2005 Ovation with G1000 panel. If Nav 1 or 2 are tuned to a Vortac frequency, I receive a DME read out in the small flags below the Directional Gyro. If an ILS with DME frequency is placed into either Nav radio, no DME read out is present. Am I missing something?

The G1000 does not come standard with a DME. What you're seeing is a GPS distance to the VOR (page 51, G1000 Pilot's Guide). The G1000 does not display this for an ILS; however the distance to the missed approach point (ie "RW09 map") can be displayed on the PFD by selecting the flight plan inset.

Now that is a tidbit I never considered. Further investigation.......

You can have an optional DME receiver placed /paired to the G1000. if this is installed, a new soft key is present to select Nav1/2. Also, a "new" window pops up displaying DME distance.

Another clue I missed (initially) was the distance goes to zero when over the VOR when flying at altitude. This suggests a GPS origin of the data. A true DME signal does not read zero at altitude.
