damaging any doors. But the lower speed is because of needing to control the swing of the Johnson bar. That is just my speculation, but it makes sense to my engineering mind. Please insert @carusoam's standard list of disclaimers here... it's just my opinion. -
Regarding a CFI for a checkout... the Dean of Mooney CFI's lives right there in the Bay Area and flies a Bravo. That mean's he's no more than about 30 Bravo minutes from where that plane is. @donkaye does Mooney instruction full time. You might reach out to him and work something out. You could even do just a couple of hours with Don in the NorCal area and then jump in with your own CFI for the flight home to Phoenix. Or I have no doubt Don would be willing to fly it to Phoenix with you and provide instruction the whole way.

If you turn the front wheel using a tow bar gently but all the way to the stop, then feel where the tubing above the front wheel contacts the frame. If someone has towed it wrong and turned it too tight, there will be dents on the back sides of the tubing. You can feel it with your fingers. The only reason I say turn the front wheel is so you know where to feel for the dents.

MooneySpace is a public forum that anyone can access which is good. But consequently contact info such as email or phone is a really bad idea. The idea here is that if you want a contact somewhere, look at the name and send a message on MooneySpace to that member. At this time I'm only putting members who have location info in their profile. And I'm also only sending the link to members who are listed on the map. I'm trying to be sensitive to the privacy of members who are not listing location info. You can bookmark the link in your browser. It will automatically update as I make updates to the map. As of yet, this is just a personal project and not sanctioned by MooneySpace ownership. I'm very interested in feedback.

Seems like you'd almost have to add power to run off the end of that one. But of course, it all depends on how much of that completely useless commodity, runway behind, there is when you touch down.

Your was probably typical of 95% of instrument flights. You'll take off into weather that is keeping all the VFR birds on the ground. Then you'll cruise in the bright sunlight and smooth air to your destination and finally be disappointed that it's just a simple visual approach that gets you back on the ground. But you flew it instead of driving it! Congrats on the rating. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do mine.

So I've been putting a map together. I've only put members on the map who have listed either a city or an airport on their profile. I'm happy to share it with anyone who is listed on the map. If you are not listed on the map, I will not share the map with you. If all you listed in your profile is a State, @carusoam, @Marauder, @201er, for example, you're not on the map. If anyone would like to be on the map, just tell me and make sure a city or airport is listed in your profile under your avatar. Likewise if someone doesn't want to be on my map, just tell me and you'll be removed. I've assumed if you've listed a city or airport, you're fine with another member having that information. The only detail is the screen name and a pin in the location. There are no other identifying information. Here's an example. Let me know what you think...
