Older military jets use fuel tank sealant (PRC ) on all the panels. Sealant makes its own gasket when closed. Back side of the panels are coated with vaseline to prevent getting stuck permanently. It's published is some manuals, but I have not tried it myself. I imagine you could use some clear silicone and do the same process. Leave the screws slightly loose while it dries, then full torque when it dries. Wipe up the Vaseline prior to install. Ours were like a tuna can when we tried to get them off from the first time...Surface area is a crazy thing. -Matt

If the skin is not cracked, its most likely ok. Might try and roll it out and then use some High Speed aerodynamic filler. Not Bondo, but something a bit better that feathers well and won't shrink. Your Paint shops will use what they like. Looks like its in a good spot to blend out or just repaint that white strips. +1 OpenSkyflyer. What else did they "not fix." Years ago, I worked a shop and we replaced the center skin on the left wing of a "C". Pitot tube jammed thru the skin...That was some work! Match drilling worked well. $$$. -Matt

Pre-buy recommendations for Phoenix area
MB65E replied to Hambone's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Executive Aircraft Maintenance, or Glendale Aero Services. KGEU. Doing a full Annual inspection is a good thing if its close to its Calendar date. Items can be missed during a PPI. With an Annual the signature behind it can cover it all!! -Matt -
Lost 26 lbs during our little rebuild project. Starter and altenator r&r. Removed all the old radios and their unneeded antennas, installed a used 530,kx155 and some others. Removed the vaccume system and its components. Added used king hsi, and electric gyro.Added several circuit beakers. Re-wired many systems with current wiring, removed all unneeded wiring. (some shops will only service loop unneeded wires). On sheer loads, low profile washers and nuts can be used. Modern prop Govoner. An actual re-weigh of the aircraft is also a good thing. You can do a lot if things are ripped apart for a year...Kinda fun. -Matt

Holy Crap! 35*!!! Was the mag loose? I can't believe it was running anything close to normal temperature. Glad you found it. +11 or so For the Skytec! If funds don't allow, just clean the terminals off the battery, starter silinoide, and starter. Should start like a champ now! Servo and adjustment I'd leave alone for a while until you put some time on the new mags. The idle mixture will change seasonly. Rpm should rise +25 or so when the moisture is slowly pulled out starting at 900 rpm with a warm engine. Enjoy the new mags!!

Garmin MX 20 - What can I do with it?
MB65E replied to Martin H's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Martin- I think the mx20 can overlay victor airways. Flew a Bravo that had it for a bit and it was nice IFR in unfamilier places. Some people have text weather on them, you could run XM services on them. If you have the space you could leave it and tie it to the 530W. We had it in a helicopter that already came with it and Only used it for Xm radio services. I'd leave it untill it quits working. -
The PPI should do most of the negotiation for you. If its an airworthy item most guys will find it. Corrosion is a big one. Look in the Gear wells near all the seams near the spars. Wells could me cleaned to see... Engine mount cracks are hard to find. Ours was cracked on one of the tubes that was near the left lower mount. There may be light surface corrosion that can be fixed. Make sure the engine case is not cracked. Check the engine logs for repetitive "oil leak" fixes that may indicate a cracked case. Don't be emotionally involved! Don't do the PPI in an unheated hangar when it's 20* or on the ramp when it's 105*! All in all, you have the ball, but its not a Falcon either... Good luck! -Matt

Hi Bob, our original white arc ASI from pictures was marked 63-100 MPH. 65E s/n 551. We replaced the gauge with a one with a TAS calculator in it and had it re-faced to knots. This brought the white arc down to 55kts or so. I could not find in our AFM a published stall speed. I would think it would be around the 57mph as you mentioned. I believe there is some certification basis to stall at 61kts or slower. In several aircraft that 61 kts seems to be the Magic number. Lancair tries to stick to that. Flew a super hot legacy for a while that would actually finally quit flying at that 61kts. More to read it looks like.

m20f fuel stick calibration
MB65E replied to garysuperpilot's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I think this was talked about. Do a search for "fuel tank dipstick measurements" Its for the stock 52 gal tanks. 7-14-10 was the date on the post. Knute made the post with a nice little inch per gallon chart. -Matt -

Hi Bob, Only 3amps? Pretty low for all the bells and whistles? Looks nice. Once our engine is broke in ill see where it stacks up. Nice to see some other Good looking E's. Fly safe, Matt

Does it sound like something is loose inside? Maxwell fixed ours when it quit working. I was hesitant to open it due to the rivets on the case. We had ordered a new one (-503)from Mooney ($1800) at the time. We ended up waiting 3mo for the mooney one to show up, then Don was able to fix ours so we cancled the mooney order. No one had a used one here in the states, I called about 38 places. I didn't mind, but Don can't issue a 8130 for it... Don't know how that effects you in Europe. Silly VR design if you ask me... Best, Matt

Champion REM37BY gap setting 1967 M20F IO360A1A

.15 should pass through. .19 should not. "BY's" are great, I think you'll like them. -
Small crack in the case -- ugh, looks like engine rebuild time.
MB65E replied to rahill's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Just spent the last several months doing a Major Overhaul on our io360A1A. It was not so bad... Depends a lot on how recent your past 1500hr was. If it was done with in the last 10-15 years I'd do a field overhaul or have it overhauled at a shop. If its an older overhaul there is a ton of updating that needs to be done. Two piecs vs one piece Cam, Acc housing, rods could be corroded, Our case was shot too...Divco runs an excellent marketing department. $700 was the flat rate to repair the case IF it's reparable. Our A1A new to us overhauled case was $2800. I would do it over again the same way, but if I didn't have a Cylinder shop help out so much it would be much harder. Pacific Continental at Whiteman (KWHP). Runs an excellent shop and will treat you right. Lycon is great too, yes they do normal engines also. Excellent work as well with tons of experience! It's just hard to get Kenny on the phone some times. -
Mooneyspace name tags! Lol. Nice to run into Dave at the mooney forum. Thanks Dave.

Aircraftspruce and Skygeek.com are good starting points.

Gastons is really cool! Beautitful strip on the river! Branson Mo area ozarks would be nice.

Ours had an incorrect oring installed after the dukes pump overhaul. Changed oring, no smell. Lots of lines (fuel/brake)under the left seat floor boards. Some are hard to get a wrench on. If its smells, you'll see blue... -Matt

That 12' rule sure keeps you in check! Cj3 is 15'3". What else has 6 seats and burns JetA? Under the 12' rule? 1. Clipwing Luscombe, fabric wing with a C90 2. Beaver 3. B58 Turbine Barron 4. PC-21 5. And a Masterpiece by Steve Wolf! Notables: Pc-6, Mustang, Taperwing Waco, and we still keep our Mooneys right?

Bummer, I only had that one dealing with them and we were not the one paying the deductible. Hopefully, Falcon will be there if needed.

Falcon-960 on a 50k hull. For what it's worth, Starr was a pleasure to work with after some ground handeling damage was done to an aircraft at work. They were the damaging party's insurer. Cut us a check for everything I expensed out. Including my time to oversee the repairs, charter reimbursement, the works. Our insurance didn't even need to get involved.
