blaine beaven Posted August 14, 2023 Report Posted August 14, 2023 Hello all, I have a 1978 M20J with an IO360-A3B6 engine. I have ordered a JPI EDM 830 engine monitor. My shop gave me a form to fill out with parameters; one of them is “Gallons per hour at takeoff”. I currently do not have a fuel flow gauge (just fuel PSI). I could not find this information in my POH, or the Lycoming Operators Manual. JPI asks for it to set as a limitation when programming the parameters. Does anyone know what the number is? Thanks! Pinecone Posted August 14, 2023 Report Posted August 14, 2023 1 GPH per 10 HP is a good target. So 20 GPH to start. Once installed, you can change any of the 830 settings that you like. FYI, the Tach Time setting is 2500 RPM for 1 to 1 time. Quote
anthonydesmet Posted August 14, 2023 Report Posted August 14, 2023 As Pinecone stated you will be able to adjust settings on the 830 when you have it installed. To set your expectations and since you do not have an EM or fuel flow at the moment, setting up your new one will take some flying and tweaking. It will all be explained in the manual but you will have to dial in your K-factor. If you had a fuel flow transducer currently installed there would probably be K-factor written on the back of the fuel flow transducer. JPI may write it on the back off of your 20gph answer. However when you start flying with your 830 on the first few flights you will want to keep track of actual fuel used (so plan on filling up your airplane to same level and parked in same spot able) to track actual fuel used compared to what your 830 says your fuel was used. It will probably initially be off so you will have to adjust the K-factor setting in your new EDM. Again - all in the JPI-830 manual but just a heads up you will have to do some tweaking once installed. Quote
blaine beaven Posted August 14, 2023 Author Report Posted August 14, 2023 Thanks for the responses. The installer spoke to JPI and they said that value is not critical or a limitation, so as noted I will have to figure it out once I get it installed. Blaine Quote
kortopates Posted August 14, 2023 Report Posted August 14, 2023 You don’t want such a limitation as there is none. Only fuel related limitation is for fuel pressure. This is situational awareness only anyway with the 830.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Aerodon Posted August 14, 2023 Report Posted August 14, 2023 I think the issue is that JPI have three fuel flow transducers and want to make sure that the smallest one (201?) is OK with the maximum fuel flow at takeoff. You can look in the lycoming manual for your engine, they usually have the max full rich fuel flow. I don't think you will be far wrong with 25 or 30GPH. (this value is not entered as an alarm anywhere on the 830. EDM900/930, it is if its in the AFM. Don Quote
