Hello,

I got some bad news today.

One of the engine mount frame tubes has a crack in it.

Is there anyway to weld or replace without having to pull the engine.

You really don't want anyone welding with the engine mount still on the airframe. Plus personally I wouldn't settle for anything less than replacing the cracked tube section; although typically other options are possible. It's not a big deal to lift the engine, pull the engine mount, repair and refinish to like new. Then rehang with new engine mounts and hardware if desired.

What caused the crack? YesThey don't usually crack on their own.

Depending on where it is cracked there is a service bulletin out on the older engine mounts.  I had to replace mine when it cracked in the exact spot the SB said it would.

Yes, mine did it at the same place on the bulletin.

What company did you use to replace.

Repair vs. replace…

You might consider going with a preflown part for that…

My M20C broke two welds off the pilot side lower engine mount….  Leaving the engine hanging by three bolts in place of four…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic or parts sales guy…

Send it to Laser. The best Mooney tube welders out there.

I had a cracked mount about 30 years ago. I sent it to Laser and it came back looking like new.

I purchased a used one that already had the modifications done to it.  I got it from @Alan Fox here on Mooneyspace.com.

It is very common for them to crack on thier own ,

Mooney SB 175 & &192 as well as the AD applies to engine mounts.

A good opportunity to have the engine mount sent out and OH’d…

Cleaned, inspected, checked for cracks, like new when done…

Often considered post ground strike, as the mount supplies the equal and opposite force to whatever the engine experienced…

I assume just the vintage ones; especially before the reinforcement SB? Don't see this on the modern Mooney's.

Pre J , J and later are counterbalanced and reinforced..

I would have the prop balanced if you have cracked baffling or mount. Could be a sign your engine is out of balance.

prop balancing is not what affects the mount , it is harmonic balance , Thats why the repair , is a reinforcement....

I recently got mine back from AWI in Minnesota. Took almost two months to the day to get it done but came back looking great.

BK,

What did you have done there?  Is that an OH of the mount?

Essentially it is an overhaul of the mount. They removed the old paint, inspected the entire mount, repaired one section that had been damaged (probably by a tie wrap), added an approved beef up kit and refinished it with the color of my choice. AWI was in the process of moving to a new location which impacted their turnaround time. The two month time frame really didn’t impact me as I did this during my engine overhaul, which has been a four+ month project.

That's exactly what I did when I got my Mooney. While doing some engine work the A&P noticed one of the brackets was not right. I told him to send the engine mount to OH. 17 microfractures later and new rubbers thingy, it came back like new with the yellow tag (~$700)...I'm glad I did it. Highly recommended if you are doing work on your engine. My 2c.

Same place where I sent mine a few years ago. Good job.

I took advantage of the great visit to do a penetrant check of mine, which had already been strengthened according to the SB in 1986.
