triple8s Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 I was looking through TAP and saw this: http://www.trade-a-plane.com/detail/1572387.html What do they mean by Bravo conversion? Did it get a FWF change from a TCM to the LYC?
gjkirsch Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 On pre 1996 models, the original engine did not have "wet heads". They experienced early cylinder wear. There was a modification offered that basically replaced the cylinders with the current generation. It became standard in 1996 and the name was changed at the same time to Bravo from TLS. FWIW, I test flew that plane years ago.
John Pleisse Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 Early TSIO 540 engines suffered cylinder damage because of oil drain off. This was a problem on early TLS 's. The fix was the famous wet-head conversion and thus the Bravo was born. All of the early TLS should have already been converted. People tout Bravo conversion times like TSOH.
carqwik Posted October 20, 2012 Report Posted October 20, 2012 The "wet head" was needed to cool the exhaust valves that were prematurely failing IIRC.I don't believe the problem was with the cylinders themselves although a failed exhaust valve would cause a cylinder problem I suppose.
RJBrown Posted October 21, 2012 Report Posted October 21, 2012 Research and development at customers expense. All TLS should have already been converted to Bravo spec. If not don't buy or deduct the cost.
FoxMike Posted October 21, 2012 Report Posted October 21, 2012 Triple8s I owned a TLS for nine years. The wet head is one of the best things that Lycoming ever thought up. Much better altitude engine than the Continental.
Awful_Charlie Posted October 21, 2012 Report Posted October 21, 2012 It means it got all new cylinders and a bunch of extra pipework, in this case at around 400 hours, so the jugs only have about 800hrs on them

There is a good reason Mooney followed Rocket to the Continental. My next plane will be a Rocket. 1990 J 1850 tt 0 SMOH for sale.
