I need to have my hangar elf replace acouple of my CHT probes (JPI- K type). I have used the cheapo variety (around $25) in the past, and I seem to have them needing replacement fairly often. The ones from JPI run around $110 or so. I see where Aircraft Spruce carries some thermocouple type for around $100 as well. Does anyone have any experience that says there is a real difference and whether the higher price ones are any better?

I have the "higher" priced ones (stock JPI installation kit), not sure if they are any better but they have lasted longer than 7 years in my plane so far.

I was going to say the same thing.  Mine were installed in 2012 and still going (~700 hrs).  They are just now starting to get a little noisy.

Mine go underneath in the well below the continental cylinders. On cyl #2 its a gasket probe at the well combined with the stock CHT probe (it used to be at the spark plug but Greg at Advanced Aircraft switched to the well and kept the stock one).

My JPI CHT probes (the bayonet type) have been in the plane for 24 years and 3000 hours, used the same probes after the engine overhaul.  Only ever replaced one EGT probe.

The spark plug gasket ones wear out.  The cylinder pocket ones last forever if you protect the wires.  I install the EGT probes 'pointing inwards' so all the wires are out of the way, then even the EGT probes last over 1000 hours.

Same.
