cmkep Posted February 5, 2024 Report Posted February 5, 2024 My 1964 M20E has an incorrect front baffle support. Can some one send be a photo of the part installed on their airplane. In particular, I cannot tell where that aft end of the support mounts. the part is #8 in this picture. I wonder if the part was removed when the generator was replaced with an alternator. Thank you
takair Posted February 6, 2024 Report Posted February 6, 2024 I don’t recall that on my 64. I think the 64 had some rather unique variations since it was the first year for the fuel injected engine. Notice that the page above starts with a 65.
cmkep Posted February 6, 2024 Author Report Posted February 6, 2024 The 64 parts manual has the same part. I grabbed the 65 drawing from another post. dog house baffle 64.pdf
takair Posted February 6, 2024 Report Posted February 6, 2024 Hmm..so it is. I have a ton of pictures, but none of them show that area. I have an alternator and starter that both modified that area, but I dont recall that brace. The ram air box also comes up in that area, so it either hides that brace or….
Skates97 Posted February 6, 2024 Report Posted February 6, 2024 Mine was missing it too which allowed the bottom part of the baffle to slip out of the groove it should sit in. I made one out of a piece of aluminum, rock solid now. I went through pictures but can't find one of it. I'll be at the airport tomorrow and will take a picture. It was there with the generator and still there with the alternator.
Skates97 Posted February 8, 2024 Report Posted February 8, 2024 It's just straight aluminum 1/2" by I think 1/8". Twisted to go from the lower cowl to the back of the baffle support. Utilized existing holes in both the lower cowl and baffle support. I had ordered the actual brace from LASAR but couldn't figure out how/where it mounts so talked with my IA and put this in instead. It is solid and doesn't allow the baffle support to move back which it had been doing prior and would allow the lower baffle to slip out of the groove it is supposed to sit in. 1
cmkep Posted February 8, 2024 Author Report Posted February 8, 2024 Thanks for the pictures. My airplane had a similar bracket but it was on the other side. The bracket broke, was replaced, and broke again. I think the problem is that the inner cowl (Dog House) moves with the engine and the Lower / front cowl does not. It seems inappropriate to connect somethin rigid from the moving engine to the fixed cowl. Your bracket is twisted and looks like it would flex in the direction that the engine shakes. My bracket was such that it cracked after not many hours. I did not take pictures of the old bracket. Ill try to take a picture of the new bracket, not that it is correct. -Charlie
