2eskies Posted January 24, 2015 Report Posted January 24, 2015 My 1967 M20F is in need of having the original yokes refurbished. (The pilot side has the PC Control and the clock.). I've found a couple of places online, but would like some recommendations for the forum. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

bonal Posted January 25, 2015 Report Posted January 25, 2015 Sand blast and have them powder coated. Much better than paint Quote
Bob_Belville Posted January 25, 2015 Report Posted January 25, 2015 I was told by the avionics shop that the cure temp required for setting powder coating was not allowed for the yoke material used on the vintage models. Polymer of some kind? (They powder coated the metal panel.) Quote

Bob_Belville Posted January 25, 2015 Report Posted January 25, 2015 Too bad that would look slick Yeah, I suggested we do that while they had them off for 2 months. Quote

Guest Posted January 27, 2015 Report Posted January 27, 2015 I've done metal yokes in both powder coat and polyurethane paint. Paint took many layers of gloss black but looked really sharp when completed. Clarence Quote

KSMooniac Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Leather from Aero Comfort is the best! Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk Quote
TWinter Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Hector at Aero Comfort did mine in super quick turn-around time. I have the clock in the middle and PC control. He worked around it with no problems. He also installed PTT switches. Great work done in two-tone leather.. Quote

The yoke clock & PC button are (mostly) why mine are still powder coated. 1 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Mine are pretty much original. How much speed would I gain? 1 Quote
bonal Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Ive got these plastic grips on mine they look odd but are super comfotable and ergo 14upanel.pdf Quote
mike_elliott Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Yeah, I suggested we do that while they had them off for 2 months. I didn't have an issue powder coating my 1970 F yokes when I redid the interior, Bob. The shop sandblasted off the plastic like coating and simply powder coated them, and they came out great Quote

But I don't know. Quote

Yes, I am thinking they might have been magnesium, but not sure. I didn't see them stripped, just before and after, and they really dressed her up after I put in Bruce's spatial interior 1 Quote

sreid Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Has anybody found a method of re-doing the original plastic coating? I like the look and feel of it, but have never seen the process available anywhere. I wonder if it is a dip, or a spray. Quote
TWinter Posted January 28, 2015 Report Posted January 28, 2015 Here are mine that were done by Aero Comfort. I did put the extra grip wrap for hot summer days. Not the best pics, but you get the idea. Quote
mike_elliott Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Here is what my former (Now Phils) F model yoke looks like after powder coating 1 Quote
RobertGary1 Posted January 29, 2015 Report Posted January 29, 2015 Do you find that on hot days the sweat on your hands makes it hard to hold a powder coated yoke? That's the motivation to use leather. Quote

My C has powder coated yokes. They were frequently sweaty during my initial transition training (with less than 100 hours total time); now I usually grip lightly with finger tips unless in IMC, and it hasn't been a problem in recent years. 1 Quote
