While taxing out this morning in my Ovation my right main gear found a new pot hole and managed to provide me some Thanksgiving cheer.  I have an A&P straightening the doors and then we are going to do swing tests to make sure there are no bindings so that I can get back in the air.  Anyone know what the lead time is these days on new doors?

Dang! I doubt you'll get great results straightening that much deflection. Short-term you might need a cut and patch repair, but ultimately you'll be buying another set.

My IA tried to unbend the front gear doors of an ovation with no luck.  He said he could never get the doors to meet up evenly.  You may have better luck with yours since it just has to meet flat.

Just curious. How much are they, the outer & middle door?

I left the numbers at the office but I think it was 1300 for the outer and 905 for the inner, unpainted.  Paint is another 650.

Russ,

Good luck getting it put back together.

Thanks for providing the pictures of what not to do.  That's an experiment, I don't want to repeat.

Best regards,

I did some bending, straightening and touch up today until the new doors arrive.  The metal is pretty easy to form.

Are you still considering replacements?  It doesn't seem like they need anything else, and the new ones may not fit as well without tweaking.

Yes, I already had the shipped to Tejas for paint.

Those gear doors come over size from the factory ready to be trimmed to custom fit your Mooney. You probably don't want to paint them till they have been fitted to your Mooney. See your maintenance manual for details.

Gosh, I hope that's not the case.  I ordered them through an MCS that said they are the same today as 2005.  I will double check.

They haven't changed since the long-body's went to dual puck brakes but the middle door is trimmed to fit. You are probably ok on the outer door, but the middle door has several inches of excess material. Being hand made, this is not at all uncommon since many parts are custom fitted.
