I have a CB labeled GMU11 as well… I was guessing that’s the power for the GMU11.  Why wouldn’t the G5 keep receiving magnameter data if the gmu has power?

Ive got to go pull all those breakers.

If you lose the avionics bus or all power the GMU won't have power.   The G5(s) will continue to run on their batteries.

Ironic -- my 275's just hit their "392 day" expiration for performing the battery capacity test over the last couple of weeks.  It was pretty straight forward.  The good news was the the 275's tell you that it's due.

1.  Master switch on with the knob depressed to go into configuration mode.
2.  Roll over to Calibration/Test page.  Then go to the battery page
3.  Select Test -- check the "checklists", then go to start.
4.  Test starts when you turn off the master switch
5.  Then just let it run until the batteries deplete.

My guess is that if it runs for an hour or more, it calls it good.

Finally I had to run with the master switch on for a couple of hours on external power to recharge the back up batteries.

Just the internal.

I enabled the internal on mine as well.  It “should” use the input from the 430W primarily, but the internal gets solid gps signal as well.

Tested the G5s today on a very long cross country.  Pulled the CBs on the G5s.  Both indicated almost ~5 hours remaining at first.  I left them on battery power just to see how they would draw down.  Took this picture after 2 hours without power.  They are pretty darn good for 2017 batteries - (2:40+ remaining!)

sorry about pdf, but the picture thing is killing me.

And yes, I was cruising at 116kts.  It was a horrendous 525 miles into 25kts+ hw the whole way.  Only way to make it with all 4 of us and baggage without a stop was lean of peak which worked great.  Best part is, i get at least a 10kt hw home on Monday.

5 years on those batteries! I think that is about the time Garmin say as to replace them…

The G5 ICA in the Maint Manual only requires replacement when the battery fails the annual capacity check.

...and we (Part 91 Mooney operators) are not even bound by the ICA, except for approved airworthiness limitations sections.

No chance, don’t fall for it. Plan for the forecasted wind to change to headwind again. Lol

Question for @Ragsf15e or @EricJ-

How do you “enable” the G5 internal gps, but have it use the external WAAS signal primarily?

Thanks

Yes, no doubt… it’s already forecast as a headwind.  I was being sarcastic which doesn’t come through that well.  Headwinds both ways on 500nm xc with 2 six year olds… I must have made Daedalus mad!

I read through the manual, and it’s pretty cryptic, but it seems to indicate that it will use an external waas source as primary if both are enabled and valid.

Fyi, in certified applications, it’s supposed to have some type of external antenna, but it works fine with the internal in many airplanes.

After talking with a Gamrin engineer about this I learned that they look at the GPS quality metrics and use the GPS which provides the best metrics.  That way it for some reason the external GPS goes to crap, it will automatically start using the internal one.
