William Munney Posted Sunday at 07:19 PM Report Posted Sunday at 07:19 PM Anyone know where i can find new or nearly knew fairings for the taxi/landing light lense on the Ovations? The exterior aluminum part around the taxi/ landing light location Mine are old and all dinged up. Running without them now. Thanks all. Quote
exM20K Posted Sunday at 07:47 PM Report Posted Sunday at 07:47 PM Great Lakes Aero Products makes most of this stuff. https://www.aircraftwindshieldstore.com/aircraft-parts/mooney/m20r/29-0465-up/ if you have the leading edge landing/taxi lights, they will trim and drill to fit if you send in your old ones. otherwise, it can be a bit of work. -dan Quote
TangoTango Posted Sunday at 08:10 PM Report Posted Sunday at 08:10 PM I think some around here have claimed a speed benefit to running without them. The aluminum trim piece is pretty bulky, and on a critical part of the airfoil. I'm still running with mine attached, but they haven't given me a reason to come off yet. Maybe when I polish the cloudy plexiglass... Quote
NickG Posted Sunday at 08:58 PM Report Posted Sunday at 08:58 PM My aluminum has a crack that has been stop drilled. would love to get rid of it and go with a one piece all plexi. Quote

As has been mentioned Great Lakes (or @OSUAV8TER, one of their dealers) for the lenses. I would highly recommend sending your old lens to Great Lakes to have them trim it to the old lens since these are hand made airplanes. You can get rid of the aluminum trim around the lenses. Mooney got rid of it in the early 2000's. It looks much better. Use countersunk washers and don't tighten the screws too tightly. Quote
OSUAV8TER Posted Sunday at 11:31 PM Report Posted Sunday at 11:31 PM I can't trim them but I do carry replacements. If you send to Great Lakes they are running 2-3 weeks for manufacturing. https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/Mooney_c_262.html <-- Link to my website Quote
William Munney Posted Sunday at 11:38 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 11:38 PM (edited) My lenses are fine. It’s the aluminum around them that’s ratty. I know they got rid of them in the newer models but on a TKS airplane there is a difference in height of the leading edge between the TKS cuff and the taxi/landing light lense with no aluminum around it. Not a big deal Lance? I need every knot on the TKS wing. Edited Sunday at 11:39 PM by William Munney Quote

The vendor has only a single part number, and the TKS install shouldn’t be different. I’m due for a replacement as both are etched into opacity on the top third of the radius. I just wish I knew ahead of time when I will have a few weeks of downtime. -dan Quote

Schllc Posted Monday at 12:20 PM Report Posted Monday at 12:20 PM All you need to replace these lenses is a belt sander mounted on its side, a sharpie, some tine snips, blue tape and some patience. The snips get you close, then sand the rest of the way. I did the two on my plane recently, and it took me less than three hours to do both. one tip, drill one hole at a time after they are sized. Place the screw and mark/remove/drill/replace for each screw. It’s tedious, but I didn’t do that on the first one and I had to waddle two of the holes to make them fit. Fortunately it was small enough for the head of the screw to cover my error. do. It be intimidated by this job, it is not difficult, just make sure you have the tools. Trying to sand without a belt sander will make this a LOT harder. Quote
