Hi there,

I am looking at a potential partnership in a Mooney M20J in the Seattle area and was wondering if there are any Mooney-specific specialists in the area who can do a pre-buy inspection. The airplane is currently going through its annual so timing would be perfect. Any recommendations appreciated.

Thank you,

Shawn

Welcome aboard, Shawn.

While you are waiting for a knowledgeable response...

Have you checked the list of MSCs available on the Mooney website... the list was recently updated but not complete, last I looked...

Hi Shawn:  I used Greg Lehman at Advanced Aircraft at TTD for the pre-buy on my Bravo.  I would use him again in the future and he does the majority of my maintenance.  I'm not a tax attorney but there may also be a WA use tax advantage in taking final delivery of the aircraft in Oregon then flying it to KDLS for first use in WA as Klickitat County has a very low sales/use tax rate.

Advanced Aircraft is the nearest MSC AFAIK--I'm not sure if there's one up in the Seattle area.  Their rates are higher than average, but not ridiculous and they obviously know Mooney's more than most places in the region.

FYI, there is no sales tax in OR, so none is collected on sales.  When you flew it back to WA, you would have to pay use tax for vehicles at that time.

Over the years few MSCs in WA closed.

Command aviation at KNLI is now MSC but I have no experience with them. Where is the plane located and who is doing the annual?

Good luck.

I was contemplating getting a partnership in the Mooney at Galvin (N1021K) for flying at reduced costs than rental prices. The annual is being done at Cornerstone Aviation LLC (http://cornerstoneaviationllc.com/) at Auburn, WA (S50).

I have 2 concerns but not sure how critical they are. Wondering if you guys have any thoughts on it.

  1. students use this aircraft to get their complex endorsement
  2. the aircraft is parked outside (not hangered) here in the PNW

After doing the math, I would make up for the partnership cost in ~3 years compared to if I kept renting the plane from them.

Thanks for the welcome. Nope didn't lookup the MSCs as I was wondering if there are folks independent of MSCs that can do a pre-buy inspection (heard there were folks, but not sure). Looks like the 2 nearby ones are:

  1. Advanced Aircraft Services LLC (Troutdale, OR)
  2. Command Aviation (Bellingham, WA)

as PDXBravo and Igor_U mentioned. Will keep these guys in mind if I pursue this.

The PPI is for your wallet’s protection...

kinda like insurance... it only has great value when it finds something horrible...  money well spent getting out of the horrible situation... before you own it...

The outdoors is a crummy place for airplanes...

Corrosion can occur in any airplane.  It is wise to have somebody initimately familiar with all the access points.  No short cuts when protecting your wallet...

Sometimes you get very lucky... sometimes you wish you had a really good PPI...

Plan on buying a really nice cover for your bird...

PP thoughts only...

I know that Regal aviation at KPAE is maintaining few Mooneys of various vintage, from classics to newer J and K. You want to speak with Brian...

I misunderstood you the first time, will check in with Brian at the maintenance department.
