John Pleisse Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 So I departed FDK for a quick trip to the coast to check on a property. After lift off, I raised the gear handle and immediately got an aural warning (quick beeps) and a "gear unsafe" light on the annunciator panel. I looked down and the green ball wasn't in the window. I did two fly-bys for Frederick tower to have a look. They told me the nose gear looked "angled backwards". They pulled a file photo on the second fly-by and soften their interpretation. I tried cycling the gear again and got the warning lights and annunciator, except this time I looked down and the green ball was back in the window. I landed uneventfully and thank you Frederick tower. I have owned this a/c almost 15 years and never had a gear problem. Any ideas based on symptoms? Similar experiences? The a/c was towed in recently for pitot-static, altimeter and xponder, but what could they have done to it? (1979 201) Quote
Greg Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 4352H, I had a Cessna 210 for a couple years just so I could learn about gear problems (tongue in cheek). I think the most difficult diagnosis was a bare spot the size of a pin head on one of the wires that went into the gear horn enclosure. The grommet had dried out and split at the bottom of the hole and allowed the wire to rub against the sharp edge of the enclosure. We found it by leaving the master switch on so the horn would sound and simply moving wire bundles around watching for a spark. All done at night in a pitch black hanger - so we could see the spark. I had other problems like micro sensor switches that were out of adjustment and other problems but the little wire deal just wasn't in any trouble shooting guide. good luck Quote
John Pleisse Posted April 25, 2013 Author Report Posted April 25, 2013 My plot is becoming thicker. I suspect the airspeed indicator diaphragm relay switch to the gear override. It is possible it was damaged from over pressure during the pitot-static test. Anybody have this happen? Quote

I haven't had it happen (squat switches on my J) but have read of that probability if the shop doesn't know what they're doing. You should let the shop know and put it back on them... Quote
Marauder Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 I have a mechanical squat switch on my landing gear. I get the same indication when my donuts are really cold and do not expand enough to hit the squat switch. Do you have the gear override switch? If so, you should have been able to push that button and retract it. Quote
AmigOne Posted April 25, 2013 Report Posted April 25, 2013 FWIW I had my airspeed indicator damaged during the last static check. It was an expensive deal for them which included round trip rental car to their shop, 200 miles away from my home. It is a good shop that is way I go that far even for an static check. Quote
John Pleisse Posted April 26, 2013 Author Report Posted April 26, 2013 In a 1979 J Model, is the gear switch on the back of the airspeed indicator or pitot tube? Quote
bnicolette Posted April 26, 2013 Report Posted April 26, 2013 John mine is on the back of the A/S indicator. (1982) Easy to get to or see by lifting the glare shield. 1 Quote
John Pleisse Posted April 26, 2013 Author Report Posted April 26, 2013 B. This is great. I really appreciate the pic. Hope to come to the Burgh sometime soon. JP Quote
