Has anyone done an overhaul recently on a J and care to elaborate on the total cost?

R&R cost?

Shop used?

Other equipment changed during the process?

The engine itself it going to be nearly 40K, and some shops will be over that.  Then the rest.

“the rest” can be significant.  A Mooney owner at Fullerton posted these costs in addition to the cost of the engine overhaul early last year:

  • Freight to/from                               $ 2,580
  • Prop Overhaul                                $ 3,873
  • Governor Overhaul                        $    880
  • Oil Cooler Overhaul                       $    554
  • Misc Parts                                      $  1,683
  • Labor                                              $  7,345

If they find issues with your exhaust (likely) then add about another $2,500 -3,000 for repair and freight.

That adds about another $20,000 on top of just the bare engine overhaul cost. So maybe $60,000 all in….give or take a few thousands.  If you go with a Factory OH or Rebuild add the appropriate delta on top.

@mikey757  The standard oil/fuel hoses, if aged and stiff, could add a another $thousand or so.  Don’t know what Teflon ones above cost.

Some replace the throttle cable depending on age.

Also once the engine and engine mount frame is off, it is not uncommon to discover some corrosion on the engine frame. The tubulars are thin and tolerances are extremely small. You may want it powder coated if repaired. Shipping and repair can add up to another couple $thousand.

In an earlier discussion someone said that they don’t like to total it all up because it is too depressing ….

Base IO-360-A3B6 OH cost (March 2024) was $40k plus or minus $1-2k (based on at least 8 shops I got quotes from).  That assumes reusing basically everything and OH’d cylinders.  Standard turnaround time 14-18 weeks plus or minus.

I opted for a new camshaft and new (PMA) cylinders, plus freight and a couple minor extras.  $48k for the engine shop altogether.  Paid to expedite and got it in 4 weeks.

I spent $14k on the rest… removing and reinstalling the engine, new everything (mounts, hoses, etc), overhauling my governor, etc etc etc.

I replaced all the control cables, they were original and I thought 40 years was enough.

New alternator, refurbished all the baffling, just flushed the oil cooler since it had been replaced, repainted the engine mount. Some work I did myself to lessen the cost.

I also had prop overhauled.

I had to replace the case because it was cracked, probably because PO installed a non approved 130 amp alternator.

I didn’t keep track of the all the costs, but it was close to 40k.

Zephyr did mine, I didn’t have to pay shipping because I was close enough for them to send a guy to pick it up. And being Florida there was no sales tax.

@Ryan ORL curious what shop you used that got it done so fast? That’s a compelling reason to pick

Certified Engines Unlimited in South Florida.  $1500 expedite fee.  To be fair they only promise 8 weeks for that but they got it done in 4.
