  1. I find the higher I climb the better the fuel economy with no change in KTAS since I fly LOP down low and it will transition to peak or slightly ROP up high. You just need to keep turning up the RPM. I do cross the Sierras and the Rockies and find the performance really nice, I’m sure it’s not turbo nice but I’m really happy with it. When I’m up at 17,500 I see 10.4 gph, 2550 rpm, and 174 ktas. My FF varies from 13.2 gph @ 2400 rpm down low to 10 gph @ 2600 rpm up high at max altitude but my ktas always is around 173 ktas. With the ability to tanker 100 gallons you can see the range can be a real bladder buster.
  2. Nice summary! Seems rediculous we would get lumped into the 737 Max debacle.
  3. Unfortunately 2 dead. https://www.9news.com.au/national/missing-nsw-plane-found-crashed-in-forest/4aec56a4-215c-4cea-844c-05a9eb3659bd
  4. My office that I fly to is in an agricultural area and on a flyway for water fowl. It’s seems like every take off I’m dogging them. I feel that a bird strike is a high probability in my furure. I’ll have to say you hit that goose pretty square. If it didn’t get cut in half it had to have hung on for a bit to make that big of mess!
  5. Yes, it’s really not that loud. We often take a break from our headsets on long trips and talk. Kinda the same noise level as a car with the windows down.
  6. And gas expands at altitude:( luckily the cabins is leaky enough it sucks the smell right out:)
  7. Awesome, congratulations!
  8. The kid pulls them off for a photo and your going say that people treat their dogs better? Most of use take our headsets off while in flight for a period of time. People like you are why I hesitated to share this in the first place and why I wrote what I did. Your an ass!
  9. Your the best Jim! Plus you need to learn how to read.
  10. Thank you! He just turn 1 year and it seemed like the right time to do it.
  11. Our friends daughter hitched a ride with us to see her mom for the weekend. I told her to hold the wheel while to took a photo. She didn’t know I had it on autopilot and was taking her job seriously:)
  12. Jackson went big on his first flight! San Diego to Sun Valley Idaho and he loved it!! Mom was a little worried at first but rapidly relaxed when she saw how much he was enjoying the flight. He refused to keep his headset on and he was very happy once the fasten seat belt light turned off so he could take a look out the window:) 17150312-29E0-4537-BB20-A7043A520048.mov
  13. For me to come close I have to be at 17,500, 9.6 gph and 163 kts. I have AC ducts slowing me down but that is not much of a factor that high.
  14. LyCon! Look at those beautiful ports!!
  15. Glad everyone is safe! That thing is totaled!! I don’t see that getting repaired.
  16. Unless they have done the WAAS upgrade on the G1000 I would pass. Even with WAAS it seems like the G1000 models will continue to have difficulties with avionics upgrades and compatibilities that will be expensive and frustrating. I have the high panel and it only covers the visibility of the top cowl while taxing so you really wouldn’t have better viability anyway. The Ovations have a very nose high attitude on the ground.
  17. After reading enough crash reports it seems like if you make it past the first challenge of surviving the crash you have to deal with the second challenge of surviving the fire. The long bodies have a factory mounted extinguisher behind the passengers feet. I keep a second small extinguisher up front that’s much easier to access and maneuver if needed, especially if trapped!
  18. It’s always awesome getting a flight under your belt that helps increase your comfort level in new places. Share the pictures!
  19. I haven’t flown behind a Lycoming for several years now to recall the details of the fuel system. I used the same technique Mike describe and it alway worked when needed. Im sure the pressurized lines just help purge the air when you went to prime before starting. FWIW I always do hot starts with an open throttle and normal to a little extra prime and it always started on both types of engine for me. When I had my J I only had to do the technique described by Mike if is was really stubborn and that wasn’t very often.
  20. It doesn’t recirculate the fuel but pressurizes the fuel lines pushing the fuel and air out the vent line if I recall.
  21. Pretty awesome! I have been fortunate to have meet several people though this site that I regularly connect with and get together.
  22. Not impossible, you said your UL was 1114 lbs and you just gave an example 1110.68 lbs with gas at 5.82 lbs/gal. A tad below gross and not using your back seats so cabin volume is irrelevant. My fuel reduction to accomplish your same flight profile would make it a wash for UL and I would get there faster. It is apparent we love our respective planes:)
  23. Saddles, coolers, mountain bikes, big game antlers. They all fit in but it would be nice to be able to just through it in and go. I’m not going to change planes over it. I routinely leave my 4th seat out since I rarely fly more than 3 people. Hunting and mountain biking trips both back seats out.
  24. My autopilot comment wasn’t to justify the Mooney’s controls. I’m telling you for long distance and IMC hand flying I prefer the Mooney. I also enjoy the balanced controls of the Bonanza. I don’t consider the tail wag of the V tail to be perfectly harmonized. I will be flying my Kitfox for local flights and pattern work which will be more fun on the controls than both planes. Bonanza’s do have a better baggage door and baggage volume for sure, I’m not denying that. But you have to admit that there are sensitive CG considerations when loading your plane closer to gross. Your plane might have a great CG but generally it is a big conversation with other Bonanza owners. When you put all 270lbs in the back what can you put up front? Bonanza’s and Mooney’s have many amazing attributes. I like both planes and the Mooney currently fits my mission profile. As of now I like the load and go of the Mooney. I just wish I didn’t have to maneuver and manipulate large items into the baggage area.
