RJBrown Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 There was a screaming sound from behind the panel when we landed Sunday. Did not take time to trouble shoot at that time. Tuesday my son and I went out for a joy ride. On startup the noise returned. Pulled the circuit breaker for the cooling fan and the noise quit. Where is it? Underneath or below the glare shield. Where to get one? Hard to change? Quote
OR75 Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 remove the 2 front seats and get on your back to look under the pannel (avoid hitting the trim wheel) mineis against the wall on the levt hand side ( left foot of the pilot) but look for where the 5/8 scaat ducts are going ( from the radios / gps / loran, etc ... ) to the avionics cooling box most common is the icebox type with 3 outlets. you need to look at what type it is before getting a new one ( from spruce or other) Quote
N601RX Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 Take a look at it before ordering a new one. If its the KA 33 type a drop of oil on the bearings may be all it needs. If its the muffin fan type you will not be able to get the oil to the bearing. Quote
WheelsUp Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 Hello RJ, I've got the same problem, mine is also a 1990 J. I located mine it's just to the right of the pilot's right rudder peddle, on the floor, most of it tucked behind the center console. It's very hard to see where all the screws are to pull it out, especially when you face is 3" from the unit. I have not pulled mine yet, but I have a Globe Motors, part: 19A2790. I just sent out an email a few minutes ago asking for costs on overhaul. We'll see what comes back. Let me know what you find out as well. Thanks, Walter Quote

Thanks, Walter Walter, I was the engineer there at Globe Motors for several years. If you will call the Dothan, Al facility and ask for Bobbie Eldridge she will get you what you need. It may be cheaper to just buy a new one. Their a large company and the repair station is a small part of their business, so if you just sent an an e-mail it may not make to someone who can answer it. jetdriven Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 We put in a Troll Icebox I got off ebay for 60$. It is pretty quiet but kinda on the large side for a Mooney, and I thought we needed 2 radios cooled but turned out we only needed one. They make a smaller one, and if the cost of OH goes over 100$, I'd consider a Troll. Quote
WheelsUp Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 Just spoke with Globe Motors, the costs range from $150 - 1000 depending upon what needs to be replaced. The evaluation will costs you $150. If I use a different manufacture / model, what kind of paper work has to be done ? Walter Quote
N601RX Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 A drop or 2 of oil on the bearing will work wonders for the noise. Would you mind posting a pic of the mounting scheme? Quote
WheelsUp Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 Aeromotors LLC, a third party, will overhaul the unit for $250, with a 2-3 week turn around. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 Wow that is a lot for a single port cooling fan. Id replace with with a more modern design. Troll fans use brushless ball bearing motors. i am sure the others probably do as well. Quote
smccray Posted January 10, 2013 Report Posted January 10, 2013 I dealt with this in the fall of 2011. The Mooney part was very expensive so I went with a unit from Ameriking. The A&P had to fabricate a small bracket to mount the fan, but it's worked okay for the last year. I think there was a thread around here where I asked about the same thing. I'm not sure if it survived the move. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/ak_coolingfans.php Quote
RJBrown Posted January 10, 2013 Author Report Posted January 10, 2013 My 1980 did not come with a fan. It tapped cooling air off the right side vent allowing water in. We added one when we discovered wet radios. By memory it was not a big $$ deal, under $250 total 18 years ago. When I get a chance to check it I will and report. This week has been in the mid 50s but the weekend looks bad. They are talking about the Broncos/Ravens game being the coldest Bronco home game ever. High in the teens. Looks like Spruce has 10 different units from $117 and up. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/search/search.php?s=AVIONICS+FAN&x=0&y=0 Thanks for the info Randy Quote
