1)  Does anyone know of an LED bulb for the rear position light?  Or just everyone just install the Orion (or similar) combined tail light and strobe in the rudder and not use the tipt lights?

2)  Had anyone repaired, or know of someone who repairs the tip lens (clear cover)?  My 252 had the recognition lights left on at some point in its life and the cover is slightly rippled.  Not a lot, but it annoys me. :D

It seems that if you got two good lenses, you could make a form to reshape a warped one back to near new.

It might be easier to just replace the lens. The OEM for the lenses is Great Lakes Aero Products. LASAR had some in stock a while back at the old price, so you might try them.

Mooney used a couple of different bulbs for the rear 28V wingtip position lights. If you have the A508 wedge base bulb, Aero-Lites makes an LED replacement. If you have the older bi-pin bulb you will need to replace the socket with an A507 socket to accept the A508 bulb.

Keep in mind that if you replace ALL the nav lights with LEDs, the landing gear annunciator will be dim all the time unless you modify the circuit in some way.

1) There is a thread for the rear facing white wing tip light… somewhat recently…

2) Wing tip lenses for the front corner are available through plane plastics… installing them is usually a trim and fit situation…

3) New LED recog lights have just been announced by Whelen this month… find @OSUAV8TER to get on the list before changing out the meltable acrylic lens….

Pp thought sonly…

I found the thread on the rear facing tip lights.  And for an 86 252, it seems I would have to change the socket to get the LEDs in.

What exactly is the wiring change for the gear light?

Yeah, I priced the tip covers from GLAP, $274 each.  They aren't warped that badly. :D

Already have my deposit in on the LED recog lights.

The plan is, to replace the original nav/stobes with the Whelan Orions.

I replaced my right rear position light with an LED. It barely fit. The hardest part was getting the clear cover to break free from the sealant without damaging it or dropping on the floor.
where are you getting the LED recog lights from? I couldn’t find them on the whelan website.

IIRC, one of the nav LED's would have to be installed in parallel with a resistor to allow more current through when on, but that's a fuzzy memory :) . @PT20J, I'm assuming some of the Whelen lights like the Orions have that internally, since my landing gear light works like normal?

For those too lazy to search:

https://mooneyspace.com/topic/41397-wingtip-rear-position-light-replacement-question/

I considered replacing them, but...mine are really sealed in there, don't think it will contribute much positively, and as @PT20J mentioned, I wasn't looking to degrade something that I DO use...

Are you something like the good soul around here in this forum?. Thanks.
For now I will put my money into the essentials, as much as I would love to have LED‘s all around. (I did that in my old cars). But: First things first.

I don’t know if any LEDs mimic the incandescents or not. The gear dimming circuit takes advantage of the fact that the voltage drop across an incandescent bulb is near zero when the current is very low and 28V when the current is high enough for the bulb to illuminate. It might be possible to place a shunt resistor in the nav light circuit to allow near full illumination of the gear light depending on the LED impedance. The trick would be to find the right resistance. Too high and the gear light will not be full brightness with the nav lights off. Too low and you’re going to need a big heat sink for it when the nav lights are on. Some sort of active circuit or a relay might be the better choice. A relay is probably easier to get signed off as a minor modification.

Hmm, ok, maybe the first thing is for me to check it when I'm out at the hangar next.  The gear light is definitely bright enough to see during the daytime, I'll see what happens when I turn the night lights on...

Check with Gallagher.

He worked on Whelan to get them made.  And had to buy something like 100.

He is taking orders with a small deposit ($47).  Delivery supposedly before the end of the year
