Jeev Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Hello - Well it has come time to paint 1YG so she goes to ArtCraft in Santa Maria as soon as I get my new windows delivered. I have narrowed it down to two schemes / colors and have decided about 95% on the one with Black / White / Tan / Grey stripes but still like the Ovation scheme. I am looking for your opinions. My aircraft is a 78 J with tan leather interior so I definitly want some tan to match on the outside. I have attached the two finalists. Thanks, Sanjeev Quote
jetdriven Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I like the scheme on the left but done in red with silver or gray accents. but thats just me Take a look at Jezzie's plane. Its similar i think. Quote
alex Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I can't bring myself to say the "left" is better so I will just say that the one with black, white and gold looks very sharp! Quote

carusoam Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Jeev, The wheels down one is classic Ovation. The wheels up one looks more modern. Are you a steam gauge guy or a glass cockpit guy? Best regards, -a- Quote

Jeev Posted October 4, 2011 Author Report Posted October 4, 2011 I agree with all you guys!! The "wheels up one" it is Quote
orangemtl Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Agree that the black 'n white is the most appealing of the two. That will be a very sharp aircraft! There's something very enjoyable about painting your aircraft: probably the most enjoyable part of buying my plane in '09. I used the factory BMW scheme as a basis, but modified it substantially. I enjoy knowing that there's no plane in the world that looks just like it. Considering how much these things cost to purchase and feed, it's hard not to want your aircraft to be a personal statement. Make sure to share photos of the finished product with us, alongside the original proposed scheme! Quote
carusoam Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Jeeves, http://flightaware.com/photos/view/1210-e374990594801c9d4eb3b24a722760ff30fb3536/aircrafttype/M20P/sort/date/page/2 N201XG I fell across this one this evening. Similar to what you have in mind? Best regards, -a- Quote
aerobat95 Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 Either one is a winner but I would say my favorite is the one on the left. But whichever way you go you will have a really nice looking plane. How long is it going to take the paint shop to do your Mooney? Quote
aerobat95 Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I will say I like your old paint job....looks very similar to mine :-) I personally love the green as you dont see to many with it.... Quote
KSMooniac Posted October 4, 2011 Report Posted October 4, 2011 I like the first/left one as well because I'm not a fan of the "vertical" color edge covering the entire vertical stabilizer when it swoops up from the fuselage. The scheme on the right has a nice, graceful curve and then it gets bludgeoned during the transition and it doesn't work well IMO. I'd suggest working with a professional scheme designer. Fantom and I have used the same guy with great success and very modest cost compared to another scheme design company that you might have seen in AOPA and elsewhere. PM me for details if you'd really like to iterate with your ideas and come up with something unique and personal! Quote
RJBrown Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 As I searched Mooney pictures for paint ideas I found this one. The tail treatment gives a little more "motion" to the look than your choice. The total tail paint on the Ovation looks too heavy to me. This scheme is kind of in between the two you showed and I like it. When I painted my Rocket years ago no one was using curved lines. I really like the new curved lines. The one on the left looks like a modern and fresh update of my old Rocket. Quote
rbridges Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 are they charging any more for the "curved" paint scheme vs. "straight edged"? Quote
jetdriven Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 I've seen plenty of "curved" paint schemes that were a series of short straight lines. I don't think you would have that problem at Art Craft but some shops cannot do it properly. Quote
rbridges Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 btw, I agree about the one on the left, but I like the maroon color scheme. Quote

jax88 Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 I really like that wheels up version. I may have to start embezzling funds from checking to a secret "paint" account Quote

orangemtl Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 It's nice to see pilots choosing, or designing more 'active' and vivid paint schemes. Somehow, it seems that owners have all too often been as conservative with paint as we are (understandably) with new and 'improved' engine or control systems. Me: I wanted my favorite color, and I always liked the paint schemes you will see on military trainers (T28, T2, etc.) Hence, the admittedly garish scheme of my plane. Also, I rcognize that for those planning on moving up from plane A to plane B one day, you don't necessarily want plane A to look like a circus tent, or with a picture of your wife and kids on the tail, or whatever if you plan on selling it. It's your pride and joy---live a little! Whichever you choose will look great. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Hi Jeev. Based on my experience with ArtCraft [ our two Mooneys painted by them ], if you deliver an excellent photo of your scheme to them, they will recreate it as depicted in the picture. Tony, the painter/scheme layout person, is a natural artist with his craft. He is truly a gentle soul willing to put his heart into your plane. You are even invited into the shop area when the layout is being performed to assist if you wish. Teresa [owner of ArtCraft] will assist you in helping to make sure the colors you chose will be compatible with not only your desires, but with the interior and the overall pleasing look of the final product. Do discuss with them your time frame and they will certainly accommodate you. You will be most delighted with this family run business and their desire to make you completely happy. Quote
mooneygirl Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Our friend Bob Keller has a 1976 F model and wanted to have a stars and stripes type of feel for his plane. He mocked up several versions and took them to ArtCraft. They put the design on the plane, and then worked with him [all part of the price] to find the exact scheme he wanted. Teresa was particularly helpful with the placement of the stars on the tail. This is annoying but I cannot seem to get the photos to attach to this post. I will put them in my gallery. As some of you know, I have a custom paint scheme on my E model. I simply looked at others I liked and then incorporated the design elements. I used one of our Mooney coloring sheets for the kids and took it to Tony and Teresa. The result was just spectacular. In my opinion there is no need to spend a lot of money on a professional scheme, when their help is included in the price. I will load photos into my gallery since I cannot get them to add here. MooneyMitch Posted October 5, 2011 Report Posted October 5, 2011 Quote: fantom True, when you have such a close relationship with a good nearby paint shop that has that type of talent, but it's not the case for many of us in other parts of the country, and professional assistance is probably less than 5% of the cost of painting.
