Did I really just see in the AOPA weekly video the AOPA encourage/endorse flying and playing Pokeman on my iPhone at the same time?  What happened to encouraging a culture of safety?  Might as well do some ,inverted buzzing so my friends can take a picture of me flying and playing Pokeman.

To be fair the pilot was flying and the kids were playing...But you make a valid point.  It doesn't send the right message for safety.  The potential mixed message has already been addressed internally.

A lot of excellent info in these videos.

As far as the pokemon thing both pilots were flying and not playing. Nowhere in the video does the AOPA "encourage/endorse flying and playing Pokeman on my iPhone at the same time..." To be fair.

One of the respiratory therapists caught a pokeman on top of a phone in the ICU.  Talk about culture of safety.  Jeesh.

The app is designed for walking. Past 12 mph ground speed, it disables any distance tracking. You'll still be able to catch pokemon if the server is fast enough to populate one as you go down the road at 60mph.

In an airplane, you'll have to be low enough to hit towers (which is under 4,000 here in FL. Which also means the cabin is hotter than an oven, no thanks). Also, doing 120mph, you'll likely never see anything as it takes the server 2-3 seconds to populate a Pokemon in one specific spot.

Hi George, Actually I wasn't offended in the least.  I was more so just pointing out it is a mixed message in case no one noticed.  There are lots of people having car accidents recently because they are playing pokeman and driving, including even some police officers.

Flying generally has a different message than driving.  In driving 'distracted' driving is taking phone calls, making texts or anything other than driving.  In flying, we celebrate flying and being able to do many things also at the same time - reading a chart/looking up a radio frequency/handling a check list/unfolding folding a chart (well not so much anymore that)/looking up a parameter in an old crusty POH/reperforming a W&B or perhaps fuel calculation.  We call this multi-tasking and it is celebrated because it is necessary to have the ability to do this things while flying.

When I took Driver's Ed, it was voluntary and lasted much less than 40 hours. It came with an insurance discount, though.

In the car, we generally mess around with the radio, various music inputs, GPS, food & drink, and tend to not think of these as distractions. Folding/unfolding maps was routine and occasioned little discussion.

On the other hand, away from the traffic pattern, we generally have time to do these things in our planes. Try letting go of your steering wheel and looking down for 30 seconds . . . On second thought, please don't try that in your car! Distractions are labeled differently, because the environment and capabilities are different. But neither should be used to play games.

Thread drift, but if you haven't seen the video of the Belgian driving school that requires texting and driving, you've missed an entertaining video.

Remember back when you first taxied a plane and that was the only thing you were focused on and you looked like a drunk sailor.   (I let an 18 year old taxi the plane a couple of weeks ago)  Now you taxi the plane run the checklist and set the instruments.   I kind of think we should teach how to text and drive just like we teach increased workload in flying.  Just saying no is not working at all.

Really?  How about teaching how to drink and drive too 'cause that seems to not be working well in addition to texting while driving...

How about watching a movie while driving?

Intercourse?

Make-up application?

Shaving?

Plucking Nose hairs?

Reading a book?

Writing a report?

Eating Chinese?

How about the uber course where we combine any of above simultaneously while driving?

Success equals survival and a lack of bent sheet metal?

One example involves learning how to do something safely through experience.  One is a dangerous distraction that can get you or others killed.

I like my new company car.  Apple CarPlay.  Plug phone in and texts/mapping are read to you.  You can send texts by pushing steering wheel buttons and talking.  Reads back and asks if you want to send?  STILL a distraction, but you can be hands free and head up/eyes on the road...while you are distracted by the thought process of what you are hearing and saying...

There is a reason for the nanny's on lane management, active braking and proximity/blind spot protection...

I would settle for people exercising their left finger on a turn signal and using a left lane for overtaking...not camping next to the car in the right lane...

30,000 business miles over last 30 years.  Observation: Distracted driving and use of personal handheld devices is a BIG problem.  Watch out for THEM and DON'T be that guy.

problem is you cant fix stupid and the more addicted to these stupid devises the more people are going to be a driving hazard.  Personally I fear the drunk less than the texter at least he might be trying to get it right someone with their head down texting is completely disconnected from the road.  I see these MFrs cross the center line all the time head down devise in hand

I lost a close friend and co-worker to a head-on.  Pre-texting, but hit me hard.  Left a beautiful wife and two lovely daughters.  I fear being in the wrong place at the right time with the total driving I accumulate.  Getting worse not better with inattentive driving due to hhd's.  I will be glad when all my driving is like my flying-For pleasure.

Look out for 'em people.  Minimize left turns.  I don't do them on the highway if I must stop.  Assume nothing.  Better to be alive than "dead right".

Is it sad I was speed scrolling and this caught my eye?

Not at all.  Just so you are not "speedy" at everything :)

outlawing texting made it worse since now they have to look down at the hidden phone.   Oh and have you ever noticed it is OK for the police to Text and drive with their computer right next to them.
