Hello Mooney Friends,

We recently sold our ‘68F, and we’re looking for a needle in a haystack - an M20R or M20S with a UL of 1050lbs or more.  Likely that will mean no TKS or O2, although either of those options would be useful to me if the aircraft has 1050lbs UL.  A/C is not required for us.

My main mission is family summertime trips around the pacific northwest.  I also fly from KSFF-KCXP (525nm) 4 or 5 times each year to visit family.  That’s the basis for 1050UL.  60 gallons of gas total (for the trip plus an hour reserve), -570lbs for me, wife, kids(forecasting my kid’s weight for the next few years), 120lbs in baggage (100lbs bags plus 20lbs aircraft stuff). That’s where I get the 1050 UL requirement.

I’m also happy to consider aircraft that are close and could possibly get there with some modifications (removing vacuum systems, old avionics, etc).

Thanks to anyone who might have some leads!

I own N132MA which is a 2001 Eagle 2 that sits at 1026lbs of useful load.  My Eagle 2 has not had the Screaming Eagle conversion.  I see where N131MA appears to  be  on the market.  It’s also a 2001 Eagle 2 with TKS and the Screaming Eagle conversion.  It has a stated useful of 900lbs which I’m curious of.  I may be wrong, but I’m wondering if the useful load was updated after the conversion because even with TKS, I would think the useful would be slightly north of 1000 lbs (because of the conversion).

Yes, I saw that pop up today and was surprised to see the 900UL.  Ill try to get in touch with the seller and see if it was updated.

Your Eagle sounds like it will easily be over 1100UL with the 310hp stc!

I live on the western side of the Cascades, but if you are in this area, or I make another work trip to KSFF, you can see my 310HP STC Ovation with FIKI.   For us, it was a great family hauler solution, better than hoped... long body for space, 310 HP STC for useful load, and FIKI for increased dispatch rate.

I was not aware of a UL upgrade for 280 to 310hp.
is this something for the 240hp eagle to 310?

neither the ovation nor the acclaim get any boost of UL with the 310 upgrade.

My Eagle was originally 244 HP and MTOW of 3200 lb.  It got the first Minnis STC to 280HP and MTOW did not change.  I did the 310 HP STC and it increases the MTOW to 3368 lb.  I think Ovation may already be at 3368 MTOW so no increase (just guessing).

Yes, in researching it, the MGW for the Eagle changes exactly as you stated.  No change with the 280hp stc, but the 310hp stc increases the MGW TO 3368lbs.  The Ovation already has that 3368lb MGW, so no increase with the 310hp stc.

Phew, getting all the way to 1050 UL sounds tough!

I have a 310HP STC'd 2000 Ovation, and I recently took out all the vacuum--primary and standby--replacing it with an Aspen PFD. I'm right at 1030 UL now. I imagine 1050 would be doable by removing the O2 system, but...well, I like to fly up high! :)

Awesome!  Do you know what UL you were at before the upgrade?

Honestly, I need to be a little flexible too… in adding up the weights i included the portable oxygen equipment we’ve been using in our F because I like to fly up high too!  Surprisingly, the portable oxygen gear isn’t that heavy (we have a 2 person portable D cylinder and a 2 person oxygen generator).  I think it was around 15lbs total.

Maybe look at a 252 converted to Encore spec.  I am at 1061 UL.  That includes the built in O2 system.

Oh, and I cruise at 10 GPH (175 KTAS at altitude) so the UL goes further. :D

I found my W&B from before the Aspen upgrade and removal of the primary & standby vacuum pumps, and the UL was 1012, so I gained 18 pounds, to 1030.

Thanks!  That’s pretty much the best I would expect and that really helps me get an idea of what I could gain.  Thank you!

I say ground ship a box to KCXP a week before you go and cut down your baggage requirements.  That will open up a lot of other potential aircraft.

For the shorter PNW trips, obviously you'll need less fuel, so more in baggage.
