721lp Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Guys, I have an Edo-Aire HSI and the glideslope flag will not "unflag". I talked to one repair facility and they wanted to do a full overhaul to the tune of almost 4,000. It was just o'hauled about 3 years ago with not a lot of hours on it. Any suggestions for a RELIABLE, honest repair shop that will only repair the problem and not try to take me for a ride....? Jimmy
KSMooniac Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Aerolab (Robert Bramble) also has a great reputation: Aerolab Aviation Services Inc.1227 Dakota St. Leavenworth, KS 66048 Phone: 913-680-1275
N9937c Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 I just sent a King hsi into AEROLAB for a GS problem. Had it back in a week for ~ $400. This guy Bramble is magic. He has also moved to Florida. Email is robert@aerolabaviation.com have another phone 913 680 4169
721lp Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 I just talked to Bob Bramble on the phone and he said my problem was probably just a dirty movement in the GS flag. He seems like a very knowledgable guy and honest. Thanks for the references.....
Piloto Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 Take the HSI indicator out of the panel and shake it by hand several times. It will likely solve the problem. I found this works for half the gyro/indicators problems. José
721lp Posted May 4, 2009 Author Report Posted May 4, 2009 Jose, I will try that first.....but gently, hahah
721lp Posted May 5, 2009 Author Report Posted May 5, 2009 Sent HSI to Bob Bramble yesterday........will report when I get it back.....
721lp Posted May 11, 2009 Author Report Posted May 11, 2009 Bob called yesterday and said that the meter movements needed cleaning, that was all.....$250 + shipping.......I'm pleased, so far. Will report on the HSI when I get it back in the plane.......
eaglebkh Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 How does this stuff get dirty? Aren't these things well contained?
721lp Posted May 11, 2009 Author Report Posted May 11, 2009 Since I work in INDUSTRIAL instrumentation, I feel i can answer this question. Over time, small dust particles and general wear of the jeweled movement will generate enough dirt to cause problems in ANY mechanical meter movement. I see this almost every day. It is becoming more rare though, thanks to solid-state equipment......meaning LCD dispalys with no moving parts. But, as long as we have mechanical movements, this will always be a problem....
721lp Posted May 15, 2009 Author Report Posted May 15, 2009 Well, guys......Bob Bramble worked his magic on my HSI. All works beautifully, and for $299. A lot less than I was quoted from a few places, who claimed that if they opened it up, it had to be overhauled to the tune of 3k. I would wholeheartedly recommend him for any instrument problems.
721lp Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 Jose'.....I was afraid that a good shake might have cost me more than I could afford....hahah
721lp Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 How in the world did that get in there 3 times?????
721lp Posted June 25, 2009 Author Report Posted June 25, 2009 Well, guys, as luck would have it, my good old Edo-Aire HSI had another problem after i got it back from Bob Bramble. He fixed the sticky G/S flag, but then the CDI was binding on the gyro. So, I called Bob and he said send it back to him, which I did. He found some problems in the gyro so he sent it to a friend of his in Texas. He is overhauling it for about half what the "west coast" shops wanted , plus a 1 year warranty. Still costs 1395.00. But that's better than the 4k price I was quoted from the other guys. I will let you know more when I get it back in the plane probably this weekend.
The-sky-captain Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 Sorry to hear that. It's quite a pain to shell out all that cash only to find it wasn't the only problem. Good luck with it!
721lp Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 HSI reinstalled.....smooth as silk now.
721lp Posted July 15, 2009 Author Report Posted July 15, 2009 Ohhh.....by the way, Bob Bramble sent it at his cost to Georgetown Instruments, Taylor ,Tx.......the guys there are good..
Alan Fox Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 I think the dust gets in because this is a vacuum gyro....Also i think this is the same as a sigma tek 1u445 and will not work with the garmin avionics... Had one and couldnt understand why it wouldnt work w the garmin...Until I spoke to garmin... Replaced it with a Sandel 3308 ...
721lp Posted October 26, 2009 Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 Mine works with my GNS430. I'm not sure about Sigma-Tek.
